Below is a fascinating breakdown of the 10/1 CHI - SEA matchup/dismantling, and perhaps a preview of some things to look for in today's game, by Tacoma News Tribune's Mike Sando.

A look at the Bears' offense

Posted by Mike Sando @ 09:08:22 am

The Bears' 37-6 victory over Seattle in October showed us a few things. The Seahawks' biggest problem in that game, upon rewatching the game, was having no chance at blocking Tommie Harris. The pressure Harris brought, almost at will, appeared to be a factor in almost everything that went wrong for Seattle, including Matt Hasselbeck's decision-making on two interceptions. Harris also single-handedly forced Seattle to settle for at least one field goal in the red zone. The score was 20-3 at halftime. The second half was pretty much garbage time. For that reason, I chose to focus on the first half when looking at how the Bears attacked the Seattle defense. I also threw out the final Chicago "drive" of the first half, which amounted to a single running play for five yards as the Bears ran out the clock.

What we found, somewhat surprisingly, was that Seattle's defense was pretty effective, particularly against base run plays. The Bears averaged 2.7 yards per carry on their first 16 running plays. This included a 1.4-yard average on seven runs from regular personnel (2RB,2WR,1TE). The Bears also averaged only 3.1 yards on six pass attempts from regular (0.7 yards per pass play when sacks are included). Chicago was at its worst offensively from regular personnel with Jones alone in the backfield; the Bears passed all three times from this look, producing one sack and 1.5 yards per pass attempt.

Chicago did its best work offensively from Zebra personnel (1RB,3WR,1TE). This included averaging 13.1 yards on 11 first-half pass attempts, and 6.7 yards on three rushes. The Bears had one touchdown and no sacks from this grouping. Their first-half production from Zebra featured: passes of 46 and 22 yards to Bernard Berrian, the first against Kelly Herndon and the second against Marcus Trufant; pass plays of 17 and 14 yards to TE Desmond Clark; a 19-yard pass to WR Gabe Reid; a 15-yard run by Thomas Jones; and a 9-yard TD pass to Muhsin Muhammad.

We should probably expect the Bears to revisit this personnel extensively in this game. I would expect Chicago to be more aggressive than Dallas was last week. For all his struggles, Rex Grossman has a strong arm. He was effective against Seattle from this one-back, three-receiver grouping. He was not effective from base personnel. Logic says the Bears would revisit what worked the first time, particularly with Seattle hurting in the secondary.

Other tidbits from the Bears' first-half offense:

Outside the red zone, they mixed up the personnel on first down. Eight times regular, five times Zebra, one time U (2RB,1WR,2TE).

Second down was the only time they used E personnel (2RB,3WR).

Third down featured a progression based on distance needed. They used U personnel (2RB,1WR,2TE) on their only third-and-1 play. Away from the goal line, they used Zebra personnel for all other third-down plays, with one execption. They went to Eagle personnel (4WR) on third-and-11, the only time they needed longer than eight yards on third down.

The Bears scored their other first-half TD on first-and-goal from the 3 using U personnel (2RB,1WR,2TE). Jones scored on a 3-yard run.

Seattle shut down three consecutive goal-line-area plays from Y personnel (2RB,0WR,3TE). The Bears threw incomplete on two of these. Grant Wistrom blew up the running play for a 1-yard loss on second-and-goal from the 1."
