Auction League question

I have been doing auction style for many years and I prefer the style (makes you feel more of a GM).

This year someone won a player for $25. Later in the draft another player offered 30$ for that player. The comish said no trading allowed during the draft. There wasn't any dispute or anything but now the league is thinking of changing that rule. Do you guys allow something like this?

This is a RARE occurance but we feel we should address this and make it a formal rule so in the future we won't have a dispute.

Wow... I've only been involved in auctions for a few years now, but have never seen a trade offer arise during the draft. Very strange situation... why wouldn't that owner have just bid on the guy instead of waiting and offering a trade? I don't like it. Part of the auction strategy involves watching other owners run up the bid on players that they want. I think that you either have to enter into the bidding war, or else wait until after the draft is complete to make a transaction.

I have been in auctions for years also and this is the first time it has come up. It wasn't an issue at all as both owners just agreed with the comish so it wasn't a big deal. But you can never be too careful so we will add a rule in the books for it.

The reason he didn't overbid was because at that time there were many RBs. So near the end of the auction he was offering a premium for that RB. The other owner was happy with the premium so he would have accepted it. Again, this wasn't anything sneaky or suspicious at all. Just curious to see how others would handle it.

I personally say no traded during the dradt what-so-ever

I can think of at least one reason you might want to up the bid on a player already awarded ... perhaps the last player in that tier was just awarded and NOW you'd be willing to pay a bit more for one of your targeted players. Surely there are others :D

I see no reason NOT to allow trades during an auction. Although if it is a trade it shouldn't be at a different salary, otherwise it is a re-bid and bidding should be open to all owners.

For the most part I find our auctions move too fast to have trades occuring during the auction.

I've never been in an auction where a player was traded, let alone for more money than his award amount. If everyone agrees, then it's fine but it also becomes a headache to track why someone is $5 short if salaries exist into the season.

We can trade Salary in our league. So I guess it could have been 25$ for the player + 5$ extra compensation but the player would have been put in the books for 25$.

Our auctions move slow as hell :D

We had never had a trade during the auction and I for one feel that it makes no sense not to. Because the auction moves so quickly, teams have no time in between bidding to discuss a trade, and they're certainly reluctant to ask for a break to talk trade.

I instituted a rule this year that stated that, at any time, any team could stop the auction for 1 minute to discuss a trade. If the minute passed and they were still discussing, the auction would resume without them.

Results: We had four trades at the auction this year and we only stopped for a total of two minutes. While two teams stopped the auction to discuss a trade with another team, the other teams used the break to chat amongst themselves and two additional trades were pulled off.

As for a commish not allowing a trade, I have to wonder why. Seems like they were too lazy to add back auction dollars or move players.

In my league we have never allowed trading during the draft. Once the draft is over then you can trade all you want. If the guy wanted the said player for $30 then he should have bid on him. It defeats the whole purpose of the auction draft if you allow trading like that.....Anyways, just my 2 cents.

We do the same. After the draft trades can be made-dollar for dollar.

Several years ago this happened at one of my local's drafts and it turned into a lady dog. (Some owner had a vendetta and expressed his displeasure in a stupid manner). The league voted to not allow trades during the draft but trade all you want afterwards. Have never had a problem since. Our drafts also move rather quickly, (mainly because the world-class auctioneer we use keeps it moving) so there isn't really a lot of time to negotiate a trade.

We have been doing this type of dealings for a couple of years now. We even have break times setup in the auction.

This year it was the WRs that went for more money then expected. After the first five go you realise you should have bid more. So you strike up a trade for the player. You get the player and the other guy get your money. I guess i don't think it is a big deal.

Interesting idea, but IMO it complicates things too much during the draft.

My live-auction league doesn't allow trades, period, so I haven't had to deal with this experience. But auction time is auction time, there should NOT be trade talk during the auction. As soon as the gavel drops on the last player, fine, work out all the trades you want. But trading DURING the auction, when dollars and rosters are all up in the air? No way, it's hectic enough and the auction takes long enough as it is.

Peace
