MNF IS DYING

The Misfit.

That was an excellent response and laced in lucid truth. Thing is, I believe you and I are talking about two different animals.

On one hand I am talking about how MNF just isn't as "demanded" by the buying public because we are saturated with highlight shows, get 18 hours straight football on Sunday, and easy access to any game we want to see.

You bring up the topic of commercialism, which I wasn't really thinking about in light of the original point to the thread.

On the topic of commercialism you can't be more right. Everything is for sale...stadiums, uniforms, names, access. Money is the name of the game in of our age and sports is an enterprise so it stands to reason sports would be lead by money (Kudos to the Bears for turning down corporate naming rights of Soldier Filed).

The commercialism inherent in sports bothers me as well, but what can you do? It works. Companies spending millions on a 30 second spot is worth it to the companies or they would not do it, so it’s going nowhere for the foreseeable future. I honestly believe that is a discussion unto itself and may not be WHY Monday Night Football is no longer as popular. The original poster had some comments on WHY MNF was dying and while some of his comments he (and you) made are accurate, I suggest they aren't the only reason why popularity of MNF has been on decline.

It may be a stupid analogy, but very few of us use horse and buggies anymore, because there are other alternatives to transportation. Fewer of us are enjoying Monday Night Football these days for reasons, I think, other than the Bud commercials.

You will find no one more skeptical of corporate involvement in ANYTHING as I, but I think the issues of MNF go deeper than that.

1. They have interviews with people who nobody cares about DURING THE GAME. Then they go to the sideline stewardesses for what........I don't know? I have read everything they say on the huddle and espn already. And they're not even cute!

Who was the unimportant interview they had last night, some dude from Desperate Housewives? 99 out of 100 people who watch MNF don't give a crap about Desperate Housewives, especially if the character from the show being interviewed is male. If they are going to interview anyone from DH, it A. needs to be female and B. she needs to be wearing a two piece string bikini, if not anything.

Sideline Stewardesses... That's an accurate analogy because have you ever noticed when flying that ALL stewardesses look like they were once hot but aren't anymore? Like they spent too much time in the air or something? Kolber is barely so-so... TaFoya needs to be taken out to pasture... Espn needs to bring in some hot fresh talent to read off the teleprompter that Coaches want positive turnover numbers rather than negative. And they need to wear two piece string bikinis, if not anything.

Actually, this is not true. While I don't like the interview either anyone around when MNF was a national event (1970s) will know that interviews have always been a part of MNF in the past.

This is what helped make the game so special, that they intertwined nationally known people with the game. It was NEVER just a football game, it was an event, a uniquely American event and now people are taking pot shots because they have too much superflous stuff, when all along the superflous was there.

I would suggest one issue with MNF now is that we have access to every game, a multitude of highlights, and games on Sunday night. By Monday Night you're kinda worn down a bit.

Back in the day, I got to watch two total games (one at 1 and one at 4) and 1 was usually one I didn't care about. Highlight shows were minimalistic back then and one of my favorite moments of MNF football back in the 1970s and 1980s was the half-time highlight show.

I don't think the games are necessarily any better either, although I have done no research and it was much easier to predict the good teams back in the 1970s (no free agency, limited roster turnoever). So the game has gone away a bit because I think our culture has selected against MNF, for some of the reasons I have said and for others I don't have a finger on.

Don't get me wrong, I love football and I am critical of azzclown announcers as anyone and YES I long for MY MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL where my dad and I would get our pizzas together and have 3 hours of football bliss, but times do change and I believe the people at ABC who gave up Monday Night football understood that the market has changed. MNF will continue to be a good draw, but anyone who honestly believes we'll EVER have the magic of the 1970s MNF back is sadly mistaken (this coming from someone who adores 1970s football)

NBC can select those games, but FOX and CBS can select a limited number of games beforehand to protect from moving to SNF.

As in missing the ball right?

Maybe that's why the greatest reciever of all time doesn't have any endorsements.

wiff as in inability to say the word "with" he has changed that word, and any other word that contains the letters t and h. I dont care what this guy did on the field, if he can't speak, he shouldnt be on the radio.

No, thanks.

:D I'm sorry, wrong answer. Erin Andrews is more attractive than anyone MNF has right now and she knows her stuff. She gets interviewed on ESPN Radio 1000 Chicago weekly and she comes on and sounds hot and can hold her ground against the guys. Point Erin Andrews.

MNF is being ruined by the crews and the producers. ESPN of all networks should know better.

LMAO and you can't be serious. ESPN has been all about being that goofball sitcom mentality from the start. Where have you been about the last 20 yrs? Can't imagine why any of what you said would be even a mild suprise. The only really surprising thing is how many people still watch.

More shots of busty cheerleaders will work too

Yup, but without the corporate slogans superimposed over them...maybe they can just put the slogans on the front of their tops...? Of course, I might get dizzy from my eyeballs moving up and down so fast.

I agree with you in part. But when it comes to football they have done a pretty good job with NFL Primetime and player news. I used to watch sports machine. You are right though, they do go overboard trying to duplicate Boom who is the original football cliché artist. If I hear "cool as the other side of th pillow" one more time I'm gonna fork that eye with a cannon like in Pirates of the Caribbean.

I'm sorry but you can't have a guy with the last name of Kornheiser in the booth during Football. You just know you think of Kornholer every time. We're guys and you have to have guy names in a booth for football. Madden, Fouts, Cosell, Summerall, Buck, Aikman but not Kornholer. I mean please.

I could even tolerate their interviews (not so veiled advertisements for other shows on their networks) if they could find a way to do so without totally ignoring the game action. That's my biggest beef with the current setup... they go on and on with their unbearbale conversations while I'm sitting there wondering about the details concerning the action on the field. That's nothing less than a complete failure on their part to actually cover the game that they are there to cover.

Totally agree. Absolute disregard for the game burns me up.

I like Tony, but it looks like the announcers have to throw in BS about upcoming shows that air by their network. I agree, too much is missed when they do these interviews. For example, who cares to hear about the show, "Desperate Housewives" when there's something happening on the field. :D

The booth crew is definitely part of the issue… you will never be able to duplicate the knowledge, wit, and unintentional comedy of Howard, Dandy Don, Frank Gifford, Alex Karras, OJ, etc.

The sideline stuff, meh. I don’t hate it, I don’t love it. Its mildly annoying – but I would agree the hotness factor needs to be addressed!

The biggest issue as to why MNF will not recapture its magic is pretty obvious – the league has changed. In the 70’s and 80’s you had big bad teams you either loved or hated year after year. The Steelers, Raiders, Dolphins, Cowboys, Redskins… Bill Simmons wrote about this a few years back. The NFL was at its zenith then. The good teams were like gangs… they just went around beating up the rest of the league and people couldn’t wait to root for them or against them. And ABC cashed in.

No team in the league raises that kind of passion anymore…

I beg to differ. Haven't you been paying attention. I would hit Swammi over the head with a stick if I saw him at the game pulling for the Eagles, and after with a bat because they beat us. Then after a week we may share a beer or two, make up, and do it all over again next time we meet on the field.

If you asked Bonehand, Front Row, Seahawks37 and 21, Timmypg, soupanuts, I'm sure they would tell you the same when Dallas comes to town.

Passion is not the problem. It's the damn counselors on the commercials trying to tell us we can't get it up anymore, or we should tape the game to spoon in the bedroom or we should have a comedy routine in the booth.

Passion is there, it's just not in the booth!

See my sig line, need I say more!

MNF IS DYING? I think not. I don't have information on statistics for this past week but:

The Saints-Falcons game, the third Monday Night Football broadcast of the 2006 season, was watched in 10,850,000 homes, garnering an 11.8 rating. It was the third time in three weeks that Monday Night Football set such a high-water mark and the second time the network won the night in primetime. ESPN also was No. 1 among prime-time viewing on MNF's opener Sept. 11.

The Saints' 23-3 victory over Atlanta in a matchup of previously 2-0 teams was viewed by the second-largest audience in the history of cable television. It was also the first time ESPN has delivered an average of more than 10 million homes for a telecast.
