I, like many of you, took CJ as my #1 WR and am STILL waiting for him to get more then 100 yards for the 1st time. At what point in the season do we all say "this isnt CJs year. It is Housh's", and then that leads to next year. What would CJs value be after this year should he become the #2 guy? Im not asking for advice, just input on the subject. Posted October 18, 2006 Share Posted October 18, 2006 I made the mistake/fortune of getting both CJ and Housh (CJ was my 2nd pick at 2.1) and I traded Lundy and Edwards for Housh after week 1. I think of Housh as a #1 at the moment. He is more consistent andn top of that he's been scoring TDs consistently this year. Chad has moved down to my #2/#3 slot. But I don't think you can sit Chad. I drafted him, as I'm sure many did, for his playmaking abilities. I have to think after the loss to NE, a bye, and a loss to TB that the patience is wearing thin in Cincy. If Chad doesn't go off this week, and the offense doesn't start playing with more fire, then I think it will be time to trade Chad as his schedule doesn't let up the rest of the way. Well I didnt say anything because I didnt want it to seem like an advice thread. My plan is to wait this LAST week, and then trade him to someone else. Ill get his worth or Ill keep him because I know as soon as I trade him he'll catch fire. IMO, his worth is someone who catches a few balls a game at this point. Reggie Williams and Lee Evans (both on my team) have out scored him almost every week this year. Id want a RB though, so Im hoping to get a decent RB2 for him if thats what I decide. I told him I think he is a player the owner should have held on to because in 2004, I had Chad Johnson and through 5 games he had... 23 catches for 334 yards and 1 td. (also 0 games over 100 yards) Now I dont know what week I traded him, but I finally had enough of his #3 WR #s and got rid of him for him to finish the last 11 games with... 72 catches 940 yards and 8 tds So far this year CJ has... 24 catches 300 yards and 1 td. (0 games over 100 yards) So I see a huge similarity so far between 2004 adn 2006 for CJ. Looking at Game #6 of 2004, this week CJ should be good for 140+ and 1 td. I can recall 2 or 3 times where he was seen dramatically unbuckling his chin strap with both hands and talking to Carson on the sideline. It starts with the offensive line -- sacks of Palmer went way up after C Rich Braham went down in the second game, and there's still no word on if and when he'll be back (even more troubling is that it could be his last season, anyway). Left tackle Levi Jones will be out again this week. Palmer has definitely not been enjoying the same pocket protection he had last year, his throws are rushed, and you can tell he's pretty frustrated himself at not being able to break the big play like they could last year. But it's just not the line. Chris Perry was a key pass-catching threat on third down, and he's been gone. Chris Henry is also a key guy, especially on third down, because he can run deep and pull coverage away from CJ. Tab Perry was often used as a blocking WR/TE role for third downs, and he's been out. In the last two games, the Bengals have converted on just 5 of 25 3rd down opportunities. That's a pretty telling stat on why CJ is not putting up numbers. CJ has actually been showing a lot of maturity this year -- he's not complaining about not getting the ball (he even declined to lady dog when talking to Jim Rome, simply saying he figured he was "two TD celebrations behind schedule") and he's been extremely quiet in the media. I think he understands the deal, and his time will come. The line protection will get better, Chris Perry is back in practice this week, Henry's suspension ends next week (and hopefully he won't have another one to worry about this season). One more point: The Bengals have lost their first game after the bye for the last three years. For whatever reason, they come out flat for that first game, but then explode. I'm not predicting they'll do that this week -- they are still hurting, and Carolina could be relentless with whatever line they patch together -- but the following week, if Henry and both Perrys are back, things could start to change and the old CJ should begin to emerge. I guess my point is CJ is still the go-to guy -- even TJ will tell you that -- injuries and Henry's suspension have hurt the team as well as CJ's opportunities, and history and the return of players -- as well as CJ's increased maturity -- are on the side of CJ still getting on track for a good season. Mostly, Palmer needs a little more time and CJ needs a little help from returning skill players drawing more coverage. He just didn't make paydirt. I have CJ and am just stashing him away on the bench for his inevitable breakout. Reggie Brown and Torry Holt can cover me in the time being. CJ cannot handle the double coverage. Its obvious. He has even "dared" teams to match up with him one on one.....(yeah that will work). I think that CJ is growing very frustrated and he wants the ball no matter what. I remember he stated earlier in the year that he did not care about numbers, he just wanted to win. I'm not gonna say that Holt isn't a great WR. He obviously is. But St. Louis's schedule has been much softer than Cincinnati's. Holt's faced SF, Detroit, GB, and Arizona so far. Capt. Stanky Posted October 20, 2006 Share Posted October 20, 2006 (edited) After watching the game last week it was very apparent that CP and CJ's timing is way off. I think this is a direct corilation to the protection problems. CP is being forced to throw the ball earlier than he'd like. CJ runs more deep routes while TJ runs the underneath stuff. Obviously with the injurys to the o-line the underneath routes are easier to complete. TJ has also show a better ability at going up and fighting for the ball on deep passes. I think the Bengals are going to make a concious effort to get CJ the ball more early on this week. I think you'll see a few flanker screens as well as some hitches and comebacks to take advantage of the coushin Chad's usually given. Bottom line is that you can't trade Chad now.
