CaP'N GRuNGe
Maybe the Vikings could make a strong run at Ron Rivera as their new DC to replace Tomlin. The Bears run a similar style cover 2 defense right? Throw some big bucks at him Zygi!

Savage Beatings
Lane Kiffin? I know his name was being thrown out there for the Gophers HC position.
Outshined
Lane Kiffin? I know his name was being thrown out there for the Gophers HC position. I think he is an offensive coordinator. I don't think think there will be a huge drop off because the talent is there. Plus we will be getting Greenway, Erasmus James and Devonte Edwards back. I hope they try and keep the same scheme and not change it drastically...

Yes, he is an OC at USC but remember Daddy Kiffin was a long time Defensive Coordinator in the NFL. I know that doesn't mean that Lane can just jump right in, but someone is definitely going to take a chance on him sometime soon, so this is an opportunity to get him into the fold. Maybe too big of a jump from a college OC to a pro DC though.

Bill Swerski
Why would Rivera want to leave Chicago to coach an inferior defensive unit as a DC again? My feeling is that Rivera stays in CHI until he gets a HC offer.

No reason to make a lateral move even if the money is a little better. Hold out for the bigger bucks that are bound to come with a HC position in the next year or so. Plus, the Vikings aren't going to want to throw a bunch of money at a DC who would probably only last one season anyway.

It's nice to have a stubborn genius for a coach that's always right.
Bill Swerski
$$$$$$$$$ Plus, he may have a better shot at getting the HC job in Minnesota if Childress falters again instead of unseating the popular Lovie Smith. Of course, he'll have less success with Minnesota's defense and it'll decrease his chances of getting a HC gig. I don't really know how authority is delegated at Halas Hall, but the Cover 2 defense that Chicago is running is Lovie's, not Rivera's. He ran the same scheme in St. Louis. I get the impression that the HC/DC relationship in Chicago is a lot more like Belichick/Pees or Dungy/Meeks than Gruden/Kiffin or Ditka/Ryan. In other words, Lovie is the one who is mainly responsible for Chicago's defensive success. Because of that and because of the outstanding defensive talent that the Bears have, it'd probably be in Rivera's best long-term interest to keep his current position and learn from Lovie, while also picking up wins and clout for his defensive success. And THEN go for a HC position if he desires. Edited January 23, 2007 by Bill Swerski
