CardinalEmpire.com
An office league that one of my coworkers is trying to start is apparently having a hard time getting enough players to join. Right now there are 6 people willing to play, but additional owners are unlikely. Are six teams enough for a fantasy league without complete waiver chaos? What is the strategy for those of you who have played in leagues this small? Standard scoring, offensive players only, team defenses. Furd
I think 10 is the minimum. 8 is ridiculous. 6? Forget about it.

The Wolf
I concur...gotta be at least 10 teams. 10 will be loaded as it is. 12 is better but it sounds as if you cannot make 12. Can you open up the league to a couple of people not in the office? Edited August 8, 2006 by The Wolf

I really don't think a 6 person team would even be worth doing...10 is a bare minimum...
Big Country
You can do 6 teams, but, to accomodate thefact that every team will be loaded, you need to make appropriate adjustments to the starting lieups. At minimum, I would suggest 2 QBs, 4 RBs, 6 WRs, 2 TEs, 2 K and 2 D plus maybe two flex spots... essentially double the standard lineup found in a 12 team league... irish
:goodposting: For starting up 10 is perfect. 12 is solid and 14 would be challenging.

rattsass
A six team league would be fine for kids learning how to play. 8 team leagues aren't much better. Everybody has studs at every position. Not much competition for a serious player. And lets get real.....not much bragging rights in winning an 8 teamer. 10 team leagues can be fairly competitive. But the 12 team league is where it is at in my opinion.
PantherDave
I do a Super Six with 5 others from my local, and the teams are suppose to be loaded, it's total points for 17 weeks, unlimited WW that is first come first serve Tuesday-Thursday during the season-Winner take all. The entry fee is $250, so it makes it a blast, and I lost last year to a block punt that Minn had in week 17.
McBoog
I have been running a League for the last 12 years. The first few were great and then as teams come and go, things would fluctuate. Our first year had 12 teams, but only 6 showed up to the draft. I did not play that year, choosing to stay in the other league I had been playing in while learning how to be a Commish (I highly reccommend that you NOT play your first year as a Commish). The problem with a league when it changes dramatically from its roots is that its personality changes as well. In our league, the money became more important than the bragging rights. I almost folded my league this year, but was talked into one more year. I agreed but on my terms, the players agreed. Why this preamble, I'll get there, I promise! One of the years, we lost 5 of twelve teams to transfers to new duty locations about two weeks before the draft. This was before the Web based services were easy to use like MFL. I was able to find one guy and went with 8 teams. Looking back, though the set-up could have been improved, it was one of the more fun and better years we had. Unfortunately there was a super-superstar team (I went 16-0 ) and that lessens the accomplishment Playing with either 6 or 8 teams can suck. Usually you end up with a bunch of superstar teams and little waiver movement. Starting line-ups are no-brainers under pretty standard formats, and usually 2 or three teams start to run away with the seasons. Finally tired of all the BS I have put up with for years with unknown new GMs in and out, I wanted, actually did, pull the plug! As I said, the "old guard" talked me into keeping it going. I am going with a very close group of six other guys and a chick (+ myself) to make an 8 team league. Some of the strategies I have incorporated this year to take the "Superstar" factor out are as follows. Feel free to check out THIS LINK TO OUR HOMEPAGE for some ideas on scoring and set-up. I will have our written by-laws posted there tomorrow as well. DO NOT start a league without writing out the rules. Feel free to use ours as a starting point! 13 starters every week 2 qb,3rb,4wr,te,k,2TD. Roster will only be 18, w/ two IR. Waivers are FCFS w/ no more than 2 per week. Pretty standard performance Decimal scoring w/ 1 ppc. 4 play-off teams, top two from each division, w/ division winners given a 5-point home field advantage in the first round against WC from other division (2, 4 team divisions w/ 14 game reg season and champ in week 16), champ game straight up. We have also gone BRAGGING RIGHTS ONLY! We play for our travelling trophy, i.e. for fun. We used to be $200 entry, but the money can make things nasty (as some of you are aware of a problem I had last season over a misunderstanding for toilet bowl winnings... of all things ) and it is one more thing to manage. Now it is $20 just to pay for the league cost. Anything left over (which is not much after paying the web server and engraving and mailing the trophy) buys me and wifey lunch for the effort of putting it all together and her putting up w/my football addiction for another season. If you are just a bunch of guys at work, you can make it fun and competative by being creative. If you are friends and co-workers, you can have a lot more fun staying small than by trying to "force" a bigger league than you are ready for. Stay small, keep the pot low and figure out how to make it challenging. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or post them here for everyone's feedback. Some of the purists here will say it sucks playing 6 or 8. From a traditional viewpoint, I understand and agree. I think keeping the group to guys you know can far out weigh the desire for and the consequences that come with a bigger league w/ a bunch of strangers. Another bonus is that fewer owners make it easier to get together for a draft, meetings or in-season league parties. All of these are much more fun when you do it "live and in person". You can make almost anything work in FF as long as the focus stays on having fun. I think I have that focus back now after years of going through the motions and doing a lot of Boog Luck!
