Jolly Rodgers
Profootballtalk.com reports: POSTED 8:40 p.m. EST, January 22, 2007 RAIDERS TO HIRE KIFFIN Adam Schefter of NFLN reports that the Oakland Raiders will hire USC co-offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to succeed Art Shell as head coach of the team. Kiffin interviewed several days ago for the position of offensive coordinator in a regime that would have featured USC co-offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as head coach. Sarkisian thereafter withdrew his name from consideration. He's no Monte but can't get any worse than Shell I guess.

kpholmes
At this point it can't get any worse, so he just might be the answer... Seems to have a great offensive mind, and is very young. Hopefully the next Gruden. My favorite part of the article however, was that he plans to keep Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator Edited January 23, 2007 by kpholmes
Outshined
As a player, Kiffin was a quarterback for Fresno State from 1994 to 1996. He was a three-sport high school star in Bloomington, Minn. Maybe he can be the back up QB too.
Dr. Rock
What a bizarre situation this ended up being. First off, you get shot down by a college coordinator.. unless he's got some strong info that Carroll's out the door, that's unprecedented. So where do you turn next? To a college QB coach. Unreal. The Vatican Hitsquad
He was Co Offensive Coordinator...for a year... Sighh... I just hope the reigns are given to him, let him build an Offense and make the calls. And ther eis no reason to lose Ryan, the guy built an awesome Defense and should have been seriously considered as succesor to Shell. Can't get worse than last year... can it? justin
Lane Kiffin!? Wow. I figured that it would be at least a few more years until there was a head coach in the NFL younger than I. Edited January 23, 2007 by justin
wildcat2334
Unreal - as bad as some sports teams can sink - Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Hawks, and on, they at least were still pro head coaching gigs, and carried some respek - the Oak job has become a complete joke. Not only has it been proven time and time again that college coaches that make the direct jump, just do not work in the NFL. Now, Al Davis hires a Co- Offensive coordinator from USC, with no NFL experience at all- embarassment to the league- BUT GAWD BLESS HIM - HAVE FUN RAIDER FANS.. kpholmes
BUT GAWD BLESS HIM - HAVE FUN RAIDER FANS.. Well, thats what being a fan is all about. Sticking with the team threw the good times and the bad. Sorry if you don't understand that. Easy to bash the Raider fans when your teams are riding high, but we'll see how you feel when your team hits rock bottom one day, and people kick the sand in your eyes to rub it in. I know where my loyalty lies. And though it might not always be pretty, I'm still here. And you can remember that when the Silver and Black comes back to the glory days. Eventually... Not bashing the Raiders my man, settle. You gotta admit it has become the laughingstock of the league- Shell, his Bed & Breakfast OC- now a 31yr old with no NFL experience- wow, I mean, what is there to even say. Not saying he can't succeed, but long long odds. See Pete Carroll, The Ole Ball Coach, Saban, Riley, Erickson, long list of proven HC - different game in the NFL. The Silver and Black will never be back to glory days til Al is out. all my boys that are Raider fans are effing pissed and embarassed. muck
Who's incharge of the assistant coaches? If it's Al, then there will be a mutiny in the locker room some time before the end of next season. If it's Lane, there is still a good chance that there is a mutiny. And, I wonder how Monte feels about this ... he was never given a shot and his kid gets one before (frankly) he's earned one. ...at least the Raiders are in the AFC West and get to play my Chiefs twice a year... wildcat2334
I think Al's dementia convinced him da Raiders had somehow joined the Pac 10. Maybe they could swap with USC-
muck
Let me guess... Six month contract for $50,000? If he does a good job in the offseason, he gets another six months for another $50,000?

The Silver and Black will never be back to glory days til Al is out. Agree and disagree. This is a weird hire, only the BLINDEST homer would disagree, but Al had a team in the Superbowl 4 years ago... sure he's acting a doo$h now, but he stepped back once and they ruled the AFC West for years. Who knows, maybe he'll get tired of losing... Also, Pete Carrol did pretty good in NY.
Jolly Rodgers
And, I wonder how Monte feels about this ... he was never given a shot and his kid gets one before (frankly) he's earned one. Monte has turned down several head coaching jobs in the NFL. The most recent being the 49ers a couple years ago.

If he does a good job in the offseason, he gets another six months for another $50,000? That would make sense but the Raiders gave him a 5 year deal. How are OAK players going to respect a 31 year old HC with no experience whatsoever?

Cunning Runt
I don't know much at all about the guy, but it's not about age or experience. If he can come in and show that he's up to the task, then what the F difference does it make how old he is or if he's been a head coach before. He grew up around coaching his whole life, so methinks he's probably made for this kind of job.

Offense, though.... outside of a few RBs and WRs, I agree...
