Weiss, of The Washington Post, reports a group of Native Americans filed a new legal challenge Friday, Aug. 11, to trademarks for the name and logo of the Washington Redskins. A petition filed at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by six Native Americans represents a second chance to have the team's name changed. The team won an earlier fight when a U.S. District Court judge ruled the plaintiffs waited too long under trademark law to object. The complaint this time has been filed with a new set of plaintiffs. The petition claims the team name breaks a 1946 federal law which prohibits the government from registering a trademark that disparages any race, religion, or other group. The complaint says, " The term 'redskin' was and is a pejorative, derogatory, denigrating, offensive, scandalous, contemptuous, disreputable, disparaging and racist designation for a Native American person." I've never understood why Washington can't simply go to "Braves" - you can keep the Native American imagery and logos, and the franchise was originally the Boston Braves; plus it would probably be nice for their fans not to have to root for a team whose name is a racial epithet.
