(KFFL) Eric M. Weiss, of The Washington Post, reports a group of Native Americans filed a new legal challenge Friday, Aug. 11, to trademarks for the name and logo of the Washington Redskins. A petition filed at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by six Native Americans represents a second chance to have the team's name changed. The team won an earlier fight when a U.S. District Court judge ruled the plaintiffs waited too long under trademark law to object. The complaint this time has been filed with a new set of plaintiffs. The petition claims the team name breaks a 1946 federal law which prohibits the government from registering a trademark that disparages any race, religion, or other group. The complaint says, " The term 'redskin' was and is a pejorative, derogatory, denigrating, offensive, scandalous, contemptuous, disreputable, disparaging and racist designation for a Native American person."

What the heck would happen in WAS if they win this time?!? This is one of 'America's' teams...

I've never understood why Washington can't simply go to "Braves" - you can keep the Native American imagery and logos, and the franchise was originally the Boston Braves; plus it would probably be nice for their fans not to have to root for a team whose name is a racial epithet. :D
