Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) and CB Shawn Springs (abdomen) are the only players whose availability is in serious doubt for the opener. "Most of the other guys are ready to roll," Gibbs said. Ladell Betts and T.J. Duckett figure to split carries in Week 1.

This shoulder injury MUST be worse than what was originally reported. Are you guys starting to worry that this injury is going to have a big affect on Portis season?

As a skins fan it really bothers me. He better be good to go. but i do not own him on my league

This is from my league on RTSports, so I cannot provide a link but the information on Portis is at the bottom of the quote under notes.

Redskins figure out ways to say 'So what?' over 0-4 preseason

By JOSEPH WHITE - AP Sports Writer

2006-09-02 02:21

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -It's time for the Washington Redskins to bid good riddance to one of the worst preseasons in franchise history.

``Am I glad it's over? Yeah,'' coach Joe Gibbs said.

Final score: Opponents 104, Redskins 27. Washington's points were its fewest since at least 1961, the earliest year for which team preseason records are available.

The starting offense never scored, never even got into the red zone. The last of the debacles was Thursday night's 17-10 loss to Baltimore, when the Redskins' only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter with only the die-hards still watching.

In the locker room, Gibbs' words were echoed by his players. Sure, if the team had played well, they would have said that the preseason was a springboard for the regular season. As it was, the exhibitions didn't mean squat.

``Nobody really likes preseason,'' defensive end Andre Carter said. ``But it's part of the game. Now that it's over, the real bullets fly. Everything you do from here on out matters. Practices, meetings, film study and the game. It's time to roll.''

By now, the stats are familiar. The last time Gibbs went 0-4 in the exhibitions was 1982, the season he won his first Super Bowl. Al Saunders, the assistant coach in charge of the offense, has lost 10 straight preseason games, including his last six in Kansas City, which would appear to back up his statements that he uses the August games to test certain plays rather than concentrate on putting together lasting drives.

Quarterback Todd Collins, who came with Saunders from the Chiefs this offseason, didn't even realize that he had gone winless for two straight preseasons.

``I don't even remember what we were last season or the year before,'' Collins said. ``It's just a different perspective on how to approach the preseason games.''

But the question remains: Can the Redskins simply flip on the switch when they open the regular season Sept. 11 against Minnesota? The attitude of Saunders and defensive coach Gregg Williams has been something like: ``Yes, we're flunking algebra, but we'll be able to handle calculus.''

But Gibbs isn't as confident, at least not in public. Yes, the Redskins have been running simplified schemes, but so have the other teams.

``Everybody else is doing the same thing,'' Gibbs said. ``There's no excuse. They're doing the same thing we're doing, and they end up winning the ballgame.''

Still, Gibbs didn't seem particularly upset over his players' performances, and he made clear his focus all along has been on Minnesota and the games that follow. The Hall of Fame coach is usually a master at downplaying expectations, but an 0-4 preseason has done that bit of work for him.

``The next eight days, we've got a lot of straightening out to do,'' Gibbs said. ``And we've certainly got to find a way to play much better.''

Notes: Gibbs said RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) and CB Shawn Springs (abdomen) are the only players whose availability is in serious doubt for the opener. ``Most of the other guys are ready to roll,'' Gibbs said. ... Gibbs gave a vote of confidence to punter Derrick Frost, who ended what had been a shaky preseason with six punts for a 47.2 average against the Ravens. ``I feel like he stood up and competed,'' Gibbs said. ``He said, 'I'm the guy.''' ... Gibbs also said he will stick with kicker John Hall, who went 1-for-2 against Baltimore and 2-for-4 for the preseason. ``John's our guy,'' Gibbs said. ``We've got a seasoned, veteran guy there.'' ... S Reed Doughty's baby was born several weeks premature. Doughty, on the bubble for a roster spot, missed Thursday's game to fly to Colorado to attend the birth. ... The Redskins must cut 22 players from the roster on Saturday, the NFL deadline for establishing a 53-man roster.

Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis' (shoulder) status for the regular-season opener Sept. 11 is uncertain.

Fantasy Impact: We'll know more next week, but nothing is certain right now. Portis seems 50/50.

Oh well.Looks like Frank Gore in week 1 vs. the cards.I was skeptical about Portis when I took him 10th overall but I thought he was good value at that pick.Only time will tell.

I think he was a great value at that pick. But this lingering shoulder problem is troubling...

Could this be a little smoke and mirrors coming from Gibbs? Make the Vikings prepare for Betts/Duckett and then give them Portis???

I hope so... :D

I took him at 2.3 after the injury and early indications were that he would be ready by week one. Even so, I would rather have him back 100% (or as close as possible) if it means him sitting a couple more weeks.

i picked him up at 1.9 in my local. followed with westy. ppr league and i'm a little concerned with both of them. good thing for me, i was drafting with people with magazines for cheat sheats. i was able to land chester taylor in the 4th, chris brown in the 8th and dominic rhodes int the 10th. i think i'll be alright, even if my stalwarts portis and westy sit week 1.

Agreed, - I happend to grab Portis at 1.11, and Westy on the turn- PPR league as well. I have faith, I mean Portis may sit wk1, but what back isn't banged up during the year at some point?- so Portis is nicked pre-season, I think he will rebound and be solid all year.

cliaz any feel as to who the main back would be if he does miss time.

Duckett is being picked very early but Betts is going late or undrafted.

Not sure if he was worth a shot to add to the roster

Betts would get all of the non-3rd down and goal line carries. But it really would depend because Gibbs/Saunders like to get other players involved in the goal line packages.

Safest bet would be Betts for now.

Gibbs doesn't work that way.

I'll keep all of the portis non-homers abreast of the situation through the week.

heh...i said breast.

Gibbs never at any point said "doubtful" in that press confrence. He was asked about injuries and responded that everyone but CP and Springs were guaranteed starts for Minnesota. That doesn't really clear anything up for me. He's outa the sling and participating in practice, thats the only for sure info anyones got at this point. If any CP owners wanna watch the press confrence for themselves go to redskins.com, has the whole press conf.

Just drafted him last night. :D Only a 10 team league and he fell to 2-5. I couldn't resist. I'd rather he gets healthy for the remainder of the season. I still managed to grab D. Foster . My 1-6 pick was S. Jackson

so I should be ok.

IM assuming this is a keeper league.
