KFFL) John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans RB Ron Dayne, who weighs 245 pounds, is expected to be used in short-yardage and goaline situations with the Texans. Rookie RB Wali Lundy is expected to remain the starting running back. "He gives us a real bruiser," head coach Gary Kubiak said of Dayne. "He can pound the ball. He's got more size than our other two. Because we're familiar with him, he can step right into our offense on Tuesday (Sept. 5) and know exactly what we're doing. At this point that's a tremendous advantage for us."

Lundy has more to worry about in regard to Morency stealing time than Dayne.

Kubiak is smarter than that. :D

Sounds like Gary is becoming Skelator Jr. Sounds like BS for other coaches to scheme for.

Dayne is not a power back unless there is a bag of doughnuts in th endzone.

People will write anything. Ron Dayne, is not and will never be a short yardage back. He goes down on first contact. He a big fat tub of goo that thinks he's a scat back.

Morency will be the man this season in Houston

all though that won't equal much 785yds 5tds

thier running game is just going to plain suck

Just curious, but if that is true, why is Morency #2 on the depth chart? And given how well DD ran in HOU, why would you put the running numbers so low with Kubiak now in charge?

This was my first reaction as well.

The reason Dayne was such a colossol failure in NY is because they mistook him for a short-yardage back. He's not. So they cut him. Denver saw his potential as a larger version of the one-cut back, but he couldn't beat out Cedric Cobbs.

So, what's left for the big man? If he can't do goalline and he can't beat out scrubs for speed, then he's a backup. I fret not for Lundy.

In trying to make sense of this, I would have to give the quote from Kubiak some credence and more than a dismissal. Didn't Kubiak just go out and sign Dayne? Didn't he coach him in Denver, so wouldn't he know what Dayne can do? Would he sign him and speak highly of him if he thought he was a bum with no value? Sounds like he should have some impact on the situation in Houston, and to ridicule the thought seems short sighted and dismissive to me. Just my opinion, but it makes some sense, especially if you want Lundy to be a semi-full time tailback this season and not get hammered at the goal line.

For what it's worth, I think Shanahan screwed up royally on that call & cut the wrong guy.

Far be it from me to think I know NFL RBs better than Shanahan, but the two times previous to this that I thought he was way off base was with Q Griffin being named a starter and with Clarett. This is the third time that I think he dropped the ball with RB selection, but like I said, it's Shanahan and it's awfully hard to argue his RB judgment.

I personally think that if Cobbs gets time vs the #1 Ds that he's going to flop like a beached sturgeon, and Shanahan will wish he had kept Dayne around instead.

This may very well be true, but you can't deny the fan appeal. :D

During the last preseason game, the local channel carrying the game had a poll on their website asking who the starting RB should be Week 1.

I voted for M Bell (selfish dynasty owner), but Cobbs was winning in a landslide. I couldn't believe it.

I think Lundy has nothing to worry about. NOTHING. He will make the best of his chance and fit well with the blocking scheme. Lundy will be a household name after this season. The Texans are going to improve many times over with the signing of Moulds and the revamped Defense. I am not saying this as a HOU fan, because that I am not, but as an unbiased football fan.

In one league, I decided to exchange Lundy (bench) to upgrade at WR, going Lundy and Givens to Drew and Mason. Not down on Lundy, but Mason was am immediate improvement for me.

I did the same thing. I traded Lundy straight up for Andre Johnson which is now my WR #3. I just thought it was unlikely that I would ever use Lundy with Portis, Kevin Jones, Frank Gore, Mike Bell, and Deangelo Williams on the roster. I was thin at WR after Chad Johnson and Randy Moss...left only with Ernest Wilford.

Anyways, to get back to the original post. I honestly think Dayne is only for depth purposes. He is ok for a last resort I guess.

S.T.

Except against Dallas, the rat bastage...I spewed turkey all over the TV that day.
