McKinnie agrees to 7-year, $48 million deal extension

The Vikings have agreed to terms on a seven-year contract extension with left tackle Bryant McKinnie, a deal first reported Friday night by FOXsports.com. The contract, worth $48.5 million, gives the Vikings the NFL's highest-paid offensive line.

If all goes well, the team could announce the deal today. McKinnie's current contract would stay in place this season, and the extension -- which includes just under $18 million in guaranteed bonuses -- would kick in next year and keep him under contract until 2013.

McKinnie's new contract comes six months after the Vikings signed left guard Steve Hutchinson to a seven-year, $49 million deal that included $16 million in guarantees. McKinnie's deal is worth $48.5 million because Hutchinson has a clause in his contract that requires the entire deal to be guaranteed if he is not the Vikings' highest-paid offensive lineman in 2006.

McKinnie, who will turn 27 later this month, could earn up to $54 million based on incentives and escalators in later years of the deal.

McKinnie, Hutchinson and center Matt Birk have contracts that total $128.33 million if all three players complete the full terms of their deals. The contracts included nearly $40 million in guaranteed money.

McKinnie never has made the Pro Bowl, but coaches and scouts have noted a steady elevation in his play since the Vikings made him the No. 7 overall pick in the 2002 draft.

The deal arrived exponentially quieter than McKinnie's first contract with the Vikings, which came after a bitter 98-day holdout in 2002. McKinnie missed the first eight games of that season, but played the following week and has started 56 consecutive games.

They pretty much had to do this and do this now. McKinnie would become a FA after this seaason, and while he isn't the greatest Tackle out there, he is definitely a vital part of this offense... one that we cannot afford to allow another team to Poison Pill away from us.
