Portis a wuss, or I'm an idiot?!?

''After that eight-yard run, I was like, `Get me out of that game,''' Portis said. ''That's what I was thinking. It's football. It can happen to anyone. It happened to me.''

Standard treatment involves rest and strengthening exercises. Portis had the left arm in a blue sling after the game, when he lobbied for regulars to play less in the pre-season.

''For whoever's watching: Let's get rid of some of these games,'' Portis said. ''Four games is ridiculous. Then you play a 16-game season and the playoffs behind that.''

Gibbs planned to keep Portis and his other starters in the game for only a short time.

''We wanted to have one good drive,'' Gibbs said. ''We didn't want him to carry the ball more than one or two times.''

Without Portis, the running game will depend upon backup Ladell Betts, who ran for 338 yards last season and missed four games because of a knee injury.

''Who knows what it is?'' Portis said of his injury. ''Even if it's not serious, to be nicked up for the first week of the season ...''

I know I may get chewed up for looking at it like this, but Portis seems like a real puss for making comments like this. I'm in agreement with him that the preseason should be shortened to avoid these kinds of injuries, but come on! The stage has been set for him to leave the game early already going into week 1, and we haven't even started week 2 of the preseason!

too easy here....especially you being a Raider fan...

it's like a slam dunk only requiring a 5 ft vertical...

even skins can make this one...

That could just be frustration setting in. He knows that this could have been a really promising season and it might jave just been ruined. If it happened in the last preseason game, I'd agree. I think he knows that this is no one's fault and that he really was not in the game for too long. IMHO, I bet you hear a different tune coming from him shortly.

For Portis to say he shouldn't have been in the game is ridiculous, considering he ran 50yds. to make an unneccesarily hard tackle. Every time you point a finger there's 3 pointing back.

exactly. why does he even make that tackle? If Cinci. scores...who cares????!!!

but we're the same people who would normally criticize him (or any player) for not hustling and trying to make the TD-saving tackle. can't have it both ways, folks.

Whether or not he's and idiot or puss is not the question..........the question is, is he now worth the #4 pick........ :D:D:D

maybe he'll slip to me now at #8? :D

Keep dreaming... Gone by 6th at the latest because of this... ASSuming you're not drafting with half-wits...

my local has half-wits....

it could very well go like this

1. LJ

2. SA

3. LT2

4. SSmith

5. Tiki

6. Manning

7. Portis

also...slide TO in there somewhere if he plays one pre-season game and looks good...

Portis could easily fall to 8 in any local draft... :D

1.8 just went by in the Good vs. Evil BoTH league and he still hasn't been picked up.

I think you'll be surprised where he's going to drop until there's a better evaluation on his injury.

I don't think he's a wuss.

That said, at least where I was sitting, he made a good hit on Keiwan Ratliff, who was not only more or less standing still when he was hit, but weighs all of 185 pounds soaking wet. (He's officially listed at 188)

Is that not reason to be concerned that his shoulder could be an issue all year? It's not like he was taking a flying tackle at some 250-pound LB who was galloping down the field.

He's just pi$$ed, that all these preseason games cause nicks heading into Week 1. He'll play in Week 1. Also, he's one of the toughest backs in the league. He blocks with more of a vengence that most RBs run with.

As stated above, the real question is: is he still worthy of the #4 pick? I think this shoulder thing may linger. Simply because Portis will not sit during the regular season to rest it or to get it to heal properly. I'm downgrading him a notch. I think Tiki (ugh..schedule and all) moves up to #4. Still considering SJax or Ronnie Brown or Caddy...God I hope I don't get that pick.

I'm a no harm no fould guy.

It was stupid for him to be making that play. Of course, I often wonder what players like Portis gain from plaing in these games they couldn't gain in practice in light pads anyways? If it is stupid for Portis to be making that tackle (which I think it was) it is probably stupid for him to be in there at all.

If the MRI is negative, and there's nothing lingering, he made a poor decision and got lucky. Maybe it's even for the better. He started all 16 games last year. Next year will be his 5th season. Last year he had 352 carries, the most of his career. He doen't need the contact does he? He's had 1,258 carries in the NFL. If he hasn't figured out how to take a hit by now, I doubt hit number 1,259 will result in some epiphany.

When people get into the Hall of Fame like they did last weekend, you hear stories about how the inductee never took a play off; how they played 100% on every down; how they practiced as hard as they played. The thing I never really liked about Portis was that I perceived him as a guy without any guts for the game. He appeared to me to be a very talented candyass that lacked heart.

For him to put in that much effort, in the first quarter of a preseason game, to put on that kind of hit to ensure the interception would not be returned for a TD showed me something. Sure it was stupid. It also showed me I was wrong about one of the bigger reasons I had some players ranked ahead of him. So, while I still have questions about the OL thanks to Hugh, if the MRI is negative, I move him up in my rankings. I didn't think he had that kind of effort in him.

Even when he doesn't have the ball, he's a monster. Too bad there are no fantasy points for that.

I agree with everyone's observations on how tough he is even when he doesn't have the ball. And maybe I was wrong for starting this thread the way I did... It just seems to me, that whenever I see this guy play, he's always on the sidelines receiving treatment for something, or having to leave games early. But that could be my wacky tobacky memory kickin in too!
