A little wine help please...

We're having the 2nd Annual Squeegiebo Halloween party next weekend. Not being wine drinkers ourselves, we didn't buy any last year, and realize now that was a mistake. So, in addition to the beer selections, vodka, rum, Kahlua, and mixers, I want to have a few wine choices for my guests.

There will be at most 30 people at the party, and probably more than half won't be drinking any wine. But I want to have a couple reds and whites for those who may wish to.

What would you suggest?

My brother's woman is a riesling fan, and I know what kind she likes, so that's one.

I was thinking of getting 3 other bottles: a zinfendel, a merlot, and a chardonnay. If that's not a good idea, please tell me what others I should get. Not looking to impress anyone with expensive wine, but I don't want something lousy.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

A zin, merlot, and chard are fine enough choices indeed. As far as the chard and merlot are concerned, you can get some pretty nice juice on the cheap from Argentina. Honestly, it's pretty easy pickings as I have yet to try much from there that I found bad. If you go to a reasonably nice store, they're likely to have a good one for less than $10 a bottle. As for zin, skip the Ravenswood Vintners blend and go for the Renwood Sierra Series. It's typically about the same price and much better. If you can't find either...

Honestly, it's really hard giving wine recs to people in other regions because you have no idea what they can find there. My standard go-to rec is to find a nice wine shop and put yourself in their hands. Any store that's not over the top pretentious will always have a few nice choices for those who aren't wine geeks and don't want to pay mad jack. They get your question dozens of times per week and will happily guide you into some nice crowd pleasers for $10 or less.

Thanks for the tips. :D

But, around here there aren't too many choices as far as different stores, as we're still one of those states that still makes you buy wine only in the wines & spirits stores. :D

That really sucks. We have ABC stores for booze, but at least can buy the grape in stores.
