The Charlotte Observer reports Carolina Panthers rookie RB DeAngelo Williams has yet to have a "wow" play and he hasn't regularly had head-turning runs in training camp. He gained 7 yards on four carries during the first half running of Saturday's preseason game Aug. 21, behind the starting offensive line.

What's the deal here P.D.?Would Williams be the guy should Foster go down?Does he seem to have a grasp of what's going on?(can he block,is he learning the playbook, does he appear to be lost?)Is there a realistic chance that if Foster gets hurt early in the season that Goings would be the guy?Just trying to figure out a few late, late round flyers with draft time coming around.Thanks.

He had "one" wow vs the Bills, a 21 yd scamper(may have been off a screen pass) , but as of now I'd bank on Goings as the #2. The depth chart is no where near being finalized, but I'd say right now that DW is the #3 and that Shelton stands a strong chance of being cut.

That's the kind of info you can only get on these boards.Goings is listed as the #2 fullback on the depth chart on the Panthers site. :D Thanks P.D.

Watch the game Thursday night vs the Phins-it's Natl., as the starters and 2nd teamers are going to get the majority of work-3 quaters, to get a strong read as to the depth chart. The Final vs Pitt will be nothing to go on at all, as the starters will see most likely no action and the main back-ups very little as well. If you see Foster and DW plugging along Thursday night-well, that's most likely your 1 and 2(well Foster is the 1, but ya catch my drift).

Let's say that Foster goes down with a season ending injury. Who will take over the #1 job? All things equal, I have to believe they would give it to their 1st round draft pick. Has Goings been that much more impressive than DeAngelo?

Similar situation here in Nashville. Brown is the #1 rb until he gets hurt. Then it will the job will go to Henry or White. And with a high #2 invested in White, all things equal, then this job will belong to him.

I just don't know with Fox-as last year Foster was suppose to start, then Davis got cleared to play and he started. Fox is just as bad as Shanny and Bill B. To answer your question-Goings looked the best of the coral last night vs Jax.

+1

I'm banking on both of these situations.

Nick Goings reminds me of the guy in the office that can run circles around his co-workers but always gets passed over for a promotion because he doesn't have a million dollar smile and the right suit.

I have to disagree with PD on this one. Goings is a nice backup RB, but Williams WILL be the man if something happens to Foster. The guy had only played in two pre-season games and is still learning blocking assignments and adjusting to the speed of the defenders, much too early to predict Goings to be the #2 guy after Foster. I was at the game and Williams got more touches with the first team OL and he looked quite good. Very good speed and was able to make quite a few nice runs for 5 - 10 yds when he was in at RB. I do agree with PD about Shelton looking like his days as a Panther are numbered as Goings can fill that role and Shelton hasn't done much to impress the coaches.

His Kickoff return was just a glimpse of what I think he brings to the team and he hit the wedge full speed and barely was touched has he burst through the coverage team and past the kicker. Williams will get plenty of work on ST and 3rd down situations and will be the #1 guy should Foster get hurt.

I completely agree. Goings was great a few years ago, but lost some pep last year, and basically isn't fit to be the #1 i believe. Williams, while obviously unproven, will most likely pick up for Foster WHEN he goes down. Which, I'm sure will happen by lunch tomorrow.

Foster won't go down this year because this is first year in which I don't have him AND to make matters worse, I have Williams.

My thoughts on Goings starting the season as the #2 RB were based on Fox perhaps holding Williams back until he grasp of the offenses was up to par, and he would have taken over the #2 RB position during the season. However, as I said, last nights game would be a clear barometer to the RB situation, and Williams looked great and seemed to be much improved since the Buffalo game and vs a tougher DT in Miami-I was impressed. The Panthers have a very nice 1-2 punch in Foster and Williams.

I've watched the Panthers since 1st day of camp....GOINGS was NEVER the #2 in reality...was never even thought of and Williams has been their present and future...if he does well this year and Foster misses a couple of games this year...Goings will stay and Foster will become trade fodder by this time next year he will be somewhere over the rainbow!!

Williams came to camp with the coaching staff expecting him to give Foster a challenge to start....he has done well and will see action on kickoffs and some series (complete)....watch and see!!!!!!! :D

I totally agree with you here, tomfin. Fox somewhat dissed Goings last year with a careless statement. One which was undeserved for a guy that filled in ADMIRABLY the year before. Speaking as a Steeler fan, we'd take Nick in a heartbeat. :D (He started his college career at Ohio State, then tranferred to Pitt.....he'd be welcomed with open arms, I'm sure.)

I think you have it right, Dave. This happens often....let the rookie learn the offense before throwing him in the fire. Personally....I think you guys have a terrific 1-2-3 punch there. If you look 3 deep in RBs...only maybe Baltimore has a comparable lineup.

With all the guys you have coming back from injuries, your 2006 draft, your offseason acquisitions and some of your 2nd and 3rd year players really coming of age.....if you guys don't get back to the SuperBowl this year, it would be a shame. IMHO, Carolina is already the most improved team from last year. Not in terms of W-L records improving, as SDC's turnaround from 4-12 to 12-4 a few years ago. But top to bottom this is a formidable team. Almost EVERY position has gone up a few notches. They will be very difficult to beat, if they play like they are capable. :D

Dillon, Maroney, Faulk.

Maybe.....but I've never been a Dillon fan.....and Faulk has continually made it clear he wants no part of being The Guy....ever. He's had a ton of chances and never impresses. He's content being a 3rd downer or the pass catcher. I think Goings proved he could get it done when Carolina needed him. :D

Goings is great but if they are so high on him then why did they draft Williams in the first place? :D

I can't help but feel, after watching the 1st team in the preseason so far, that Deshaun will be on a short leash this year so long as the running game remains as unproductive as it has been. IMO, Carolina became a "pass first" offense last year, out of necessity, and is at risk of doing so again, but this goes against Fox's philosophy. Deshaun was the first stater pulled last night because the running game wasn't accomplishing anything. Granted, Williams didn't have any more success than Foster did statistically, but just watching him, you could tell he was far closer to "making something happen" than Foster was. Deshaun, so far, has showed me nothing at all...

ETA: I'm a Foster owner and would like nothing better for him to be the man this year, I'm just not seeing it..
