Goop's analysis of the Bears....

In one word that is all too familiar to Bears' fans, "Sweetness" is the word that comes to my mind after the impressive win on Sunday against our rivals, the Packers of Green Bay. After a poor preseason, the Bears looked impressive on all three levels of the game and beat up Favre and the rest of the Packers 26-0. It was the first time that Favre has been shutout in his entire career. Even as a Bears fan, I have mad respect for Brett Favre and what he has done in his quite impressive career. That said, one thing is for sure: the Packers messed up by bringing him back. I'll get more to that later as it's all about the Bears today....

Player of the Game: I hate to say "I told ya so," but I actually did. Rex Grossman was a complete stud, completing 18 of 26 passes for a career-high 262 yards with 1 TD, 1 interception, and a sparking 98.6 passer rating. People, Rex is the real deal. He has all the tools to be a more than solid quarterback in this league but just needs time to prove it. His youth was evident while in the first quarter being pressured by defensive end Aaron Kampman, he lobbed up a ball which was suppose to be for Desmond Clark but instead went to hands of linebacker Nick Barnett. Grossman needs to learn that when there is triple-coverage, it would be smart just to throw it away. 3 points is 3 points Rexy and you have to realize that you have a solid defense backing you up. It looked like Rex learned from that mistake though as on the next drive he threw away a ball when he was under pressure. Other than that, Rex looked poised in the pocket, showing nice zip behind all his passes and solid accuracy. His play fake was working all day and that was evident on the 49 yard TD lob to Bernard Berrian. He also was clutch all day on 3rd down and that is something we as Bears fans haven't seen in a long time. All in all, Rex played a great game and has shut up the critics for a little.

Offense: Enough talking about Sexy Rexy. The wide receivers looked solid all day with Muhsin Muhammad having his first 100 yard game in a Bears uniform. About time right? No matter who the Rex was throwing the ball to, they were snagging it out of the air. Berrian had the one touchdown reception of 49 yards but how about Desmond Clark? The former Demon Deacon caught 5 balls for 77 yards. Lovie has been saying that he wants to get the TE more involved in this offense and it's about frickin' time. The rushing game was a bit of a disappointment though. They didn't really need that much as Rex and the receivers were looking solid. Either way, Thomas Jones needs to have a higher rushing average than 3 yards a cary. Jones ended the day with 21 carries and 63 yards. Benson didn't really do too much either as he rushed 34 yards and 3.1 a carry on 11 carries. The offensive line looked like it was getting a good push all game but Jones couldn't make the one move he needed to so he could break into the open field. Some of the sacks that Grossman endured were a result of Jones not picking up the blocks he needed to. This really doesn't concern me as this has always been a strength of Thomas'.

Defense: Completing one of two shutouts on opening day (the Baltimore Ravens are the other team), the Bears defense did what they needed to do to show critics that this defense hasn't missed a beat after getting torn up by Steve Smith and the Panthers last season in the playoffs. The Bears didn't allow the Packers to advance beyond the Chicago 37-yard line. That in itself is quite an impressive feat. Against a line that featured two rookies, the Bears' pass rush was working to perfection as the Bears had three first half sacks, one each by Lance Briggs, Alex Brown, and rookie Mark Anderson. The pressure also forced Brett Favre to throw two picks in the fourth quarter, one to rookie Danieal Manning and the other to Charles Tillman. The only thing that worried me a little was the rushing defense. The Bears allowed 103 yards on the ground. This is the same defense that allowed an old Jerome Bettis to tear them up for 100 yards in one half. The Bears arguable have the best front seven in the league pass rushing wise, but they need to tighten the holes if they want to have success down the whole. The secondary which many pointed to as a question mark showed that they are loving the Cover-2 scheme. The Bears also displayed their depth with rookie Danieal Manning having a solid game.

Special Teams: Doug Brien who? Paul Edinger who? It's all about Robbie Gould (pronounced Gold; it makes him mad). The former Nittany Lion was perfect on the day hitting four field goals with a long of 40. It's good to know that we have a solid kicking game because a game could easily come down to it. Gould showed poise all day no matter where he was on the field. This kid is the real deal and I don't care if he is wearing McMahon's old number or not, I love him. The Bears also forced a turnover on special teams midway through the second quarter. Adrian Peterson (not the guy from the Sooners; more like Whoppi Goldberg's lovechild) got the force fumble on his stat sheet for the day from former Wildcat Noah Herron. It's all about points off of turnovers and four players later, Gould hit one of his four field goals. Last but not least, how about Devin Hester? This is a guy that I called for the Bears drafting early in the summer and I was ecstatic that they did draft him. The guy is a gamebreaker, simply put. Returning an punt 84 yards jolted a new found source of excitement for Bears fans all over. Hester is the real deal and he will be doing this in this league for a long, long time.

Next Opponent: The Bears return to Chicago for their home opener against the Detroit Lions. The Lions almost pulled off an improbable win against the defending NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks. People, I haven't seen a Detroit Lions team hit that hard and run that fast in a LONG time. Ernie Sims is a freak, nothing less. The Detroit front four has to be put up near the top of the list in the NFL as they were harassing Matt Hasselbeck. This Lions team can play and they are going to be hungry after suffering a heartbreaking loss in the late seconds of the game. Not allowing a touchdown all game by the potent Seattle offense, the Lions still lost to a score of 9-6.

NFC North Watch: I already covered the Lions and we already know what happened to the Cheeseheads of Lambeau Field. The Vikings help kickoff the inagural season of Monday Night Football on ESPN. They will be playing Daniel Synder's loveable Washington Redskins. The Redskins didn't show too much in the preseason, looking just plain awful on offense. That said, look for Brunell to show that he can still play and look for Al Saunders and the rest of the Redskins to show what they are truly made off. Chester Taylor who? The Redskins win an easy one. That means the Bears hopefully will be at the top of the division after one week. Sweetness.

Final Thoughts: In the end, us Bears fans need to remember who we were playing: The Green Bay Packers. This is not a good team and we should have beat up on them. I'm glad to see that we did but the Bears didn't play perfect football. Rex Grossman again needs to improve from each offensive possession and needs to take points when they are available. He will only grow from this game as he is still a young quarterback who needs game experience. The one thing that was lacking from this Bears team was a consistent passing attack and ability to convert on 3rd down; we saw those things in full swing on Sunday. The Bears defense looked dominant but it could be a concern once they face a veteran offensive line and stud running back (Seattle, week 4 anyone?). The Bears also showed that they have a special teams to complement the rest of the game. To all the naysayers out there, this Bears team is for real. I don't want to hear that they aren't a "Super Bowl Contender". This team is as much a contender than any other team out there. Everything is up for a grabs and a win is a win in the NFL. The Bears showed their dominance Sunday and they need to continue that this upcoming Sunday against a solid Detroit Lions team. It's a Bears winner baby, book it.

Bears Watch: 1-0 (1-0 conference, 1-0 division), 1st Place, NFC North

I like your analysis, I 'd drop the "Sexy Rexy" thing - permanently. Also on him, I'd show a little patience and see if he can remain healthy. If he gets hurt again for any length of time, it's time to move on. This is his 4th season, and it wasn't even his tenth start....

This is an obsession with you, PF. If Grossman does get hurt, then we have Griese in place to step in. Grossman's injuries are more likely the result of severe bad luck than fragility.

The one knock I would give the Bears after Sunday is their lack of ability in turning red zone visits into 7 points, not 3 or a turnover. They need to get better at this aspect of the game but some props can be given here to a tired but very determined Packer defense.

Obsession? I consider it facing reality: the dude is fragile. I don't believe in bad luck when it's 3 seperate injuries - it's how he's built. Yes, I see his talent but we're built to win now and I have little loyalty to him and would just as soon see them pull the trigger on Griese. Ideally, this becomes Orton's team after next season once he's had a little more seasoning.

I tend to agree with Ursa here. I think the Bears will be in good shape if something does happen to Grossman as Griese is a good QB. Grossman should only get better with playing time, too. Just a matter of if he can avoid injury.

If I were a Bears fan, I would be a little concerned(again, as Goop and Ursa mentioned) that they werent able to rush for a better average or red zone TD. They will need to improve in that area if they want to beat the better teams.

As a Viking fan, I watched that game with much interest. Unfortunately, the Bears D looks very tough(again) and the offense looks to be improved and will likely be improving more as the season progresses. They are going to be tough games for the Vikes.

As for the Packers, well, I see no need to kick anyone when they are down. So I will just say they have a lot of room for improvement and leave it at that.

Detroilet looks like they might be tough this year, too. If their D can continue to play well and Martz gets that O going, they are not going to be fun for anyone to play this year.

Hoping to see my Vikes look good against a pretty good D that will no doubt be fired up tonight. Should be a good test to see if they can establish anything on the ground and they will need to if they want to win. On D, they should be able to cause problems for Brunell and Co and they might be catching a break with Portis being < 100%. Should be a good game.

Skol Vikings! :D

God bless America!! :D

I think Rex can be a solid quarterback in this league. I don't think he is fragile by any means honestly. He is 100 percent healthy and none of his injuries are recurring ones. I don't want to think of what happens if Grossman gets hurt again. Right now, he is healthy and that is all that matters. Grossman will be fine you guys.

Considering the Bears were bad on scoring points all around last year, this is no doubt an improvement. But by the end of the seaso, if they aren't converting oppurtunities in the red zone into touchdowns, then yeah, we have a major problem.

Isn't more like Rex Glassman?

Regardless, the knock on him isn't that he can compete at this level it's whether or not he can stay healthy. Until he finishes a season upright the jury remains out.

The guy can play so I don't care what nickname he has. Wasn't he the one who was drunk and tripped over his dog or something?

Denver Homers should back me up on this, but that was the "story" when in fact what happened was that he was drunk at a team party, mouthed off and one of his linemen pummeled him. He was not liked by many teammates apparently. :D

Denver folks, was this true?

LOL. "Severe bad luck," my ass. I suppose that it's also "severe bad luck" for the Bears that Favre has never missed a game since playing in Green Bay, huh? :D Grossman's a skirt. He has the talent and brains to be an above-average-to-good NFL QB, but I don't like his chances to stay healthy long enough.

I also disagree that Grossman's was a "stud" yesterday. He only threw one TD against a very bad defense and threw an incredibly stupid interception while being knocked on his ass. Agree more or less with the rest of your analysis.

:D I didn't ask for fashion advice.

Grossman's numbers did not do him justice at all. He was poised all day and making clutch throw after clutch throw. He came up and had a great game. What do you want him to do, throw for 31232819839021839930218 touchdowns? Give him a break.

If you want adults (which is the vast majority of your audience at The Huddle) to take your blog seriously, wearing your hat like B-Rad from "Malibu's Most Wanted" isn't the way to go about it.

No, I expect Grossman to get the ball into the endzone more than ONCE against a freaking horrible Packers defense. And I expect a player in his fourth year to know better than to throw the ball up in the endzone while being knocked to the ground. The best thing that I can say about Grossman yesterday was that he was efficient and limited his mistakes. He was nowhere near a "stud."

Other than that, I mostly agree with the rest of your analysis.

I agree with the stuff you are saying about Grossman and the Bears, but, please drop the ripping on the kid for how he wears his hat. Goopster is a good guy, and I learned a long time ago not to judge someone's fashion style.

Where your hat however you want Goop :D

.....and no Bill, this wasn't an attempt to start a battle with you, just dont' like when things go to a personal level......

That wasn't a personal attack or anything. Just pointing out that dressin' like a gangsta tends to take away from one's intellectual contribution (Goop makes plenty of good points in his blog).

I'd be willing to bet you are older than the average huddler.....and you're so much easy to take seriously especially as you got your name from these guys.

Older than the average Huddler who posts here REGULARLY? I'm not so sure about that. If so, it isn't by much.

If you post a blog on the web that includes your full name, where you live, DOB (which isn't smart, BTW... lots of identity theft predators look through blogs), etc., you're representing yourself and expecting people to take your thoughts seriously. I'm doing no such thing here, so I don't see where the comparison is coming from.

Wow, I didn't know me posting a blog with my picture on it would start a thread about fashion and the proper way to wear a hat. For your info Bill I am as far away from a gangsta as one can be. Just because I wear my hat slightly to the right doesn't mean I am one. And please don't tell me what to do regarding putting what info on my blog or whatever. I appreciate the concern but I like my chances. I've heard enough speeches about internet safety and all.

Thanks for the support Menudo, I appreciate it as always.
