Auction Strategy

I've played in auctions for several years now. My strategy has always been to make value picks and build a deep team of talented players. As a result, I rarely ever get top RBs. This strategy has become a bit predictable to people in my league and I think they pretty much know what I'm going to do.

So I'm thinking of doing a 180 on them--exactly the opposite. I'm wondering if anyone has bid and won two of the top three RBs (LT, LJ, Alexander) this year. Based on previous auctions, I would expect it would take a max of $160 of my $200 budget -- leaving me with $40-$45 to fill out the remainder of my roster spots.

If anyone has tried this approach, please post what the rest of your roster looks like. Or speculate on what other players I could get.

More likely, I will grab one of the top 3 and a guy like R. Brown or Cadillac, but I'm just curious.

I haven't tried that strategy and have never even thought about it. Simply put, it would leave my team very top heavy, having little or no depth, and one injury away from being a poor team.

A guy in one of my leagues did that a few years ago and got destroyed because of an injury. He had no depth and no trade bait. he did not make the playoffs.

In theory though, I like that strategy... but it's a high risk/high reward type of move.

Just happened in our league's auction a couple weeks ago. That was his stated strategy and he accomplished it. And the ratio was almost exactly as you mentioned. He spent 80% of his allottment on these two.

His WR's are a bit suspect, but this guy did a great job getting Jamal Lewis as well as the back-ups for each of his starting RB's.

(10 man league), PPR, start 2 WRs & 2 Rbs as well as a flex guy - either a rb or wr.

Time will tell.

Here's his roster:

QB Drew Bledsoe DAL

QB Drew Brees NO

RB Shaun Alexander SEA

RB Mike Anderson BAL

RB Jamal Lewis BAL

RB Michael Turner SD

RB LaDainian Tomlinson SD

RB Curtis Martin NYJ

RB Maurice Morris SEA

WR Isaac Bruce STL

WR Antonio Bryant SF

WR Brandon Lloyd WAS

49% WR Rod Smith DEN

WR Keenan McCardell SD

WR Nate Burleson SEA

TE L.J. Smith PHI

PK Shayne Graham CIN

Def Steelers

Depends on the scoring system.

I am in a local newbie league where the scoring favors RBs (alot) so I did that last year. I had LT, Edge, and Rudi Johnson....no depth no other positions and I won it all.

I must admit I got lucky because during the SB I think Steve Smith got ejected and I won by 1 in the lowest scoring week of the year.

As I was toying with the idea, I thought I could take LT and Alexander. Then proceed to get Turner and Morris for $3 total. Grab one more back with decent upside (Lendale White). Spend $15 on a mid-level wideout. $10 on a mediocre QB with upside (Brees or Vick). And round out the team with $1-$2 players.

I have certainly seen it done and I have never seen it work. You are so heavily invested in those two backs that you pretty much are certain to lose two games during their bye weeks and with most leagues using nine starters, you are hoping that 20% of your starters can beat 100% of other teams starters. It really only feels good for about ten minutes until you start to realize what the rest of your team is going to look like.

In most scoring systems, no, not really.

It is extremely high risk/reward though, and most of the time I agree with DMD that the odds are against you.

Having said that, I ended up doing something similar this year because for some strange reason the league wasn't bidding up the 2d tier guys very high early on...didn't end up with 2 of the top 3, but did get 3 of about the top 10-12. My QB is iffy and I hate not having a top WR, but I do have some upside and they aren't THAT pathetic. I also managed an upper tier TE (Heap).

It really depends on the scoring system (really heavy scoring in favor of one position over the others is required), lineup requirements (the fewer the starters the better) ... and it depends on whether or not it's a keeper league (redrafters are preferred).

Also, if there is $$ awarded for weekly high scores, that's a bonus. Or, if it's a total points league, that would work too.

A couple of years ago, I got LT for (iirc) 100 of my 250 cap, SA for 85, and scored a big-time deal on Culpepper for like 40 ... and managed to hit big with DJax for 5, CJohnson for 5, Porter for 2 and a bunch of crap for 1-2 each. We started 2RBs and 2WRs w/ no flex and a RB-heavy scoring system.

Remember, in most leagues, there's not really any financial or ego difference in finishing 4th as there is in finishing 9th ... so, might as well go for the homerun (esp. if it's a redrafter league).

i won the Corleone auction league(3 yrs ago) with LT and PRIEST(was really just trying to bid them up and got "stuck" with them)

we also knew it would be a keeper league(3 players with salary increase) and I kept Priest LT and i dont remember who but I picked up LJ off the wire 2 yrs ago and won the league for the 2nd cosecutive yr...i then retired and LosG took over my team and completed a 3Peat with what I left him....and if memory serves me right there were no PPRs either

I got LT for $69 of a $150 cap. SA and LJ both went for $68, and both before LT came up for bid. Needless to say, you could not have had two of them in my league. You would have had $13 left for 13 players. Theoretically possible but not practically.

One guy had SA, Priest, and LJ in our auction last year. He won the regular season, but lost in the playoffs because either SA or LJ had a normal week instead of a monster week. For his QB, he had to play the match-ups with Joey Harrington, Brian Greise, and Byron Leftwich.

You lie! :D

I did it the first year in the Core. I won both Faulk and Edge (right after his hugh rookie year). The key was that I turned around anbd traded Edge for a lesser back (I believe his name was Warrick Dunn) and two receivers to balance off my team (Thanx muck!) I promptly went on to win the Championship that year. Ahh, that's why he wants to forget it, I beat DMD in the championship that game. :D

I could definitely live with this. However, I'm in a 12-team league, so I would imagine my RB2 would be considerably worse than JLewis. QB is about what I'd expect. WRs are suspect, as you say. However, you can usually nab one decent WR off the waiver wire if you work at it. TE, PK, and DEF are in great shape.

:D I was down by 30 something points and had already posted a congratulatory message on the board to DMD. Only to wake up and find out Dunn had gone apeAthena in that game and pulled it out for me.

He only got 49% of Rod Smith. :D Who got the other 51%?

Aahh...

I was wondering what the h-ell you were talking about until I re-read my original post.

The 49% is a number I accidentally did not delete when I transferred over the roster from the cut/paste from the fanball site. In case you care, it refers to either 49% of leagues he's owned in, or 49% of people that have him have him in their starting lineup, one of the two - not sure which, probably the latter.

I was a behind a buttload of points going into Monday night's game and I got 3 touches from Dunn and 4 from Marshall. I had already congratulated the other team. To this day the old commissioner still has this dude's 2nd place trophy as he never claimed it. I don't blame him.

I was thinking about taking a shot at this in my league but someone was about to grab Rudi Johnson for $15 in a $100 cap league. I had to bid 16 and got him for that price. We use a flex player that can be a RB so I was happy with Rudi, Lamont, and C Williams as my 3 starters with Mike Bell (hopefully) and D Rhodes being my bye week backups.

I have hated Warrick Dunn ever since and I imagine that game remains a career high for him now six years later.

Not that it bothers me. I can hardly even remember it. He may have ran 22 times for 145 yards with 53 more yards receiving for a total of 198 yards and three touchdowns, but I can't even hardly remember that year or that game, let alone what one player did.
