Hunter
My main league has been running for close to 10 years now with part of that being a keeper league. In this league we allow the trading of draft picks in the next year's draft in order to allow the weaker teams to sell of marginal players and get some assistance in future years to improve their team. Generally the stronger teams buy players at the end of the year and the weaker teams sell off. This is reasonable to start with, but...over time this seems to have degraded trading in our league. The fact is that we have all learned that the earlier that we sell our team off, the better chance we have of getting good draft picks for next year. We are contemplating making changes. Understand that this is a generally happy group of friends that have played together for years. We are not having any major satisfaction issues here. A few are thinking that the league could be more equitable to all and allow the teams that are strong team managers and drafters to win. I would really appreciate hearing your opinions on how your league handles the trading of draft picks. How many leagues do this? Does it work for your league? We are also contemplating shifting away from being a keeper to a complete redraft league. This gives everyone the same chance to win every year (assuming that all are simliar in fantasy football abilities). Let me hear your thoughts...please. Junkyard
I'm in a keeper league that allows you to keep 3 players. Long standing group of guys, but it has only been a keeper league for the past 3 years. We do allow the trading of draft picks, but it seems (from my perspective) that teams just don't place enough emphasis on just how valuable a draft pick can be. Too often lopsided trades go through simply because of ignorance, which of course doesn't fall under the collusion category. We also allow the trading of "keeper" slots, which I am not a big fan of. Again, not enough value is placed on a keeper slot. And quite often, it's the team willing to sacrifice NEXT YEAR to simply make the playoffs this year that makes the questionable move. To try and combat this, we did vote last year to limit teams to just one extra first round pick and one extra keeper acquired via trades, but personally I don't think it's enough. I guess it's still a little work in progress right now. Hope that helps a little.
Pillsbury
I'm in a keeper league here, similar to yours. Keep up to 3 players every year, and yes teams trade off some players towards the end for picks in next years draft. We haven't yet had a problem where too many teams were too early dumping their players for next year picks. It's been very competitve, and most owners understand the value of draft picks. Just a quick thought that came to mind that may help if you keep it a keeper league. Do a sort of reverse trading deadline. Teams are not allowed to trade players for next years picks until a minimum of week 8, for instance. Anyways, hope it helps.
