Jets QBs

As I described in this thread, I'm going to post more of these "Situation Room" threads.

There are several fantasy-relevant training-camp "situations" that require constant updates. The point of these threads is to consolidate information into one, easy-to-find thread.

I'll start each thread with my most recent information. Then everybody else can chime in with commentary AND can add more updated information, as it happens. Simple enough? Good. :D

First up: the New York Jets QB competition.

Here's what I have right now...

From Rich Cimini, NY Daily News:

It's still too early to consider him for Comeback Player of the Year, but QB Chad Pennington is off to a nice start in training camp. Pennington, trying to rebound from his second shoulder surgery, is displaying his trademark accuracy on short and intermediate routes. He doesn't have eye-catching arm strength, but he didn't have that before his shoulder problems. More than anything, Pennington is displaying a better command of the offense than Patrick Ramsey. Barring an upset, Pennington will win the quarterback job.

Also, this tidbit (same source) is relevant:

Rookie LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson is showing why the team made him the fourth overall pick. His pass-blocking has been exceptional, if not perfect. Occasionally, a savvy pass rusher can get him leaning in the wrong direction, but Ferguson has such long arms and quick feet that he can adjust quickly. He has been pancaking defensive linemen on a regular basis in practice. At times, he needs a kick in the rear by the coaches, but he likely will grow out of that. He has been working with the starters since Day 1.

This is a "Diary" feature directly from Pennington, via Cimini, posted by TSN:

"The good thing is, when you have time on your hands, you can explore different things to get better. When you've rehabbed as long as I have, it can get monotonous, so you're always looking for a different exercise, a different way to get better.

"I think time and repetition creates confidence, I really do. I've been fortunate enough this offseason to have more time. Training camp has been a great opportunity for me to have repetitions, not only once a day. Being part of every practice is important to me.

"I do have confidence and my confidence is growing. I'm proud of the people who are around me for helping me get to where I am, and they deserve a lot of the credit for helping me back to being able to compete, That was my whole goal, to come into training camp and compete and give it everything that I've got.

"I think I'm getting better with the mental part of the offense. I've really enjoyed learning under coach (Brian) Schottenheimer and trying to learn this offense, so I can keep getting better mentally and physically. I want to keep making progress and not take any steps back."

What do YOU guys have?

:D

I've always thought Chad Pennington had 'it', and could be a great NFL quarterback.

Unfortunately, when he was waiting in line for his 'it', that conflicted with his receiving a shoulder. He will always be one big hit away form being out, and that big hit is considerably smaller than needed to drop most other NFL QBs. He's nice to have as a third QB in a fantasy situation. If you have him as your 1 or 2, you could be in trouble.

As far as a camp battle, there's no battle, really. It's Pennington's job unless he can't throw the ball.

First, Penningotn IS the starter, write that down in ink. While last year in TC his deep throws lacked anything near what an NFL QB should be able to do, his short stuff was good enough. This year, his long throws have looked good, and it's only in the past 4 days or so that his short and intermediate sfuff has looked good. In fact, better than good... very much like his 2002 season form.

The question remains... can he take a hit? That will take 16 games or less to know. I would not want to count on him as my FF QB though, not as a #2, and certainly not as a #1.
