Hey Art, let me help you out a little bit. It's 2006. That's right, two thousand and six! I know you've been out of the game for a while but you have to stop listening to Al as he is getting up in age and is probably having a few flash backs now and then, and has fallen on his head a few times when stumbling off his walker. :D

I'm gonna give it to you straight, because your a stand up guy and there's no since in beating around the bush.

Jeff George is 70 years old and I know he says he's been "throwing the ball around three or four times a week", trying to stay ready for the call, but that's with his grand kids, and that call has not come for 5 years, until now.

You pissed away 800k but please don't put him on the field. I don't wanna see the poor bastard get killed on the field by some 22 year old pissed off since he was 6 because he threw all those interceptions back in the olden times that cost him his favorite Johnny Sokko lunch pal!

Even if he could throw more then 30 yards, he was slow in his prime and by now he will have been hogtied, and horse-wipped by the time he gets around to throwing it with todays defensive speed.

Do yourself a favor, convert him to an assitant to keep Al happy and save a little face.

This is totally unfair. George will fit right in with this coaching staff. Although they had to pull Jeff away from his youth football coaching duties where he was operating the run and shoot. Maybe he'll be coaching the team soon. What a great hedge in case he doesn't become the next great has been QB to lead the team to the SB.

Personally, I hate this move (should have re-signed Kerry as a backup if Walter is hurt) but this blog entry at least sheds a little light on the situation...

Random observations as the Raiders once again defy convention, common sense, logic and any other quality you care to name by signing Jeff George to a contract:

– There is really only one way this has any effect on the 2006 Raiders _ if George gets into a game.

Odds of that happening? Less than 10 percent. Coach Art Shell said he was “intrigued'’ by George but also said, “we’re going to look at him and see how it goes.'’

– Let’s not fall over ourselves assuming the Raiders don’t like Aaron Brooks. Or that Andrew Walter’s shoulder is in need of reconstructive surgery. Or that Marques Tuiasosopo is headed somewhere by trade.

The bottom line is Al Davis has always liked Jeff George. Just like he always liked Shell. He gave Shell a second chance, now he’s giving one to George.

It’s only a problem if Davis extends his reach and demands that Shell actually play George in a regular-season game. And Shell obeys.

While it’s all in good fun to assume Davis will “dominate'’ everything that goes on between the lines, indications are so far that the 2006 Raiders have been a Shell operation when it comes to the on-field product.

In other words, there’s no guarantee George even makes the roster.

NFL players are not paid until the regular-season. Their salary is divded into 17 weeks of payments. If George got a bonus, odds are it was minimal. The Raiders will be out nothing if they cut him before Sept. 11.

– It probably helped George’s cause that Marty Schottenheimer, upon benching George while coach of the Redskins in 2001, said, “The bottom line is I don’t think the Washington Redskins could win with Jeff George as our quarterback.'’

If that’s what Schottenheimer thinks, it’s good enough of a reason for Davis to give George a shot.

– You want the definitive comment on what it’s like to be a coach with the Raiders? Check out what George to the media about his arrival.

“It was kind of funny. I walked in and the quarterbacks coach looked up and didn’t know who I was. He said, `Oh . . . when did we get you?'’

Defensive end Trace Armstrong said it was comical about how little information was dispensed to players and coaches. Jon Gruden once “cut'’ wide receiver/return specialist David Dunn only to come out to practice the next day and find out he’d been overruled.

Dunn then fumbled away a punt return which cost the Raiders a game against Arizona.

Look, Davis is the boss and can sign and cut whoever he wants. It’s just that communication is not one of his strengths. If you’re the coach of the Raiders, you deal with it.

The head coach has the authority to play who he wants _ but he needs the stomach to stand up to Davis and defend his decision.

– Of course George threw the ball well in practice. He’ll probably be able to throw strikes at age 55. It’s the skill that keeps bringing coaches back to him.

George might be the best practice quarterback of all time. As Gruden said, “He can knock a bird out of at tree while looking the other way.'’

It’s just that once the real games begin, knocking birds out of trees gives way to that old winning and losing thing.

– As big as George’s numbers were in 1997, he was sacked a career-high 58 times _ and it was that stat which contributed to the Raiders having the worst time-of-possession figure in the NFL.

– Funny how George is known for his sideline blowup with June Jones which led to his exit from the Atlanta Falcons. As a Raider, George was so laid-back Gruden called him “The Iceman'’ and he did it with sarcasm.

– If George plays against Seattle Thursday, don’t discount the possibility of him doing well. He arrived late to camp in 1996 with the Falcons, took the field against the Raiders, and cut their vanilla defense to ribbons without much practice.

When the Raiders got back to Napa, defensive coordinator John Fox left the Marriott and never came back.

When George was the starting quarterback for Minnesota in 1999, Randy Moss had 80 receptions for 1,413 yards and 11 touchdowns. Shell confirmed Moss was one of the Raiders who had lobbied for George.

Shell didn’t say who else, Lance Johnstone played with the Vikings while George was there. The only Raider on the roster who was with the team in 1997 was center Adam Treu.

– It’s possible the Raiders were simply attempting to pay George back for absorbing those seven sacks from Derrick Thomas in the 1998 season opener in Kansas City.

Did he like him after giving him a $40Million contract and then stinking up the colliseum?

And leadership? Leadership where?

Hey, hey hey... c'mon now... talking common sense here is no fun for Raider haters!!

Most Raider fans hate this move as much as the next guy, but really the worst this will ever do is give Raider bashers somethign to poke us with. Now, say we go and sign the guy who, I don't know, humiliated us by showboating on the Star sheild in the middle of our field, then THAT is somethign to laugh about. But no team would throw their self respect away and do that, right? :D

Hold on there sparky. I can't let you get away with that. Signing a problem "Player" is one thing, but the key word here is "Player". Signing Jeff George is like putting spinners on a Dodge colt (which I have seen). I may like them but everyone, and I mean everyone is going to look and say what the f...

I'm sorry but calling Jeff George on the phone to evite him for dinner is one thing, but signing him to an NFL contract is quite another. Walters with a missing right arm is a better option.

TO on the other hand is a "Player" with a huge amount of upside. George is.......well.......Jeff George, need I say more.

Sure, make that moment TO took a hot, steaming dump on Cowboy pride all OK because he's a "player"... and George isn't...

If that makes ya feel better, then good for you!

Ok lets compare organizational wisdom. The Raiders just signed Jeff George, while the cowboys signed perhaps the best wide out in the NFL. Sure George is not a trouble maker but what exactly does he bring to the table besides refeshments?

I feel better knowing TO will help us get to miami while George will help you secure your spot in dumba$$ Raider signing lore.

TO has been using Jeff George's "derbys for Dummies" Book now for years. George is the original TO

Sure he's old. Sure he's an a$$hat. Will he ever see the field? Doubt it. Has he ever embarass the Raiders by humiliating them in the middle of their own field for the world to see? Not the last time I looked.

Until he signed on the 'Boys, you guys were laughing it up at Philli's expense for signing The Player and he was public enemy #1 for what he did in your house. Don't pretend TP, who is only "perhaps" the best WR in the game (since his stats have never bested Marvin Harrison's and he sure as hell doesn't have anythign comparable to leadership skills) is helping you get to Miami so it's all OK. You know deep inside you hate Jones for betraying every fan who had an ounce of Cowboy pride by signing him. Just admit it. :D

When he was with Seattle in 2002, Hasselbeck credited George for being a good mentor to him....

Also, the one year he started for the Raiders he threw for 29 TDs, 14 INTs and over 3000 yards, the loosing season they had wasnt completely his fault (just like last years wasnt completely Collins fault)...Joe Bugal was the coach at the time, enough said.

Sometimes its way too easy to throw a QB under the bus when the rest of the team looks like sh.it...kind of reminds me of Green Bay right now... except Favre is way to holy for the press to talk negatively about...at least the press got it right in that situation.

Oh, by the way, nice game Woodson had last week...wasnt he burned for 2 TDs while on the field....better hope he agrees to move to safety because he has completely lost at as a cornerback. How much did you pay this guy again? :D
