Grits and Shins
... according to Parcells in today's news conference ... "if he stays healthy". Although he said he wasn't interested in "going with the hot hand" AND he said that he wants to get Thompson behind the 1st string.

The Holy Roller
In other news ... Both TO and Terry Glenn spent practice on the stationary bicycle. That's fine by me. Got TO in a keeper league and he can wait till the season starts to play for all I care.

So, am I to infer that MB may be starting the first preaseason game? Or, am I to infer that JJ is on a shorter leash than previously thought, but that JJ is still the starting RB? Or, is MB going to start lining up at WR? Or, does "major major role" mean he'll be the blocking back for JJ?

Personally I believe that when Bill says "Major Major role" all he means by that is that Barber will be involved in a high number of plays. That doesn't necessarily equate to a high number of carries (or any). This is just my take on it ... based on what I have heard and observed from Parcells here in Dallas. I think in the pre-season game we are likely to see JJ start with lots of MB & TT reps ... although JJ may not get any until later in the pre-season. This is must my take on it. Bill Swerski
Since it's no surprise that Barber is one of Parcells' favorites, this shouldn't be a surprise either. He'll be used a lot on 3rd down, just like he has been in the past.

Bill had no qualms using both backs last year, and I'd expect more of the same with JJ's history of injuries. He knows there is a very good chance that he'll have no other option than to start Barber, so better damn well make sure he's battle tested and ready. My Giants homerism aside, I really see this offense struggling mightily this year.
tonorator
are you sure parcells wasn't just confused and thinking that he was still coaching the giants?
Atlas
Or Parcells is just messin' with JJ's head, like he used to do when he was here in Jersey?
msaint
Or Parcells is just messin' with JJ's head, like he used to do when he was here in Jersey? I thought the same thing when i heard Shanny made Mike Bell the #1 right now...just trying to motivate Tatum/Dayne? Parcells either has a man-crush on Barber or dislikes Julius' fragility. piratesownninjas
Parcells has said a few times that Barber will get 120 touches this year. Take it for what its worth.
Puddy
So who's a better keeper. JJ at $8 MB at $
i_am_the_swammi
Parcells has said a few times that Barber will get 120 touches this year. Take it for what its worth. That sounds about right.....120/16 = 7-8 touches per game. 2-3 receptions, 5-6 rushes. Probably not that far off what he did towards the 2nd half of last year when Jones was starting. Barber will take over for a series here here and there, and will reduce JJs carries to 15-18 per game....unless, of course, Jones is having another Panthers-type performance...then he just lets him run. Two things Parcells dislikes is fragility and rookie holdouts
piratesownninjas
So who's a better keeper. JJ at $8 MB at $4 Jones. He'll still get the lions share of the carries.
Cowboyz1
MB is a rich man's Alstott. Both will be in the backfield and both could have 6-8 TD's a piece. Barber catches the ball better and hits it up in there, but JJ is a better pure speed runner who will also stick it up in there with a chance to take it the distance. You can't have to many good RB but fantasy wise, the fact that you can't feel comforable with either suggests they are both solid backs. tonorator
from fanball today ... Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells discussed the roles of running backs Julius Jones, Marion Barber, and Tyson Thompson on Wednesday. "With (Jones and Barber), I'm more inclined to change the runners," Parcells explained during his press conference. "And I want Tyson to be in the mix as well. Marion could be the third-down guy and something else. Julius could be the lead runner. I don't think Tyson is ready for third down right now." that should clear it up for you ... Grits and Shins
I think you are going to Jones get all the starts but Barber will get 1 to 2 series per game. Thompson will return kicks and get an occassional carry.
