Redskins report: Portis could miss a month with broken hand

PHILADELPHIA - The Redskins won't have Clinton Portis for as much as a month after the star running back broke his right hand in Washington's 27-3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Portis will have a couple of screws inserted in the knuckle of his right ring finger for "stability," perhaps as early as today. Director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer indicated that it will take at least three weeks before the team's leading rusher can return, possibly longer.

"He's got to be able to use his hand," Tyer said. "He's got to be able to secure the football."

Portis appeared to suffer the injury late in the first quarter with Washington already trailing by 10-0. Mark Brunell's screen pass for Santana Moss fell incomplete, but there was some question about whether it was a pass or a lateral. Portis dove into a pile of bodies from both teams and, after it was ruled incomplete, he went back to the huddle clearly favoring his right arm.

He carried for 9 yards on the next play then came off the field and was replaced by Ladell Betts, who finished with 83 yards on 20 rushes.

Portis was unavailable for comment after the game.

The injury was Portis' third of the season, following a separated shoulder suffered in the opening preseason game and a more recent mild high-ankle sprain.

In addition to Betts, running back T.J. Duckett saw his first action since Washington's loss at Dallas on Sept. 17. He rushed twice for 16 yards.

I'm sick to my stomach over this. I rejected a trade offer this morning of Steve Smith for Portis.

Then I got to watch both Portis and Gore leave the field injured. There go my two top backs and I'm sitting on a one game lead in my division. If I would have taken the trade I would have had Gore, Alexander/Morris, and Lundy to choose from, but also had Smith to buffer the loss. I was just too chickensh*t to give away my #1 back.

I thought Romanowski retired??? :bash:

Here's to Romo and the entire Raiders org..... :D

:D

Romo will always be dirty, however his dirty days were as a Bronco, not a Raider.

He took byotch shots at rookies on his own team as a Raider.
