PaulOttCarruth
According to Denver Post Mike Bell, part II of the Broncos' running back committee, said he suffered a displaced fracture on a middle finger after he was blown up trying to block Little. No indication on how it will affect his playing status.
i_am_the_swammi
Wonder if the finger, or this, will affect his playing time going forward: HIT OF THE DAY: Welcome to the NFL On the Plummer sack and fumble, St. Louis defensive end Leonard Little absolutely blew up rookie running back Mike Bell. Little knocked Bell completely out of the play on his way to knocking down Plummer. Bell had said all preseason that his biggest task was picking up the NFL blitz. It didn't take him long to realize he has more work to do. "It was physical out there," Bell said I wonder if thats why Tatum garnered 50% more carries than Mike? Bronco Billy
It says in the article that he hurt the finger while trying to block Little at the end of the first quarter. It should be noted that M Bell had 9 of his 10 carries and 2 of his 3 carries after that point in the game. Also interesting that M Bell was isolated on Little in that play with no help. Someone else screwed the pooch - I find it impossible to believe that a scripted play would have a RB isolated on the other team's top rushing DE with no help from the line at all. Bell didn't stand much of a chance on the play - and few RBs in the NFL would have in that situation.
Bronco Billy
I wonder if thats why Tatum garnered 50% more carries than Mike? I think that was due a lot more to Shanahan out-thinking himself while trying to establish again what a genius he is. Make no mistake - T Bell played very well (excepting the fumble, of course), but I thought the offense was a lot more coherent & consistent with M Bell in the game. I found it very interesting that when T Bell was in the game on a 3rd & 1 that Shanahan decided to throw for the first down (resulting in a sack and a punt) but when M Bell was in the game on 4th & 1 Shanahan decided to run M Bell to get the first down. That says worlds to me. I think Shanahan decided to start T Bell to try to alleviate any rookie jitters for M Bell, but the play-every-other-series strategy baffled me completely and was completely out of character for Shanahan, and I think contributed greatly to the inconsistency in the offense (Javon Walker not being able to catch anything other than a cold didn't help much either ). Sgt. Ryan
Is Plummer going to be this bad all season. That is a better question, because that Rook looked pretty good in the preseason. Though teams will throw the kitchen sink at him early on and Denver wont make the playoffs, but he could be a better fantasy Qb.

Last year's 13-3 DEN team completely collapsed against MIA in week 1 last year. Actually I thought it was completely impressive that the D kept STL's formidible O out of the end zone all game despite regularly playing on a very short field and being on the field for so long. Shanahan ought to be able to straighten out the O - it's certainly his strength as a coach. But a for the insight....this is why the Huddle boards are valuable tools to understanding the game behind the stats. I would have guessed that Tatum was the guy with more value going forward, but if Bell is getting the TD/short yardage carries, it tells me they still don't beleive Tatum to be a tough-enough rusher. Big Score 1
According to www.rockymountainnews.com Bell is having the finger looked at today to determine if surgery is needed. Mike Bell expects to have the finger examined today to determine if surgery is needed.

The statline doesn't show it but it seemed like the same old Tatum.

cdrudge
No indication on how it will affect his playing status. Suck it up Bell, tape your finger to the one next to it and be a man.
Bronco Billy
For what it is worth, let's not lose sight of the fact that this is what Mike Bell said, and not the coaching staff, the trainer, or a medical professional releasing the information. Doesn't mean it's wrong, but take it with a grain of salt - patience will be rewarded with accurate information on Bell's finger.
Spartans91
If surgery is needed and time will be missed - Mr. Cobbs may be joining my ballclub this week. No way Tatum is given ALL the carries.

Bronco Billy
link TAPE IT UP: Running back Mike Bell said he will practice this week and be ready to play Sunday despite suffering a fracture to his right middle finger. Bell was wearing a splint on the finger, but he said he planned to just tape the finger to one of his other fingers against the Kansas City Chiefs. That's how he finished the game in St. Louis as well after suffering the injury during the first quarter. "It was a fracture, the bone came out, the fingernail came out, but (the finger) looked like it went back in place," Shanahan said. "He should be able to go." "It's fine now; it was pretty bad during the game," Bell said. "It will be all right. I can play. . . . Just tape my fingers together and just play." Bell said he suffered the injury on the first-quarter fumble by Plummer. Bell tried to block Rams defensive end Leonard Little up high and was pushed aside by Little. "I don't know exactly when during that play," Bell said. "I don't know if it was the hit, if he stepped on me or when I was trying to recover the fumble." Bell finished with 58 yards on 10 carries. The Broncos gave Bell the ball on their only touchdown play of the game. He scored on a 1-yard leap just before halftime. "It felt good that (Shanahan) had enough confidence to give it to me on a goal-line situation with my finger and stuff," Bell said. "It just felt good, helping the team." *************************************************** So, he lost a finger nail & broke a finger in the 1st quarter - which Shanahan obviously knew about - and yet Shanahan trusted M Bell on a 4th & 1 carry to get a 1st down (when he didn't run the ball on 3rd & 1 with Tatum Bell one series earlier) and he trusted M Bell with the ball on the goal line when DEN scored its only TD. I guess that says just a little bit about: 1) How tough M Bell is, 2) How Shanahan feels about M Bell, and 3) Whether he can play with the injury. Hey do any of you all remember the NFL player years ago who broke their finger and their team made it to the playoffs. He wasn't going to be allowed to play because of the break so instead he had the tip of his finger cut off so he could play? I know that isn't a lot of information for you all but that dude was hardcore.

kingfish247
that IS hardcore did that happen in the 1st quarter? so he played 3 quarters, had most of his carries, and caught 3 passes AFTER having his finger broken and his fingernail removed.
