NYJ IDP Training Camp Report

Recommended Posts

First the basics:

The Jets are running 90% 3-4. The D backfield is a traditional FS-SS scheme, with some zone and man for the CB's.

Barton as ILB seems to be taking on blockers, trying to keep Vilma free to make tackles and plays. Maybe the switch to the 3-4 won't hurt Vilma quite as much as I thought it might. Those two appear to be near to every down players, with Schlegel behind Barton, and Kassel behind Vilma. The OLB spots so far are a near 50-50 rotaion. At the weak side OLB spot, Trevor Johnson (who appears to be the better rush LB) and Bryan Thomas (who liiks beter in coverage) are splitting time. At the strong side OLB spot, it's Hobson and Chatham in a rotation as well.

The CB's.... could also be a rotation between Dyson, Barrett and Miller. Mangini likes to move them around alot, from one side to the other. If any one of them has an edge in playing time, we'll really have to wait until the first preseason game to find out how Mangini will use them situationally, and that will determine playing time, as far as I can tell.

Coleman has been out since Friday with the flu, reportedly, so the 3rd round rookie Smith has taken all the first team snaps at SS. While this scheme should favor the SS FF-wise, Rhodes is playing like a potential all pro at FS. He's getting to the ball carrier before Smith does, and laying lumber when he hits. He added about 10 pounds of muscle, and it shows. He's also always around the ball, and has 5 or 6 INT's already. In goal line drills, he's been taking out the lead blocker (the FB) and that gives Vilma and Barton a clean shot at the ball carrier. I think Rhodes' tackle numbers will equal that of whoever wins the SS spot, but with his ball kawking, I think he's possibly the best IDP value on the Jets. Yeah, I know, Vilma.... but Vilma will go early.... Rhodes could be a top five DB and can be drafted much later.

Robertson has looked OK, just OK at NT. Rumor is that second year player Pouha (having shed 30 punds and off to a GREAT start in TC) has an ACL.... out for the year. This could really hurt the D overall.... the Jets don't have another viable NT if he's gone for the year. Ellis and Kimo von O are firmly entrenched at the DE spots. This camp's 11 on 11's are true game simulations.... full contact although they are in shells in one of the sessions during two a days.

That's what I've got.... be happy to answer any Q's....

I'm starting to wonder if posting in this forum isn't a total waste of time.

Faithful reader here!

I am all about the Eric Smith updates ...

I am unfortunately also counting on Barton in at least one league ...

:D

Not much actvity here, but I too am a faithful reader. That other site you post in that will go un-mentioned has more action.

Thanks though. Any word on L Coles or the offense? Pennington?

Sorry..... I was quit ornery yesterday.... AC in my den crapped out!

Eric Smith needs to get better at reading and reacting.... it looks to me like he is playing too cautiosly, afraid to make a mistake. Coleman still isn't practicing, and I'm starting to worry about him. 6 days out with a flu? Haven't been to camp since Tuesday, it's just too hot in those bleachers. Mangini gave the team a surprise day off today.

Brad Smith and Rhodes are the two players that have jumped out at me so far. B Smith could be a starter as early as next year. He needs some work, but he has the raw skills to be a special player.

SS Erick Coleman has undergone an apendectomy. He's expected back in 2 weeks. Smith has looked pretty good in his absence, and Rhodes is now making the defensive play calls. Drew Coleman (CB) had a negative MRI on his knee, Barrett didn't practice due to an unamed injury.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update....

Strait was a SURPRISE starter at SS, but it later became obvious that the Jets were showcasing him for the Suggs deal. Strait is not much of a CB.... so they wanted to hide that fact, and started him a S. Smith Continues to get all the 1st team D snaps in camp, and Coleman's job is in jepordy. Strait is a likely cut at this point.

Bryan Thomas is getting most of the snaps at OLB, and he is the 3-4 rush LB as well, over Trevor Johnson. The other OLB battle is less settled, between Hobson and Chatham. Looks like Dyson and Miller have gotten the upper hand over Barrett at the CB spots.

Jets had Grady Jackson in, as D Robertson is not doing well at NT in the 3-4. DRob and Kimo (DE) have been switching spots... a clear sign Robertson isn't getting it done at NT.

Vilma has been getting buried.... and his numbers as I predicted, will go WAY down, unless the problem at NT is resolved.

Hey Rovers.... How has Anthony Schlegel looked so far in camp? I haven't been able to catch any of the Jet's preseason games so far and haven't really heard anything on him. I understand he is buried in the depth chart right now, but thought maybe he could possibly be getting some PT as the season progresses. Have him in a couple of dynasty leagues and was hoping he'd get a shot at getting some reps in the middle in that 3-4.

He and Kassel are the #2 ILB's at this point. If Vilma continues to get buried at ILB.... and I was laughed at when i suggested this sveral months ago.... I could see Vilma going to the outside, replacing Hobson/Chatham. Schlegel is a tough kid, hits hard. He won't get a whole lot of playing time, unless they try moving Vilma outside. Kassel has also played well, and I couldn't say which of them would get the ILB job if indeed, Vilma's role is changed.

Let me be sure to note that this Vilma to the outside is PURE conjecture on my part. The reason I mention this however is that Vilma has been a non-factor so far, and mangini is not afraid to make changes if it improves the team. It's my personal opinion that Vilma would be more effective fron a team D standpoint at OLB. I will get out to camp one more time this week.... I want to see Barlow run some.

Don't think this. posts like these are what this site is about. as a matter of fact Posting like this is more important than the site itself to me. that is no knock on the Huddle because I love the huddle and have for years and years now. I was coming to the Huddle a long ,long time before I started coming to their message boards.

But posts's like the one you wrote is as good or better than any insight you will find on any site. you have fantasy football as well as the game itself in mind when writing post's like these. I for 1 greatly appreciate the effort you took to write this and take them very seriously. keep up the great work.

Now for the real heart wrenching chit...who is the 2nd NT now after the injury?

Coleman should be good to go, but his competition is E Smith, not Strait. Smith is a much more prototypical SS than Coleman is... tough guy, hits hard, and is good in the box. Strait is frankly, IMO, none of the above.... he's barely 190 lbs and lacks the speed to be an effective cover guy. These days, an apendectomy isn't the big deal it used to be, and Coleman is practicing on a limited basis already. By week 1, he'll be 100%, but I put the warning flag out on Coleman's starting status a long time ago. Smith has gotten a lot of time during his absence, which didn't help him any. He'll certainly be the #3 safety, but a starter... I'm not so sure.

I'm going to TC tomorrow... the second to last one open to the public. I'll see who is running with the first team D then at the safety spots, although Rhodes is a lock, barring an injury setback. Rhodes has also been making the D reads and play calls, something Coleman did last year, further weakening Coleman's hold on the job.

Thanks, Doc H.... yeah, the NT spot... a problem. I had high hopes for Pouha, who started camp looking very good. Kimmo vonO has been getting snaps at NT lately, in a sort of rotation with Robertson. They had fat 'ol Grady Jackson in, but word is they think he's just too freakin fat at 370 to play well. They could REALLY use him, if he can move at least a little bit. They have a big rook, kid named Tui.... might be a long term answer, but very raw now. 6'4", 350, out of Washington. NT is the biggest weakness on the Jets D, but besides that, the D looks OK.

I'l report what I see tomorrow.

I know you are probably thinking " why the heck does he care about the backup NT "

32 team fantasy leagues.

Trevor Johnson has looked good, but Bryan Thomas has looked very good. They both play the same OLB spot. So, it looks like Johnson could see less laying time if Thomas continues to play this well. I do think they would put Johnson in at the other OLB in some situations. Well. time to head out to my last TC practice!

EDIT: Just before I left, I heard Barlow was given the day off to catch up on some rest... he hardly slept for two days. Tomorrow is the last day camp is open to the public, so I'll go then.

Short report:

Coleman and E Smith split snaps with the 1's today. Unsettled. Bryan Thomas is the clear cut starter over Johnson as the OLB/pass rush specialist. Miller has been demoted to the second team D in favor of Barrett, and Dyson could be a very nice sleeper at CB... had 2 INT's today, including a 90 yard TD, and Leon Washington has the KO return job. Schlegel and Kassel remian the backups for Vilma and Barton.
