I caught the last part of a segment from Mark Madden (Steeler fans know him) and he stated that the Eagles and Steelers were discussing a deal to send Duce Staley back to Philly. More info as it becomes available...

If this happens, it'd mean they are definitely keen on Haynes and the rookie Humes getting pretty significant action. Early word in camp (no link, sorry) was that Humes was looking like The Bus Jr. and may get the short-yardage (read: goal-line) carries. With Staley gone, you could probably ink that.

It's interesting, for sure. Staley hasn't had any kind of a camp and his preseason effeorts have been less than heroic. They got Humes for next to nothing, but he fumbles the way I drink beer (alot and indiscrimintately) so I am not sold on him either. TJ Duckett, we hardly knew ye...Steelers dropped the ball (pun intended) on that one. I watched Humes run the other day at camp and I'll give him this much--he isn't making any cuts. He goes one direction (except when James Harrison invoked the intertia principle and kicked the holy crap outta him).

Why would the Eagles want Staley is my real question...I haven't seen anything that would make me want to trade anything for him.

Why do the Eagles want Staley, you must not be paying attention cuz it's pretty friggin obvious why:

Brian Westbrook (already hurt, won't finish the pre season)

Ryan Moats (apparently this 2nd year guy still hasn't picked up the offense)

Correll Buckhalter (hasn't played football in like 97 years)

Bruce Perry ( 1 NFL start. First pre season game this year 3 fumbles and a concussion)

Thomas Tapeah (missed all of 2005 with a hip he dislocated in the final game of 2004)

Reno Mahe (If you have to start Reno Mahe in a NFL regular season game, your squad is in trouble)

The Birds have a history of bringing back former players:

Dorsey Levens

Hugh Douglas

Shawn Barber

Jeremiah Trotter

Bringing back Duce would make complete sense. He might also warrant a spot on a fantasy roster. Because Westbrook will get hurt sometime during the season. The Eagles have an obvious need at RB, Staley knows the system and could come in immediately and contribute. I would welcome the move, as Duce was an obvious fan favorite in Philadelphia. At this point in his career is he as good a TJ Duckett, I think so and he is a better alternative than Stephen Davis. Plus, as I stated he knows the offense. Heck, he should be healthy and hungry, he hasn't played ball in two years. Bring him back I say.

His name is spelled DUCE.

staley looks like crap and the steelers im sure realize that more than anyone. they wouldnt trade him unless they knew he wasnt going to get the job done.. haynes is great in a change of pace role.. but he's still not starter material. so for duce not to beat haynes out in just short yardage alone is pretty bad. duce looked very slow and was missing a gear that he had in 2004 when he was on fire before getting hurt. i thought staley would bounce back this year but it doesnt look like that will happen. i trust the steelers and their front office.. they are almost always right when it comes to roster moves.

I would love this move. Eagle fan here, no responses please. Before Duce left the 3 headed Rb kicked azz. They are older and nicked up more. But if it worked once, it can work twice. Will shorten up Westbrooks and CBucks carries. P.S. anybody at this point would make me happy. People have even been talking about Dorsey Levens! :D

I've been saying for a while now that I didn't expect Staley to be on the opening day roster. I think Haynes is clearly better than him at this point in their careers, and they have seen enough good things out of Humes to make Staley expendable. If they can get anything for him in a trade, they need to take it, because I think he would eventually be cut from the team anyway. I think goal-line situations for the Steelers are going to differ this year until someone emerges as the clear-cut goal-line back. Parker has surprisingly done well in goaline situations in camp, so don't count him out on getting some more goaline opportunities. I think Heath Miller, Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, & Willie Parker will all benefit fantasy-wise from the Bus not being there this year.

As for Staley, I hate to say it, but, I don't think he has much left. He has looked dreadful in the two preseason games. The only way I can describe it, is he looks like he is running in quicksand. He doesn't have the burst he showed two years ago or even last year, based on what I've seen so far. Cowher said he has looked good at practice, but, that could be coach-speak to try to find a buyer for Duce.

My :D

There is no trade in the works -- nor in their plans -- to send Staley back to the Eagles. Cowher did not say that, but Kevin Colbert, the Steelers' director of football operations, said no one in the organization has had any talks with the Eagles about Staley.

Although Staley started off camp sluggishly and not in football shape, Cowher said he's getting there.

"I think Duce is working himself back into running shape," Cowher said.
