Savage Beatings
Foley shot by police. Seems like something like this right before the start o the season could really screw up your team. Does this drop the Chargers Defense in your rankings at all?
McBoog
Foley is a beast on the field and was clearly the starter, but, an aging veteran with less than average pass coverage skills. The Chargers kept an unheard of TEN Linebackers on the 53-man squad. That is almost 20% of the roster. They are DEEP with talent here! They play the 3-4, which requires more depth anyway. Phillips, Wilhelm and Cooper are all starters for most other NFL teams, and it is probably good at this point that Donnie Edwards did not get traded after all. Phillips is the replacement for Foley on the weak side and he is a better pass defender, both coverage and rush, but is not as stout against the run mm (Phillips would sometimes replace Merriman on passing downs! ). This will be compensated for by the coaches and I personally don’t see any drop off in overall production, and from a Fantasy perspective may actually help. If there is any drop-off, it could be in real-life performance. If that weak-side, corner of the D is more susceptible to the run, you may see more rushing attempts against the San Diego front, something that most teams gave up on very early in the game. A big problem the San Diego D has had the last few years is that the run D forces more passing attempts by the opponent. I think there was only one team that had more passes thrown at them last year than the Chargers. The problem lays not so much in the number against, or even total completions (bend but don’t break philosophy of the 3-4), but there just haven’t been the ball hawks getting turnovers. With better play from the corners, the addition of Cromartie, and the HUGE free agent pick-up of McCree, I think you will see this unit at least double or more the number of picks you will see this year. McCree has been a force already! The secondary had been divided by coaching personalities and their communication on the field sucked. That has all changed this year. McCree, who is very vocal, has taken over as the “QB” of this D and their on-field communication has never been this good! I personally think the Chargers D could be one of the big surprise Ds this year. Especially in leagues where low scores are awarded for points against the D only. You don’t run on the Bolts, and it should be a lot harder to pass on them as well. The Chargers will need them all to play "Lights Out" until Rivers gets his mojo rollin'. IF the Bolts can compensate early for the unknown quantity that is their QB, they are easily a top five team this year on both sides of the ball. Did that help? Chargerz
I agree with McBoog. With the Bolts' depth at linebacker I don't see a dropoff in the Charger "D" at all.

McBoog
per kffl What is sad is that this will not help Steve deal with whatever is causing this sh!t. Oh, well. This keeps them from having to cut someone when they trade for Voleck (SP?)
Savage
The guy that is going to take his place is Shawn Phillips. This guy is a much better pass rusher than Foley. He gets off the line so fast. In fact Shotty said his speed is very similar to Derrek Thomas. This may be a blessing in disquise. Phillips is a player and with Donnie Edwards still around it is still one of the elite front 7's in the NFL. On a side note the starting unit for the Chargers only allowed 1 TD this pre season and that TD was a short field. If your scoring system scores sacks this should be a top tier D. Secondary has improved as well.
