But it's just not happening for him. Even up until this year, I still had high hopes for his career. Maybe a fresh start is what he needs. Article from pro football weekly... David Carr may be entering his final game as a member of the Texans Is David Carr about to play his final game in Houston? Carr was the Texans’ first-ever draft choice, and he has started all but a handful of the franchise’s games. But the team might be readying to move on without him, the way we hear it. Texans head coach Gary Kubiak has said that Carr’s status will be evaluated in the offseason, and a source close to the club suggests that Carr is no better than a 50-50 shot to return for a sixth season in Houston. The 27-year-old quarterback is scheduled to make $5.25 million in salary in 2007 and $6 million in ’08, and he could draw interest from other teams looking to pick up a talented veteran who might just need a change of scenery. Carr has taken a beating throughout his five seasons, a factor that his supporters say must be weighed when evaluating his play. Carr has been sacked 40 times this season, even with Kubiak emphasizing the short-passing game. However, Carr’s fundamentals, such as his pass drops and footwork, have been criticized by Kubiak, who has indicated the veteran too often falls into bad habits, especially when he tries to do too much. Turnovers are also a sore spot for Kubiak, who benched Carr in the Week Eight loss to Tennessee after he committed three turnovers. Moreover, Carr just hasn’t been very productive of late. From Weeks Eight through Week 16, Carr threw only two TD passes. Carr struggled so mightily in a win at Oakland in Week 13 that Kubiak all but abandoned the passing game in the second half. Carr’s popularity in Houston appears to be at an all-time low. It doesn’t help that Houston native Vince Young is starring at quarterback for the Tennessee Titans. If the Texans were criticized nationally for passing on RB Reggie Bush in favor of DE Mario Williams in April’s draft, they really got it locally for passing on Young, who was drafted third overall. Young is beloved in Houston, even by Texans fans, some of whom cheered Young as he scored a game-winning touchdown at Reliant Stadium in Week 14. If the Texans look to replace Carr, expect Broncos QB Jake Plummer’s name to bounce about the rumor mill, given Kubiak’s work with Plummer as Denver’s offensive coordinator. Asked last week whether Carr would be best-suited by a fresh start, Kubiak replied, “I don’t want to go there.” That said, you can be certain Carr’s future with the club will be reviewed in the weeks to come. I think Carr is at for his share of the Texans problems, but shouldn't have to take all of the blame. And solid players like Alex Brown, Randy McMichael, Sheldon Brown, Michael Lewis, Chris Hope, all went much later. Unreal, that's the draft for you. Too bad they didn't decide that last year. They decided to give him an $8 million bonus (I believe) and decided to keep him. rebdog Posted December 26, 2006 Share Posted December 26, 2006 this team needs a veteran QB to rally around to get things going in the right direction. its too much pressure for Carr to handle and his development has been retarded as a result. a veteran like Garcia or Plummer could allow them to put together the other pieces and develop a young QB over a couple years. as much as i've been unimpressed by Carr, i just can't say that he'll never be anything. but that will be the case in he stays in Houston. I wouldn't be surprised to see Plummer there, since some say that Plummer's demise in DEN was partly due to "his" coach no longer being in DEN. Some in DEN make it sound like Kubiak and Plummer had a very strong coach/player relationship. Plummer in HOU for a couple years, grooming the next guy... I can see that. Here's some irony for you... I don't think they thought Young would have the instant success that he has had. They probably didn't want to go through 2-3 more years of "grooming" a number one pick QB. FWIW, the only reason I think Young has become a major issue is because he is in the same division and a hometown guy. Last year, he wasn't even one of the top 2 QBs on most lists. +1 Or at least traded the pick to get more high picks. Couldn't get any takers. I really haven't paid too much attention to them, but if not then how can you blame Carr? From what I have seen in the past, he only has 2-3 seconds before he is sacked. How can he be productive like that? I would love to see Carr on a team with a good o-line to see what he can do with some protection. muck Posted December 27, 2006 Share Posted December 27, 2006 (edited) Trying to get "draft board" value for anything is stupid...unless you believe that whatever it is that you're holding the rights to is truly singular in nature. If you don't want the pick and you can get some other stuff that you do want, do the trade. As we've seen with past drafts, no spot is guaranteed to produce a pro-bowler (or to not produce a pro-bowler). So, if HOU didn't want the 1st pick and couldn't get "full value" for it ... so what. Trade it for another top 10 pick in the draft, plus a 2nd rounder and 4th rounder this year and a 2nd and a 3rd next year ... or whatever ... and take Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler in the middle of the top 10 ... or Mario Williams if the slips ... and pick a bunch of linemen elsewhere with your newly acquired picks. So what if that's only 1/2 the "full value"? It doesn't make sense to me to turn down a trade that helps your team even if you're not getting "full value" for whatever it is that you're trading.
