It's pretty simple see, both lines go from left to right. The demand line typically starts high while the supply line is lower, in supply terms this is considered a shortage. As the supply increases the demand will tend to decrease until there is a point where the lines cross (this is where supply meets demand) then supply will continue higher up the Y axis while demand will continue downward.
