Rivers pulls out of Pro Bowl

I was surprised when ESPN reported that Rivers' reinjured his foot during the Chargers-Patriots playoff game and that he probably wouldn't have been able to play in the AFC Championship game if the Chargers went on. Sounds like the foot injury that Rivers sustained in the last regular season game against the Cardinals was worse than they let on.

The Chargers web-site confirmed today that Rivers will not participate in the Pro Bowl and that he's currently in a hard cast to stabilize his foot:

Geez, hope the injury doesn't linger on. So, does that mean Brady will be going to the Pro Bowl? Many argued that Brady should have gone any way, but he didn't seem to make a big deal out of it indicating he was interested in winning championships, not getting elected to the Pro Bowl.

Gotta defend my Charger. There are many who said he didn't deserve to go, but I disagree. Here are supproting facts:

1) Rivers had the 3rd highest passer rating among starting AFC QBs at 92.0 (oh yeah, the other two, Manning and Palmer were also Pro Bowl QBs);

2) Rivers had the highest passer rating among all QBs in the entire NFL in the 4th Quarter w. a 116.6 rating. Yes, that's crunch time and when it counts the most. This also included two of the biggest comebacks in successive weeks at Cincy and at Denver when they knew he had to throw the ball, and he DID and did it successfully.

3) Rivers led his team to the best regular season record in the NFL, 14-2. And contrary to what some may say, it wasn't all LT all the time although it may have seemed that way. Rivers proficiency in the passing game made defenses at least have to respect the pass.

4) Rivers was 4th in the AFC in passing TDs and 5th iin yards.

5) And Rivers did this with Parker and McCardell being banged up most of the year, losing Floyd (an emrging WR threat) to an ankle injury, and working with a talented, but less than polished WR in Vincent Jackson. Yes, he did have All-World Gates, but Gates saw bracket coverage and double teams the entire year.

Also, the Pro Bowl is supposed to be based on what your team accomplished during the year, not what you've accomplished in your career.

:D Pro Bowl is neither based on team accomplishments or career, it's based on player accomplishments for the year.

Rivers does have the numbers to make it in the 3rd slot to the ProBowl this year, however thats also because your average fan can't understand his numbers are inflated with LT standing behind him every single game.

Manning, Palmer, Brady, Pennington, McNair all have the highest ratings, but none of them have talent anywhere near LT's.

Do not concur. Where did you pull your order on "highest ratings" from. Is this your own special rating system?

The players themselves have a hand in Pro Bowl balloting, so at least they recognized and respected what Rivers brought to the table this year. I'm not saying he was a slam-dunk Pro Bowl selection. The process can be very subjective. I'm just saying that his selection had some credibility. As someone who saw every play of every Charger game this season, Rivers really had a great year and he'll be even better next year. Hopefully, the injured foot will mend well enough so he can prove it. One person on the Chargers message board was speculating he might have the liszfranc (sp?) injury which would be bad news. There was absolutely no credible evidence to support that, so hopefully that speculation was way off base.

No, that was Brady's way of throwing a temper tantrum because he was snubbed. :D

But Brady definitely deserves to go. He did a phenominal job with Mr. Bust and Mr. Googly-Eyes as his WRs.

I never support an injury, but he didn't deserve to go anyways.

:D The coaches and the players have their vote. Without their concurrance, the fan vote mean didly-squat. His peers believed he should go, that is more important than what we think.

Sorry, and oh, don't be so jealous! :D

Isn't that like saying Manning's numbers are inflated because he has Marvin and Reggie to throw to? If anything I would say playing on the same team with LT would be more detrimental then anything to a QB with regards to the Pro Bowl. LT gets the majority of the plays, majority of the touch downs, etc.

I disagree. I think he was definitely derserving.

I think people can clearly make a case for other QBs that might deserve to be there, but obviously Rivers played well enough to earn his spot too. Anyone saying he doesn't deserve to go just wasn't paying attention.

By the way, what kind of foot injury is this that requires a hard cast? Is this something that could linger into next year? :D

Frankly, I'm surprised that LT, Gates, Neal, McNeill, Hardwick, Merriman, Williams, Kaeding, and Osgood didn't also pull out with "mysterious injuries" the second after the Colts beat the Pats. :D

Seems to me LT didn't win his MVP until Rivers took over.

Everyone loves Brees now but Rivers led the Chargers to their best record ever.

LT would not have set the TD record if Rivers didn't keep the chains moving by converting on 3rd down.

:D Remember, LT didn't set the rushing record, just the TD record.

Sprains can take longer to heal and can actually cause more swelling since they involve soft tissue damage as well as connective tissue damage. Immobilizing them helps the soft tissue heal faster. That is why you hear about players in a "boot" for the first part of a week and still end up playing. A boot is a form of "hard cast".

Prudent for him to decide to not play in the Pro Bowl and shows what a team guy Rivers really is. If it was about "him", he would probably go, but for him it is all about "team". Great kid. It should not have any effect on performance next year, unless it is more than what they are saying right now. :D

I am sceptical about the "probably wouldn't have played in the AFC Championship game" thingy :bash: . This may have been released to make Charger fans "feel" better about what happened and create some doubt as to if this was truely "their year".
