Portis and Saunders

I think Portis will start getting more carries, but I was surprised to see that he only had 14 carries last week. Anyone have ideas on why Portis was kept out of the game plan last week (I didnt' watch that game).

Saunder's comment that he's getting used to Portis as a player seemed odd to me, as it's been out for a while now that Portis is a strong RB and his offense relied heavily on that position in KC.

From Yahoo:

Ryan O'Halloran, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis admits he expected to play a larger role in the club's new offensive system. "I have to adapt to his game plan," Portis said of offensive coordinator Al Saunders. "The game plan isn't just suited to me. It's a team effort and it's about spreading the ball around and getting the touches to all of the play makers. Right now, I haven't been getting the carries I expected to get, but it'll come." Likewise, Saunders is still getting accustomed to having a player like Portis in his backfield. "It's an ongoing thing," Saunders said. "linton missed training camp, has been in and out of the lineup the first several games. I'm just starting to get the feel for him."

a comment like that is puzzling to me as well.

but the fact remains... when Clinton gets 20-25 carries, he's a beast and the 'Skins are likely to win.

that should be page 1 in that 700 page playbook, not end around with Santana Moss and Randle El.

i don't even remember a lot of that when Saunders was in KC. i remember a few end arounds to D.Hall but that's about it.

Bejebus, Saunders sounds like Shell here. :D

More like Emperor Palpatine from The Empire Strikes Back:

Vader: "I have felt him, Master."

Emperor: "Strange that I have not."

From KFFL's Week 7 Locker Room Buzz

Last week, many were surprised to see the Redskins' top weapon, running back Clinton Portis, with only 14 rushing attempts. He managed a solid 4.1 yards per carry and had 58 rushing yards with 17 receiving. The reason for the low numbers is partly because he's not on the field on third downs as the team is trying to protect him a bit. He had seven carries in each half and had four first-down runs.

Portis also takes himself out of the game more than the team would like but as the season goes on this should change and he'll see more action. He's also not much of a receiving threat right now. Several screens are going to his backup Ladell Betts. If you can, you should trade for Portis if possible and if you own him don't let him go yet.

:D

i dunno about this info but Portis is pretty involved in the passing game... he has less catches than Betts (11 catches to Betts' 18) but Portis has almost a 5yd edge per catch.
