How Bad were the Bucs

They had 142 total net yards on the day. They gave up 123 yards on interception returns, 21 yards on pentalties (not bad), 57 yards on punt returns, and 18 yards on kickoff returns. They were playing at home.

Are they bankrupt? :D

They were bad....but if they beat the Falcons this week all will be forgotten.

Gotta love Gruden though! That guy may be the most intense coach I have ever seen! Love his press conferences!

Chucky forever! :D

This is going to be a very bad year for TB. Gruden & company made a huge mistake by putting all their eggs in Chris Simms' basket. As long as TB doesn't have a legit passing threat - and with Simms they don't, their running game won't be effective. Cadillac Williams isn't a power RB and needs a passing threat to keep the SS out of the box & sniffing in the backfield. And as long as their O isn't effective, the D can't take huge chances - which is what makes them real dangerous - and the D will get worn down by being on the field so long, and they are undersized for that task. The TB team thrives on its speed, not its power, and the passing O is critical in making that team go.

This whole team is going to have a very disappointing year.

The biggest problem was that the Bucs had no rushing game. Caddy had back spasms during the game and was used only once in the second half. The Ravens do have a very good defense and was able to take TB out of their gameplan pretty early which made it all go downhill when Simms was asked to be the savior.

The Bucs were clearly surprised which is a fault of the coaching. BAL has a new offense with McNair there and it was as if TB just had not prepared. Maybe they figured they already had the win and were more interested in this week in Atlanta. While GB and OAK may not improve at all this year, TB certainly will. But they were just underprepared for what happened.

Simms looked good last year mainly because he was able to connect with the ancient Galloway in a maigc year that won't ever happen again. Take away Galloway and have Caddy sputter and 27-0 is what happens.

Why exactly are they so much worse on offense this season - with Simms - when they seemed to do pretty well with him last season? It is only one week, and Baltimore's defense is awfully good again.

Just asking, I don't know.

I don't mean to be demeaning, so please don't take it that way.

It was easy to see this coming. Last year, in Simms first 3 starts, against SF, CAR, & WAS, Simms averaged 267 yds passing per game and had 5 passing TDs vs 4 INTs in those 3 games. In the next 7 games, Simms averaged 166 passing yards per game - that's right, over 100 yards per game less than his first 3 games, and had 5 TDs vs 3 INTs in those 7 games. Yep - he dropped by over 100 yards per game passing and threw as many TDs in his first 3 starts as he did in his last 7 starts.

In short, the NFL got the book on him. They studied his strengths & weaknesses and now are abusing his weaknesses while taking away what few strengths he has. That started in the second half of the season last year and is continuing right into this year.

Why Simms was such a darling I don't know. I know he is Phil Simm's son, but this is also a guy who couldn't outplay Major Applewhite at Texas, and Texas was loaded with talent, and everyone knew that while Applewhite was a better QB than Simms, they also knew that Applewhite would never play in the NFL. To put it plainly, Simms has marginal NFL talent at best.

Edited to add: yards per pass attempt is usually a pretty good quick-&-dirty measure of how effective a QB is.

The top 6 QBs measured by ypa:

Ben Roethlisberger PIT 8.90

Peyton Manning IND 8.27

Marc Bulger STL 8.00

Trent Green KC 7.92

Jake Delhomme CAR 7.86

Tom Brady NE 7.75

That's a pretty strong list. Now, when you look at Simms' ypa for the last 7 games of last year, his ypa is just under 5.88. Of the 54 NFL QBs with at least 50 passing attempts, Simms' rank for the last 7 games would have been #44, and as far as regular starters, he ranked only ahead of JP Losman's 5.877 in ypa with a 5.879.

Look for them to rebound this week.

Or not. :D

Bronco Billy, thanks for the numbers on Simms. Another thing that people are forgetting about Simms is that he wasn't the quarterback until week 7. He got to take over a team that already had a 5-1 record, and the defense carried them through a lot of the late-season games. The Falcons are going to manhandle the Bucs O-Line and keep Simms on his back or running scared all day long. Week 1 will turn out to be a microcosm of the Bucs entire season.

Those Bucs sure like to ride coattails. First Chucky takes a solid team from Dungy, and then Simms takes over a 5-1 team. That's plenty of inherited success right there.

Well, let's already count out all the teams for the season that sucked Sunday.

Seattle won, but were horrible in doing so

Carolina got crushed (at home)

Tampa Bay got crushed (at home)

and Dallas is out, because of their loss.

Poor QB play in Carolina, TB, and Dallas. We are all blowing the TB blowout out of proportion.

Dallas - Bledsoe - hadn't played with T.O. but targeted him a lot and missed him quite a bit.

Carolina - Delhomme - Without his star WR, and his next WR, Keyshawn, has only been there one offseason.

TB - Simms - First time he has started a regular season, wasn't used to it. He started last year and played, but he was thrust into the game. Let's not forget he did pretty well in the playoffs against a stout Washington defense.

We are reading TOO MUCH into week one. Baltimore, Atlanta, and Jax have some stout defenses with dominating players.

Seattle, well their o-line just sucked.

We need to revisit this weeks later, instead of saying I told you so...one week into the season.

I like it that you guys are all excited. Get your hopes up, and then stomp on your hearts like usual. I miss the Ravens rivlary. Bengals fans are too nice.

Oh, we're looking forward to it. By then, the division race should almost be locked up, so any hope you have will fade after the game.
