Thoughts on Billy Volek

I'm thinking about picking this cat up late/cheap as a backup.

Do you think he'll play most of the year? He's put up some great numbers as a starter. I love Volek's potential this year because I think they'll be playing from behind a lot. Garbage points count.

My concern is that TEN is simply a team in rebuilding mode. Once the season is lost, will they throw Young in as a starter to get him some experience? I don't think he's looked very good so far - he's way too skittish in the pocket and takes off at the earliest sign of pressure.

I wasn't impressed at all with what I saw from Volek vs DEN on Saturday, and the DEN D was missing four starters (Courtney Brown & Gerard Warren to injuries & Al Wilson & Champ Bailey to curfew violation benching). He's got happy feet, doesn't look off DBs, and doesn't seem to finish his progressions.

Young, on the other hand looked just like a rookie ought to. He also didn't finish his progressions and didn't step up in the pocket, electing to stretch horizontally to buy time. But what I did like is that he is mobile and can run, he responded very well to a huge hit down near the goal line where he fumbled but was savvy enough to recover his own fumble in the endzone for a TD despite the hit, and what really impressed me was when he was flushed from the pocket and rolled to his right, he threw a pass 55 yds in the air off a dead run that never got more than 20 feet off the ground. That kid has huge arm strength. He's got some learning to do, but I really think Young is the real deal. And the only way he's going to learn is to play.

TEN will be awful this year - there's no reason once they start piling up loses to play Volek over Young, if Volek in fact does beat out Young for the starting spot in week 1.

But if remember right, with Fisher, another guy they had with a lot of talent (McNair) sat out his first season (back when they were still in Houston) -- but maybe they had a veteran starter -- who would that have been? :D

His first year McNair played in 4 games starting 2.

2nd year played in 9 starting 4.

They will probably go with Young earlier this year.

Volek, and the entire Titan team for that matter, looked horrible against Denver. But I dont base any players fantasy value off of 1 preseason game. That just doesnt make any sense. Volek will be the starter for this team for most if not every game this season barring injury. Vince Young is NOT ready and Fisher has no reason to rush him into the lineup. I do believe Young will get some mopup duty and they may design a play or two per game for him. And yes, toward the end of the year, Young may get a start or 2. But this is Voleks team this year. PERIOD! All this other VY will be starting early nonsense is total crap.

That said, I believe that Volek will be a great #2 QB on your team. Again the Titans will NOT be good this year. Their defense will give up points in bunches and they will have to throw to try to catch up. Volek will put up good numbers as a result. I think you definitely should take a late flyer on Volek.

I thought I heard that the team owner told Fisher that he wanted Young playing on or by the game with Houston. Has anyone else heard this or am I just hearing voices in my head?

I don't think its the voices, because they all speak spanish...I wish one of them would get a job.

Bud Adams is from Houston as is Vince Young. Young was a hs legend in Houston and went on to lead the T-Sips to the national championship. I think Bud would like to show up the Houston Texans and show them they made a mistake in not drafting VY. That said, I havent really seen Adams ever tell Fisher who to start and when. I would disregard this rumor completely.

I have a connection to Norm Chow.

Billy Volek is apparently the dumbest QB Chow's ever had to work with. NC is very frustrated to work with him as his #1.

Vince Young is the most physically gifted QB Chow's had to work with since Carson Palmer, the difference being CP was groomed to be a gun-slinger since he was a kid.

He is still a much better athlete than QB, but given Chow's history of working with QBs, I'll take my chances.

On top of that, if TEN is going to be behind in a lot of games, I think they will be in "the future is now" mode, and let VY play. I don't see a Carson Palmer starting off in CIN-type situation here.

Finally, that being said, you would think TEN would commit to bringing in a legitimate stud WR via FA or the draft.

There are plenty of knocks on Billy Volek. The primary one being that he holds on to the ball way way to long and takes too many sacks. That said, I have never heard anyone question Voleks intelligence. Nobody inside or outside of the Titans camp. Vince Young? His intelligence has come under fire repeatedly, and I think unfairly, since he made himself available for the draft. We all recall his infamous wunderlick debacle. That said, I havent heard anything here about VY having any IQ problems since he got to Nashville. Both QB's seem to be adapting to the Chow offense ok.

I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt on having a "connection" to Norm Chow. But what evidence, other than your anonymous connection, can you give me that might indicate that Volek is the dumbest QB Chow has worked with in his long history in football? Volek knows the offense and executes it fairly well. He typically makes good reads. He is not real prone to make obviously stupid decisions on the field. Again, he does tend to hang onto the ball when he should throw it away. And this is the same guy who kept David Carr on the bench for 2 years in college. So, I just dont understand where your connection is saying Volek is the dumbest QB in Chow's tenure.

I like Norm Chow. He made his name locally with BYU.

I have serious doubts that he likes Young over Volek just by looking at the kind of QBs Chow has enjoyed success with in the past.

Young is a great football player, but I doubt he is more intelligent than Volek. At the very least, Volek has shown he can pick up an NFL system and succeed in it. He's got a 60% career completion rate and a 2:1 TD to INT ratio. Not great, but certainly better than any rookie short of Dan Marino will post.

In any case, time will tell.

Yeah, I guess I missed where you said they were going to bring in Collins.

Good luck to any QB with that offensive line- they can't block for....

To the people who say Volek is injury prone- think about this:

The only reason Volek was playing was due to the fact that line let defenses beat McNair into the ground.

BV comes in as the backup and gets the crap beat out of him and he's called injury prone?

This situation is a train wreck, both in fantasy and real life terms. The talks with Collins agent have been going on since late April and maybe earlier. Rumors about Tennessee signing Collins were rampant prior to camp, but nothing ever happened. So, most of us assumed that move was dead. I dont know what changed in the last several months. What I cant understand is if they were going to bring Collins into the fold, why wait until now? Why not bring him in before training camp and give him the opportunity to learn the offense? They knew what they had in Volek as he has been on the roster for 6 years or so. If they werent sold on him as the starter, then why let him go all the way through camp and 3/4 of the pre-season before they bring in some other dude off the street? I think there is more to this story than any of us know at this point.

Speculation is that Floyd Reese is on his way out. Bud Adams moved his right hand man and Titans General Council from Houston to Nashville the day before Collins signed. This guy will essentially handle the duties that Jeff Diamond had from 1999 to 2003. There are also rumors of a rift between Fisher and Reese, although I am not sure how true that is. I am sitting here scratching my head and wondering what the f*ck is going on with this team from the top down...
