RokoMotion Posted August 30, 2006 Share Posted August 30, 2006 I play in a total points league, so consistency of players doesn't matter much when drafting. This means that after you draft your starters, you're looking more for backups who could "come up huge" after an injury to some one ahead of them on a depth chart, or after the midway point of the season. Last year, I was one of the fools that drafted Charles Rogers as my WR3. Needless to say, he stunk up my lineup. Fortunately, I had targeted Kevin Curtis from STL long before the draft, and he ended up being a great WR3 until I could acquire some one more solid. I got Curtis in one of the last rounds of the draft, as he was ranked so low because he was a backup WR and offered no consistent stats...his upside, however, for TOTAL points was very high. He paid off, and I won my league (I drafted Larry Johnson with a similar mindset, to back up Willis McGahee and Chris Brown). First, I'd like to ask what Wide Receivers are out there that I could similarly target that COULD put up large numbers if perhaps given the opportunity this year. muck Posted August 30, 2006 Share Posted August 30, 2006 I think that Chad Johnson is in a position to put up some big numbers. I think that he has a good rapport w/ his QB and the coaches like him. How about Samie Parker in KC. Doug Gabriel or Ronald Curry in OAK, maybe? Peerless Price may be rejuvenated in BUF? Bobby Engram in SEA? Etc... And he also has a key element going for him - he & Rivers were on the same level at SD last year, meaning Rivers had plenty of reps while Jackson was on the field. I think that showed in the preseason, where Rivers threw a fade in the endzone to Jackson where he stepped OB to catch the ball (a TD reversed on a challenge, I think) and then Rivers went right back to him on the same route for a TD. It looks like Rivers trusts him - that's a large factor, especially with an inexperienced QB. I agree that Jackson is a nice sleeper that can be had very late in drafts. Dont remember the game, but I saw one he played in this preseason, and that dude has some serious moves. If they get him the ball, he will impress. Favre will be throwing the ball a lot this year (that is if his young offensive line can keep him up) and Jennings will benefit from Driver receiving attention on the other side. (41-681-7 vs 35-445-0) It's just a matter of time before Jax gives up on him. He was a high draft pick in 2004, ninth overall. With Matt Jones taking over for retired Smith the WR2 position is coming down to these two. Wilford had a real nice 16.6 ypc last year. I drafted him in the 14th round of my local and has been under the radar in most mocks also. Williams also has a dope smoking charge pending that could land him in rehab. I like the gamble but this situation is as up in the air as they come. I LOVE Matt Jones though and I think he is worth a reach in some drafts. But he is from Michigan....David Terrell anyone? EDIT: This guy COULD breakout but he had a knack from dropping clutch passes in college. Who knows how that translate to the NFL. Engram is one D-Jax or Burleson reinjury away from taking back a starting WR role, and would still have bench value in PPR leagues even if he didn't. Wilson is a decent call, as he appears firmly entrenched as the Steelers' #2 WR. The problem is merely that the Steelers will most likley not throw enough for him to be useful on a consistent basis. In unrelated news, I have made the painful decision not to write Waiver Wire Warriors (aka the Trash Can Report) this year. Loved doing it, and hope I'll be able to in future seasons.
