Roy Williams predicts win against Bears

Oh Roy... gotta love the attitude at least. :D

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions WR Roy Williams vowed to win the Week 2 game. He later backed off and said, "I'm just saying, we're going to go out there and play the way that we're supposed to play, and when we play the way we're supposed to play, we're supposed to win. And that's what I'm saying, that we're supposed to win."

Then today,

It shouldn't be shocking that a player thinks his team will win, but this will surely be blown out of proportion. "We will win this game," Williams said. "Y'all can take that as a guarantee or what not, but we will win this game. You can take that as a guarantee if you want."

Didn't the Lions get demolished by the Bears last year ...twice :D

Is this the team that put up a whopping 6 points at home? And now they are going on the road to play an even better D than the one they just saw? Did he say why he thinks professional point spread assessors made CHI an 8 pt favorite?

This guarantee crap is getting old....

Lions look like they're moving in the right direction. Holding Seattle to only 9 points? Only losing by 3, while allowing SA to only rush for 50 yds?

+1

The Lions were not the only team to suffer on offense during week 1. Most teams will adjust where needed, and I believe the Lions do indeed have a chance to win this one. What a huge upset that would be too! :D

You missed what might be The Quote of the Year, which might not be topped in the next 5 months:

"It was stupid how close we were to putting 40 points on the board," Williams said.

What's even worse for me is that I have both Roy Williams and Kevin Jones on my team. I have enough depth at WR where I could probably start someone else instead of Roy, but my only other options over Kevin Jones at this point is Brandon Jacobs (who might not be such a bad option later down the road), and Derrick Blaylock (who is on the NYJ, a team in much worse a situation than the Lions).

I did you one better ... I have Roy, KJ and Kitna on one of my teams! What was I thinking! :D

At least I some other options for starters. :D

Is this the team that held Seattle to a piddly 9 points at home? And now they are goin gon the road to play a worse O then the one they just saw.

I think Williams is nuts for making this "guarantee", but I'm going to hold judgement on this game. I think it's going to be closer then people think. Chicago isn't exactly a offensive powerhouse. They have a decent running game but only 1 wide receiver worth anything. Contain him and control the run and I think you are going to limit them to field goals. As long as you can limit errors resulting in turnovers, I think Detriot has a chance.

They may not win outright, but I would take 8 and go with Detriot. Remember the point spread is not what the odds makers thin the difference in scores is going to be, but rather what it takes to get people to bet on the underdog. If no one is bitting at some level, they raise it. If too many people bite, they lower it.

Well said. Grossman had a good game but it was one game against the Packers. Detriot's D is a lot better than the Packer's. Also, the Bears offense could not put the ball in the end zone from the red zone. I'm a little worried that the Bears are going to have a problem moving the ball.

That being said. Kitna did not look good to me and Detriots offense is going to struggle too. The Bears D is too good. Roy was an idot for giving the Bears bulletin board material.

The Bears will win but I think it will be closer than the 8 points the line is at right now.

Fantasy-wise, I'd be fine with a loss as long as Kevin Jones and Roy Williams do well. But you have to admit the idea of the Lions actually beating the Bears is intriguing. I am skeptical this can be done, but if the Lions do pull out a win I'd be pretty excited for them. :D

Soldier Field, Bears Defense....DA BEARS! :D

Thanks Roy! The Bears needed some billboard material - as a Bear Fan I don't want them to get complacent. :D

Roy,

Your 2005 stats:

Player No Yds Avg Long TD

Roy Williams 45 687 15.3 51 8

Team Record--5-11

Wins vs. CLE, GB, BAL, NO, ARI

Please don't make any predictions about winning. Ever. In your life.

Sincerely,

Rational Thought

I love it when players guarantee wins. It doesn't bother me at all. I think more should do it. Throw yourself out on a limb, and take your lumps if you were wrong.

I like last year on Sirius when Steve Smith was being interviewed. The next game was the Pats coming to town, and he was talking about the CB who spit on him (i forget his name) and Smitty said "this is sirius right? I'm gonna whip his ass."

I want more players to talk sh!t to each other. then settle it on the field.

I applaud R. Williams for this. He obviously ate his wheaties. This is not going to be a easy match up (hell, they stand almost no chance) but if they win..he'll look alot smarter won't he?

I actually think my Lions will be bet heavier than the Bears this week.

You figure with all the Martz hoopla and only losing by 3 to the Conference champs and then getting 8 PTs against a Bear team that does not have the highest scoring of offenses.I think my Lions will be on the betters side.

Only bad thing about that is Teams on the betters side don't cover more than they do.

I would not touch this game with a 1000 foot pole as far as betting.

He will never look smart IMO, but if they lose, no one will care that he made the prediction because he is a third rate receiver who never lived up to the hype that came with his drafting. If they win, he can smile and say, "I called it". Sadly, I predict he has no bearing on the game whatsoever, so his calling the win is nothing more that an attempt to draw up some kind of enthusiasm.

I think every player should predict that his team will win, but "guarantees" are stupid. Unless a player is going to personally reimburse every fan for their ticket, parking, and even their time spent in front of the TV, he's not really "guaranteeing" anything.
