detlef
One of my reps brought the Robert Criag GM by today for lunch. Gotta say, that's some dammed impressive juice. The Chard is fat but with no malo and not a ton of oak. Good acid and intense fruit. The 02 Syrah was very nice. Certainly new world fruit but again, not a lot of oak so it had a refinement to it. The absolute star of the lineup was the 03 Affinity Cab. This vineyard was originally used for Phelps Insignia and did not suffer from the same crazy heat that plagued the valley fruit in 03. Borderline unpaid friendty with rich jammy fruit, seductive nuance, and nice balance. It should cost about $40 or so in stores and blows doors on half the CA Cabs I've had for a while (including the Juslyn that I heralded the other day, as much as I loved that stuff). Especially if you want to be able to open it up soon. The guys told me it was tasting much better than it had early in the day which, of course tells me that it wouldn't hurt to put it down for a little bit. The Howell Mtn and Mt Veeder Cabs were both quite impressive indeed but at nearly twice the price... I just couldn't get over the Affinity.
