McBoog
With all the talk of Rivers experience being the major factor for a potential (probable in many minds) loss, I thought this article was interesting. Another "How soon we forget?' scenarios! Tom Brady was in a situation similar to Rivers' in 2001. After sitting on the bench for a year in New England – Rivers backed up Drew Brees for two seasons with the Chargers – Brady replaced the injured Drew Bledsoe in the first month of the season and led the Patriots to an 11-5 record. When the playoffs arrived, Belichick and his staff changed nothing, and Brady responded by leading the team to the first of three Super Bowl wins in four seasons. Norv Turner was offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys in 1992, when Troy Aikman made his first postseason start. Aikman got a taste of the playoffs the previous year as a sub, and in his first start in the '92 playoffs the Cowboys gave no consideration to condensing the playbook. Aikman responded by leading Dallas to the first of three Super Bowl wins in four years. Now I know Rivers has a long way to go to be put in their CURRENT class, but it shows that this is not always the factor everyine makes it out to be. I tend to remember the same type of talk surrounding these two before they won it all. Maybe, hopefully it is Rivers turn! I am much more confident than I was last week despite the fact that this seems to be the game that most are marking as the most likely upset of the four. The bolts have better players, they are at home, Martyball is dead,Belichick had only a week to work his magic and they have to trave cross country. to article
Trots
Rivers is no Trent Dilfer.
Caveman_Nick
The fact is that first year starters have a terrible record in their first playoff games. Brady and Aikman are the annomally. That's not to say that Rivers won't join them, or that he can't. It's just to say that one of the reasons not to like the Chargers this week is the odds on Rivers playing poorly. Todd1
What?? Wasn't Aikman the full time starter in 1990? In 1989 he split some carries with Walsh, but by 90 he was running the full show.
Randall
Most QB's take a while to be good and win games by themselves. Brady and Marino were exceptions. Both were good basically from the start. Aikman had time to be good before his first playoff game. Rivers could join that class, but with BB calling the defense he will be tested. Bonedaddies
I had the number two overall pick this year and was NOT confident that Rivers could perform and LT's numbers would suffer....I took LJ....the guy with the number ONE pick felt the same and took SA.....after it was all said and done, the third pick took LT, AND won the Fantasy Bowl!!!!!! The confidence I have in Rivers has changed just a bit.......
