Carolina and the NFC South: muddy waters indeed

Okay, last week I slammed CAR for their win over TB. I stand by my statements from before, but this week, I'm happier. Not much, but happier none the less.

Points of Interest:

The defense showed up in a big big way. To shut out one of the most potent offenses in the NFL is a thing of beauty. However there were A TON of drops from both Bruce and Holt. Even Curtis had a big time crucial drop. I'll take the gifts, but you can't count on them.

DeAngelo Williams! Finally Foster had his yearly injury and Fox didn't have him waiting in the wings to waste carries on. Fox is a very loyal man, and for some reason, he keeps going to Foster. For Foster's sake, he was okay today. He had 4 carries for more than 3 yards and 5 carries for 3 or less (and one fumble by Delhomme recovered and ran for 2 yards). His big yardage carries were for 19, 8, 18, and 11 in that order. 3 of those runs were in the same drive. The 19 yarder he fumbled but it went out of bounds. Hardly stellar numbers.

The only time he really ran great was after Williams made some big plays. The same thing when Hoover made a few big plays. He just seems like he needs motivation, and I personally don't want him to come back. When he's there, CARs running game is utter trash. If they could put him in as the backup for like 5-10 carries a game, I'd be ok with that. He's a good change of pace back, and extremely reliable if you need less than 3 yards. :D:clap:

They dominated in home game. Finally.

Points of Concern:

Fumbles? Are you kidding me? There was no less than 5 carolina fumbles in this game. 2 by DeAngleo, and both he managed to pick back up...one by Hoover on the 3. (Hoover is very reliable, and this is odd for him, but Red Zone turnovers are a big :bash:) Delhomme fumbled once and it was recovered by Foster. And Foster fumbled after his 19 yard run, out of bounds. :D NO MORE FUMBLES!

Turnovers in the redzone just cannot be accepted at all, in any case..ever.

We had 3.

One INT by Delhomme after a TD catch (by Smitty) was negated due to a penalty.

One Fumble by Hoover at the 3.

And one INT from Keyshawn Johnson. Which leads me to my next P.O.C.

Playcalling

A trick play on the 26 when you're only up by 13 pts half way through the 4th quarter doesn't make alot of sense. All other times CAR playcalling is very lack luster. Not very creative and quite 1-dimensional. But at times like these, I'd like them to get their minds right.

They tried this same nonsense against MIN with that stupid pass play on the punt return when CAR would've ended up on the 35 or 40 of MIN, only to turn the ball over and lose the game. (and the defense was playing lights out then as well)

This play with Keyshawn, was equally stupid. It seems as though CAR goes for these trick plays not just when no one would be expecting it (which i guess is a good a time to try them) but also when it's just a stupid time to do it.

Don't go for a high risk play. If you must try a sneaky type play, try an end around or some much less risky, and if you miss it, kick the FG, go up by 17 and make it a 3 score game in the 4th quarter. This is elementary.

Last I checked, Keyshawn is not known for his passing abilities ala-LT2. He just doesn't command that type of attention on a run play and well..he's not a damn QB. I doubt when a defender sees Keyshawn get the ball at the line of scrimmage he's thinking "oh my god. I better drop off this here WR and get on that sucker..."

Of course if it works, Fox is a genius, but I still would not be able to sit here and say that it was worth the risk. it just wasn't. a very bad play call. But other than that, the play calling is not very creative, but today they had the doors open to them all over the field because DeAngelo was there to set BofA Stadium ablaze.

The timing looked good and the D-line chewed Bulger up. Overall I'm pretty happy with this win, and they get 5 extra points because it was a home game. But there are still some major issues to work out, and a better team, or at least a team that had their timing down could've ended our season right then and there.

Also, Penalties on the special teams, particularly on punt returns are out of control. Not a punt gets by them without a holding or block in the back call. It's almost laughable. Almost.

edit: Lets not forget also, they only scored 15 pts on a very soft defense, with ample trips to the red zone and many times working with a very short field. Of course those turnovers had a lot to do with that.

edit 2: actually, only 13 pts. the DEF got the other 2.

Actually week 11 was a beaut for the Panthers, both Atlanta and NO lost, giving the Panthers the outright lead in the NFCS since they beat NO earlier this season. The Panthers will once in awhile blow an opponent out, but most the time it's just methodical victories. While the RZ TO's were brutal to watch and were the black flag for the victory-hey, were 6-4 and in first place. My bright spot was the LB corp who played their best game so far this season and it showed on Sunday. The Panthers now have two very winnable road games which looked alot tougher 1 to 2 weeks ago. Also, I beleive, if the G-Men lose tonight, the Cat's are tied for 2nd best record in the NFC??? The #2 seed in the NFC PO's is very attainable for the Panthers, and after a 0-2 start and 4-4 at the bye......I'll take it.

the LB corps did have a good game, finally. I was happy to see that, but alot of passes were dropped by STL and if they could've found their timing, this could've been a real ugly game.

I agree that the dark skies are parting, but i refuse to be homer-esque in this race. If they dont want to be 1 and done in the playoffs, if they even make the playoffs, they need to fix some serious issues, because better teams like NYG and CHI and even NO will capitalize on them and we'll be watching from the couch.

Glancing at the remaining Panthers/Saints schedule it seems (now that McNabb is out for the season) that the Saints look to have the tougher schedule down the stretch. In addition to playing each other both teams have to play Atlanta, Skins, & the Giants. While the Saints get the Cowboys and 49er's and the Panthers get the Eagles and Steelers.

um...i'd take the Cowboys and 9ers anyday over PHI and PIT..regardless of the QB and current record.

Panthers have a winnable game vs the Skins and Atl and NO play-so one is going to lose once again. The Panthers can put themselves in good position these next two weeks, then two games at home before it's time to close out division play. I like their position right now-in first, but still under the radar.

What can you tell us/speculate about the Foster/Williams split going forward? As a Deangelo Williams owner, I was thrilled to see him getting alot of touches and doing seemingly well with it (didn't know about the 2 fumbles), but now I reading today's NFL Team report that Foster should be OK to go next Sunday? Was kinda' hoping Williams would step into the starting role, but now that seems unlikely. Any idea how this might play out?

After Sunday, I'd say it's a two headed monster, and I'd speculate on about 50-50 from here on out, as Fox is back in first place in the NFCS. So, I expect him to try and continue the effort vs StL-especially on the road this week.

knowing Foxy, he'll probably go right back to the 50/50 split with Foster the starter. He's a very loyal dude, and after bringing him back this year, he'll give Foster every chance to prove him right. :D

I was hoping that Foster would be out for another week and DeAngelo would turn some heads and Fox would have no choice but to make DeAngelo the starter and Foster the #5 behind Goings and Hoover and me. :D
