Have you had a successful Auction Draft?

I just had an Auction Draft this last Wednesday (completely took the rest of the league to school)!

Here's a quick way to evaluate your auction... take your roster, and go to the Huddle's Auction Cheat Sheet.

Then just start adding up the percentages of each of the players on your roster. If you end up with over 100%, then at the very least you know that you've gotten good value for your dollar. If you are under 100%, you may have left too much money in your pocket... a leftover balance at the end of an auction draft does you no good.

It doesn't rate your team or anything like that, but it helps to evaluate how you spent your mythical dollars.

I have always found the Huddle's Auction Cheat Sheet to be of little value. Why? Largely because owners tend to way over spend on the top tier players. Once you have 10-15 players going for more than their 'projected' value it skews the rest of the auction.

In my auction leagues we have a salary cap for the entire year ... so money left over can be used for free agent acquisitions. If you have no money left over then you are limited in your bidding to the amount of the salary of the player(s) you intend to cut to make the free agent acquisition.

Agreed on the first point. My auction league has a 14 player, $300 cap. The top level RB's go for $150 to $160 apiece! this is $40 to $50 more than I find on other cheat sheets. Second tier RB's go for $10 to $20 more.

Of course, it means that there is a lot more value to be had in the middle to the end of the auction, particularly on QB's and WR's, and if you don't like blowing half your budget on one player, you'd better be good at picking diamonds in the rough...like I did with LJ last year for $15.

As for the secont point, we set up a $100 auction budget for in-season moves, but if my league wants a change this rule is definitely worth considering.

It's a nice idea but (imo) it just doesn't work.

Why?

Lineup requirements and roster size determine quite a bit of this sort of stuff.

Meaning, what is the value of Lamont Jordan in a 8 team league that starts 1RB w/ no flex position vs. his value in a 16 team league that starts 2RBs and has a flex position? Obviously, he's not worth nearly as much in the first league as he would in the second ... he's a marginal starter in the first league where he will be some teams #1 RB and will probably be better than half of the other #1 RBs in the 16 team league.

Some auctions start off betting high (like 50% salary goin to LJ) then by the end of auction you get people like Jamal Lewis for 1%.

It all depends how the auction starts..impossible to scale or compare auction to auction. Better to just compare teams and not dollar amounts.

I just did my first auciton draft ever and I don't think it was successful. I completely over spent for 3 guys and it hurt me the rest of the auction. I targeted two of them and the other I was going off of the Huddle's value. I did not know what to expect but the top running backs were going for way more than the Huddle's values so the QB's were devalued and going for a lot less. I have an OK team but one I don't think will contend for the Superbowl. I'm hosed in week 7 so I'm just writing it off as a loss as half my team is on a bye then. I do chaulk it up as a learning experience and hopefully the next auction I do will be better.

Probably a better indicator of auction values is a mock auction with the same roster/lineup requirements as your league.

Of course I alwasy take mock auctions with a grain of salt too because I believe owners bid/draft differently (more aggressively) when they are not invested in the resulting team.

Each auction is unique and creating auction value are just a guideline at best. I was in auctions on MON and TUES nights with not only the same roster and scoring rules, but with about half of the same people in each. And yet both auctions were very different. I liked my teams in both but they are very different from each other because it all depends on which players are the best values and that changes from auction to auction.

Some leagues and maybe most will over value RBs but when that happens you either have to play that game or risk having a huge hole on your team that is hard to make up. Bottom line - can you compete with a great team other than totally crappy RBs? Everyone will spend big bucks on their RB1 and sometimes they carry that through RB2 as well. That's why I think it is even more important to have reception points in auction leagues to make players more equivalent.

I was surprised a little at the differences between my two back to back auctions, but in an auction, I guess you should never be surprised at just about anything.
