Bears player's home searched by police

Gurnee police executed a search warrant Thursday at the home of Chicago Bears defensive tackle Terry "Tank" Johnson in what sources described as an apparent drug raid.

Johnson, a third-year Bear who has had two previous run-ins with the law since joining the NFL team, apparently was not home when Gurnee police executed a search warrant shortly before 11 a.m. in the 400 block of Delany Road in the far north suburb.

Sources familiar with the case said police apparently were seeking drugs.

Charges could be filed later this afternoon as a result of the search, sources said.

Johnson declined to talk with reporters in the Bears locker room midday Thursday and was not seen at practice. Bears officials refused to comment on the incident and Coach Lovie Smith was expected to be asked about the situation later this afternoon.

The Bears already are without one starting defensive tackle because of the ruptured hamstring injury suffered by Tommie Harris that sent him to injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

In a news release, Gurnee police said "some items sought in the warrant were discovered inside the home," but police refused to disclose the nature of the items recovered.

Police did say two adults — a 26-year-old male and a 25-year-old female — were in the Delany Road home along with a toddler and an infant.

Home of Bears' lineman Tank Johnson reportedly raided

December 14, 2006

A search warrant reportedly was executed at the home of Chicago Bears’ defensive lineman Tank Johnson Thursday morning.

The search warrant was executed at a home on the 400 block of North Delaney Road in Gurnee, according to a release from the Gurnee police department.

Entry was made into the home at 10:58 a.m. and the occupants -- a 26-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman and a toddler and an infant -- were secured at 11:04 a.m., the release said.

Officers with the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPSA) assisted in the execution of the warrant. No one was injured in service of the warrant and area

residents were not in any danger, the release said.

Items sought in the warrant were recovered inside the home, the release said. The nature of the warrant and a description of the items was not being released.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s office will review the matter, according to the release.

No charges have been filed in the case, pending review, the release said, though a man was reportedly taken from the home in handcuffs.

Gurnee Police Cmdr. Jay Patrick was not available to comment on whether the home was Johnson’s.

Smith: Police search Tank Johnson's home

By RICK GANO, AP Sports Writer

December 14, 2006

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Chicago Bears' defensive tackle Tank Johnson was charged Thursday with not having a gun owner identification card after six firearms were found at his Gurnee home.

The misdemeanor charge carries a potential penalty of up to a year in jail, said Jeff Pavletic, first assistant state's attorney in Lake County.

Johnson already has a separate conviction on a gun charge.

In November 2005, he was sentenced to 18 months probation and 40 hours community service after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from an arrest in which a nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his sport utility vehicle.

Johnson also was arrested last February after a confrontation outside a Chicago nightclub, but the charges were dropped after the police officer he allegedly scuffled with decided not to continue the prosecution.

Gurnee police had executed a warrant and searched Johnson's home earlier Thursday, Bears coach Lovie Smith said. Johnson, the Bears' starting nose guard, didn't practice Thursday and was driven away from Halas Hall by a Bears security official.

Johnson had turned himself in to Gurnee Police by Thursday evening, said Gurnee Police Administrative Commander Jay J. Patrick.

Unless specifically exempted by statute, all Illinois residents who buy or possess firearms are required by law to have a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card. They are issued by the Illinois State Police.

"It definitely is a concern because Tank has had to deal with some things like this in the past. Yes, it definitely is a concern," Smith said, adding that it was also a distraction for the playoff-bound team.

Losing Johnson would be a major blow to the Bears, who've already clinched a playoff berth by winning the NFC North. Chicago is also without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Tommie Harris, who underwent surgery Tuesday for a torn hamstring.

Johnson was a second-round draft pick of the Bears out of Washington in 2004
