Bill - is there any possibility that the Bears would trade Benson away to get rid of his contract, give Jones a raise and keep him, using Peterson as #2? DMD
Jones is actually signed through 2007 though not sure how that contract is structured. If he continues as is, then a holdout is a foregone conclusion and yet Jones wouldn't still be happy if he is traded with the same contract to another team. Either the Bears would have to re-sign him to something that makes him happy or they would trade him and the receiving team would re-do it. I imagine Jones is and would be only making about $2 million a year - awfully low for a starting tailback. Maybe the lowest in the league? That's why I was thinking they could trade Benson and use those freed up $$$ to resign Jones. Not sure how this would affect their cap and so on but it might make more sense to keep Jones and let Benson go elsewhere.

It's possible, but I doubt it. (1) Benson has a big contract, doesn't appear to be as good as his contract suggests, has alienated teammates with is bad attitude, and has had some injury issues already. He's going to be difficult to move. (2) Jones will be 29 next year and has a long history of injuries. (3) Angelo is an egomaniac who probably doesn't want to admit that drafting Benson was a mistake. FWIW "5 years, $35 million ($18 million guaranteed)".
Ursa Majoris
I like that idea, but wasn't Benson's contract front loaded? FWIW "5 years, $35 million ($18 million guaranteed)". With part of the front loading already gone, it might make his contract more attractive to other teams..... I guess I'm grasping at straws here because I have this evil vision of the Bears being stuck with no top RB at all in 2007.

Bill Swerski
With part of the front loading already gone, it might make his contract more attractive to other teams..... Possibly, but the Bears would also take a huge cap hit. IIRC, the $18 million signing bonus is prorated evenly throughout those 5 years and the Bears would take on all of the remaining 10.8 million in '07. Ursa Majoris
Possibly, but the Bears would also take a huge cap hit. IIRC, the $18 million signing bonus is prorated evenly throughout those 5 years. Dead right - I wonder if they'll still take that hit though? Anyway, I guess all this does is further cement the common sense that caving in to a rookie holdout gets you burned. I'd have made him re-enter the next years draft before I signed the POS. DMD
Possibly, but the Bears would also take a huge cap hit. IIRC, the $18 million signing bonus is prorated evenly throughout those 5 years. No doubt the signing bonus is prorated out and adds $3.6 million to each successive year. If they were to trade Benson, they would have to payoff the unrealized part of the signing bonus which would be like taking an additional cap hit of over $10 million. The Angry Pirate
Maybe Benson will start hanging out with with another unproductive, huge salary - no production, media darling...Ricky Williams. The two can bash on their teams, smoke a little, eat a little and then get tested and suspended for a year. Then the Bears could just retain Thomas and us Chicagoians and the Bears can focus soley on the things that matter....like defending our XLI Super Bowl title. Easy n Dirty
IIRC, the cap hit would be 10.8 million next year. I don't see them taking it. Isn't there a provision where if they trade him after a certain date (June 1 maybe?), then they'd just take the $3.6m in 2007, with the balance in 2008? Even if that's correct, the $7.2m hit lurking in 2008 is pretty daunting.
Wolverines Fan
(3) Angelo is an egomaniac who probably doesn't want to admit that drafting Benson was a mistake. Angelo's track record with first round picks has been horrible. The only unquestioned good one he has made was DT Tommie Harris, but I guess the jury is still out with Grossman. And I agree that they won't even take the $7.2 million cap hit, especially when they're talented enough to make a run at the SB.
