The Weekly Blitz is very time consuming and I gave strong consideration to retiring the contest this year.

After much thought I decided that the Weekly Blitz will not be retired this year, but I am looking for ways to make it easier to manage and less time consuming.

The first thing I did was spend quite a bit of time over hauling the spreadsheet I use to make data entry easier and calculations automatic. I'm fairly pleased with where my spreadsheet is now (and it is night and day different from last year's version). This should save me quite a bit of time. I will require participants to format their entries in a specific manner; i.e. the standard 3 character abbreviation must be used, 1 per line with nothing else on the the line.

ATL

ARI

JAX

KCC

NOS

This will allow me to cut and paste the entry into my spreadsheet (instead of having to type them all in). The spreadsheet picks up the lines for each team based on the 3 character abbreviation entered, so if you enter a non-standard abbreviation (ARZ, JAC, NO, KC, SD, SF, Dallas, Dal, Saints, Lions, Packers) these entries will cause that particular entry to be in error (not counted).

I have also considered requesting a specific forum where the Weekly Blitz information can be posted. But really the only reason I would do this is if I made the contest invitation only and the forum would be private. Invitation only would prevent all the n00bs throughout the weeks from entering here and there. Pretty much anybody that has participated in the past (for more than a couple of weeks) and any of the regulars would be allowed to participate (if you are on my ignore list don't ask).

I also considered only allowing those that have entered week 1 to participate in the remaining weeks.

What are your thoughts?

Disregard the remainder of this note ... I just want to save the format of the weekly blitz post

---- Weekly Post Format ----

RULES

  • Pick any 5 games against the spread as listed in this post.
  • The spreads listed in this post are pulled from USA Today
  • The spreads posted here will be used even if they differ from USA Today
  • The spread is the line for the HOME team
  • Pushes count as losses
  • If you pick a team that is OFF the board it will count as a loss
  • If you pick MORE than five teams losses will be counted first, then wins until a count of 5 is reached
  • Entries will be accepted after the kickoff of the 1st game but only for games not in progress or finished
  • There are no prizes, just bragging rights
  • I will tally the points each week and track YTD totals
  • I will post weekly results and YTD standings

EDITING ENTRIES

  • Edited entries will not be accepted. Once I have entered your picks I don't review the thread to pick up edited entries.
  • To change your picks quote your original to show your original picks and then specify your new picks.

FORMAT

Enteries MUST be in the correct format. Enter 1 team per line using the standard 3 character abbreviation listed below

  • ARI
  • ATL
  • BAL
  • BUF
  • CAR
  • CHI
  • CIN
  • CLE
  • DAL
  • DEN
  • DET
  • GBP
  • HOU
  • IND
  • JAX
  • KCC
  • MIA
  • MIN
  • NEP
  • NOS
  • NYG
  • NYJ
  • OAK
  • PHI
  • PIT
  • SDC
  • SFO
  • SEA
  • STL
  • TBB
  • TEN
  • WAS

So a VALID ENTRY would look something like:

ARI

DAL

CAR

ATL

STL

And the following would be INVALID TYPE ENTRIES:

ARZ

Dallas

Panthers

ATL +1

- STL

This will allow me to cut and paste the entry into my spreadsheet (instead of having to type them all in). The spreadsheet picks up the lines for each team based on the 3 character abbreviation entered, so if you enter a non-standard abbreviation (ARZ, JAC, NO, KC, SD, SF, Dallas, Dal, Saints, Lions, Packers) these entries will cause that particular entry to be in error (not counted).

THIS WEEK'S LINE; WEEK 1

Personally I'd prefer not to have yet another forum to remember to visit each day.

I think to make things easier on you, Blitz, that all contestants have to be full participants. Every week. No in one week out the other BS.

A forum isn't a bad idea - but not just for your game. Maybe all the Huddle contests could reside there (although I think TheOhioState had a thread pinned with links to all the contest).

I was thinking the same thing, except that maybe the Huddle MVP Challenge Forum could become the Huddle Games Forum. We are all in there anyways...

It seems to be pretty clear how the wind is blowing on questions 1 and 3

I had pretty much decided that the answer to number 3 was going to be "Yes" .... and it looks like the concensus agrees.

Number 1 won't happen unless number 2 happens ... private forum and all ....

1 and 3 sound like fine ideas.

Don't you think the invite deal seems a bit elitist. Why not expand on the week one idea. Why not say if you miss a week, your done.

I have been guilty in the past of missing a week here or there or there or there. Due mostly to being away on business or pleasure. If you made it mandatory that if you wanted to continue, you had to be sure and submit each and every week, that would make it more of a priority. (even if I had to phone it in to my wife to enter)

I'm arguing the invite deal, because, based on my above admission of guilt, I probably would not receive one.

We have forum!

Is the password "unnecessary"? :D

In any case, I would have voted no on 1 and 2 and absolutely yes on 3.

Oh well. I'd love to participate again and would appreciate the invite/password.

Thanks for all your hard work, Gritsy. :D

Is there room for me? I haven't done it in the past because I didn't start in week 1. Well, I'm more active now and voted for forum, no invite, and full participation. I'm assuming the hardest part is adding names every other week or so. If you have room, great, if not that's OK, too.

I believe we are looking at:

An invitation only contest in a private forum with no new participants after week 1.

In addition, if someone misses a week, they're out the rest of the way. I've been in here a long time and never did the Blitz, but I am looking forward to being more active this season...Weekly Blitz included.
