Palmer passes first test

From bengals.com:

Quarterback Carson Palmer cut through the rust of rehab Friday night to complete four of his last five passes, including a six-yard touchdown flip to wide receiver Tab Perry for a touchdown as he rolled to his right and threw across his reconstructed left knee to highlight the offense’s 41-25 victory over the defense in the annual intrasquad scrimmage here at Georgetown College.

After missing his first four passes, Palmer said he’s still searching for rhythm and timing and plans to take off Saturday afternoon’s Mock Game. He said he feels better after each workout, but he says he doubts he’ll play before the Aug. 28 game against Green Bay at Paul Brown Stadium in third preseason game.

“I’m still not completely healthy. I’m still not back as far as timing and rythym are concerned,” Palmer said. “The more reps I get the better I feel.

“I need to be more athletic in the pocket and get back to the technique I’ve always had and always relied on. It will take time, but I’ll get there.”

I know he doesn't truly classify as a Sleeper but he is in my league as most of the guys don't like to touch players coming off injuries. I should be able to grab him in like the 6-7th round. NICE!!!! :D

Bump to update that Palmer took 80 percent of the snaps in practice Monday ...

:D

Carson Palmer asked for more work in practice, and after consulting with doctors and therapists handling his rehabilitation, the Bengals gave it to him.

The fourth-year quarterback handled 80 percent of the practice snaps Monday morning, doubling his workload from the previous week and suggesting that Palmer is moving closer toward his goal of starting the regular season opener Sept. 10 at Kansas City.

"I really don't think about that much; that's my long-term goal," Palmer said of the opener. "But right now, I'm just thinking about this practice - whatever new plays we're installing, what new defense we're going to see. I'm going to start worrying about (the Chiefs) later on."

Palmer will not play Sunday night in the preseason opener at home against Washington, coach Marvin Lewis said Monday.

Lewis is expected to announce the team's backup quarterback - Anthony Wright or Doug Johnson - this week, and the No. 2 passer will start against the Redskins.

"Not for you," Lewis told reporters Monday when asked if he had decided on the No. 2 quarterback.

Based on practice repetitions - whatever Palmer did not take Monday were given to Wright - the former Ravens quarterback has won the backup job and will start Sunday.

Bengals coaches insist they are not rushing Palmer.

But it's difficult to get beyond the fact the opener is eight months to the date from Palmer's left knee was surgically reconstructed.

If the Bengals have promoted Wright to No. 2, he'll need all the work he can get in case Palmer can't go early.

Few Bengals fans will forget former coach Dick LeBeau's ill-fated quarterback competition in training camp 2002; Gus Frerotte beat out Jon Kitna after a month but didn't know the offense because he didn't get nearly enough snaps.

Wright never has played with an offense as talented as the Bengals'. He could put up big numbers.

Palmer did not practice Monday night. Instead he continued his training-camp ritual of being on the field just once a day.

"I'm going to stay on the same schedule I've been on, just so I can get my conditioning and workout in during that second practice," he said.

Palmer made the request for more work before training camp opened.

"He feels like the more snaps he gets the better he feels," Lewis said of Palmer. "We told him to wait until the second week and see how he felt and got through the first week. Now we can begin to ratchet up the snaps. He can get them when he's on the field. When he's not out there, the guys (Wright and Johnson) can go back and kind of split it."

Palmer's play improved as the morning practice went on. He and the first offense were sloppy in the first 11-on-11 team session, drawing the ire of offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski.

Palmer was sharp with his throws in a seven-on-seven drill and even sprinted out of the pocket. He ran down the right sideline for about 20 yards before stepping out of bounds.

"It's time for me to start working on getting outside the pocket and making some plays," Palmer said of the scramble, "instead of so much work in the pocket. It's good for me to get outside and run around a little bit."

On the next play - the team was in full pads - Palmer threaded a fastball between three defenders to Chad Johnson. Then he threw another laser to tight end Reggie Kelly over the middle and finished the series with a touch pass to tailback Kenny Watson in the flat.

In the final team session, Palmer completed a deep crossing route to Johnson that had the timing of midseason form.

"I feel good," Palmer said. "I need as many reps as I can get. I feel better every day. I may not be more productive day by day, but I feel better, more confident and more comfortable every day."

As soon as Palmer plays a preseason game, DMD will bump him into the 1st tier I'm sure. I'm convinced he'll be fine for the opener.

If you draft late August or September, he'll be going in the 5th and up. With all the positive news, I wouldn't bet on the 6th even now.

FWIW- I just heard a Bengal beat writer on our local sports radio. He though Palmer would not play until week 5......... which is after the bye week I believe. Bengal homers may have more detail and info- but he was pretty firm on Palmer not being ready for the opener, and likely not til week 5.
