Randall Posted September 25, 2006 Share Posted September 25, 2006 He doesn't stink. I see the Bears switching to more of a running team if nothing else to run out leads in games. They have a lot invested in Benson and he should start later in the season. That is if he can start working, gain his teammates trust and if the Bears can start run blocking. He will be the starter at some point and probably will not produce much until he can have 15+ touches a game. He is the kind of back that needs 20+ touches, and he can really wear a defense down. It is doubtful that he will break many long runs (20 yards or more) but if given the chance I think he can get 4.4-4.6 ypc pretty easily. He averaged over 6 in college. His longest run was 17 yards. Jones also caught three passes for 11 yards. Jones has rushed for 181 yards on 60 carries this season. The Vikings' frenzy of blitzing QB Rex Grossman helped keep RB Cedric Benson on the bench in favor of Thomas' blocking prowess. So Benson spent the afternoon watching from the sideline, mostly with his helmet off. Benson appeared a bit down, even though he received words of encouragement from receivers coach Darryl Drake and team chaplain Harry Swayne, who hugged Benson and offered encouragement. HC Lovie Smith also found Benson and talked to him. "He just said we had a good game, and we did," Benson said. "You want to play, naturally, but I see the other side of this too." Neither has shown anything though and if Benson starts to break off a couple, we will be back to square one of the argument. Â Â Because it just barely worked agains the Vikings and because it's not going to work at all against teams like Seattle, Atlanta, and Philly. They might as well give Benson a shot, because the Bears need to be able to control the clock to beat the elite NFC teams. His sense of entitlement last year after a holdout has probably grown after he blessed the organization with his presence at off season workouts and camp. Being a top pick and making a lot of money, doesn't make you a great football player. The burden of proof is squarely on Benson to prove he can be a team player, and judging from his opportunities to produce, he's not convincing the coaching staff he's the guy. Â Â They spent $40 million on a tailback they won't give game experience to and instead give it to the guy that feels he is woefully underpaid and that will no doubt make a push to leave the team yet again next year when he is not compensated anywhere near what the bench guy is making. Â How can Benson improve without actual game time? The notion that he is just not as good as pass blocker is interesting because exactly how is he ever going to get better if he never plays? And besides, he's been in the system for over a year now. The whole pass blocking issue doesn't exist for any other rookie RB from last year, why is it here? I find it hard to believe that Samkon Gado, Carnell Williams, Frank Gore, Ronnie Brown, etc. all came into the league and were given a heavy load despite being less experienced than Benson. Â It seems to me either they are giving up on Benson or they are mismanaging their backfield. I suppose either could be true, but after over a year on the team and plenty of practice time plus a whole offseason, it's hard to believe they are not giving up on Benson. If they haven't, I strongly think they are mismanaging things. Benson is not a relief runner in style and he has a total of 88 carries over the last 20 games the Bears have played (Benson of course missed several games last year with the knee sprain). So in a year's time, he's had about the equivalent of three or four normal workload games for a running back stretched out over 14 games. Â Another example of why the NFL draft is such a crap-shoot. Â Benson is a good example of why I disagree with people who think they're team should throw games in order to get a better draft pick. Â I'd rather win 6 games, finish in the middle of the pack, and have a chance to attract a decent free agent with a proven track record than fininsh 3-13, get a top 5 pick and take a chance on some 21 year old head-case like Benson. If Benson pissed off his teammates enough that they ratted him out to the press back in August, it's likely that the coaching staff isn't happy with him either.
