Brandon Jacobs' Value Next Year?

Been seeing a lot of rumors that NYG is interested in the likes of Ahman Green and Thomas Jones... Why the lack of confidence in Jacobs? The guy is a tank.

I was under the impression the Giants organization was fully ready to let him take the load next year?

I've got him in a dynasty league and could really use the help.

Whats the buzz?

They're not going to replace Tiki, because you can't replace Tiki. My take on it is that Jacobs is going to get a chance to play a greater role, but that it's too much of a risk to just hand him the job. That's why they'll either get someone who might have some warts (like A.Green) or someone who's talented but unproven (like Michael Turner) and probably use both backs unless one breaks out.

It be nice to know the confidence, or lack thereof, that the Giant organization has in this guy. Either way, it doesn't suprise me that they are looking for another back for at least a change of pace and/or blocking on passing downs.

Take a look around the league...unless your name is Tomlinson, LJ or Alexander (sans injury), not many RBs are getting the ball 25-30 times per game.

I think the day of the single-back offense is going by the wayside. Couple that with the fact that Jacobs has never carried the full load as a pro, and the Giants wanting some insurance is no surprise.

I think they sign a veteran to a short-term contract while Jacobs gets his feet wet in a larger role. Should he prove worthy, 20-25 carries a game would seem appropriate, and he could even become one of the few studs mentioned above.

Drafting a young guy, however, would seem to me to mean that they do indeed lack confidence in Jacobs long-term.

Jacobs will get plenty of work. The Giants have playoff aspirations and they are looking for depth at RB right now. Tiki is a completely different animal than Tiki (obviously), but I think that works in the Giants' favor. It becomes a pick-your-pison type of decision for D coordinators. Do you play light to stop the passing game, especially with a TE like Shockey on the field, and allow a huge load like Jacobs to play pinball with your lighter D players, or do you play strength & mass to stop Jacobs & take your chances with the passing O? Not too many Ds are capable of doing both simultaneously.

In any case, Jacobs is certainly capable of being the featured RB. He averaged 4.4 ypc last year - and a relatively large percentage of his carries were in short yardage/goalline situations. That's pretty solid numbers. When he carried the ball outside the red zone, he averaged 5.22 ypc and when he carried the ball on 1st or 2nd down he averaged 4.69 ypc. Then you add that in 27 carries in the red zone he converted 11 1st downs and 9 TDs, and his conversion rate in the red zone is 74%. That means in evry 4 carries down there, he either scored or kept a drive going on 3 of those carries. That's an outrageous conversion percentage.

Then you add a run/catch ratio of 8.73 and his ypr average of 13.5 and you have a very good lead RB on your hands.

Based upon the numbers above, here's what I'm projecting for Jacobs in 2007:

282 carries for 1376 yds rushing

14 rushing TDs

32 catches for 368 yds

2 receiving TDs

-----------------------------

314 total touches for 1764 total yds & 16 TDs.

That workload is easily obtainable for him - that's 17+ carries per game & 2 catches per game.

Those numbers would make Jacobs a top 5 FF RB and wouls still leave 140+ rushes & 37+ receptions for another RB on the roster.

:D Top-5?

Assuming each of the following are also the primary rushers for their teams, which of Tomlinson, Jackson, LJ, Alexander, Gore, Westbrook, Parker, Mcgahee, Brown, Bush, Maroney and Addai do you take behind Jacobs?

I like the potential of Jacobs, but at this point, thats all it is. Come August, I'll let someone else draft him Top-5, playing behind an aging OL with a QB who obviously lacks the mojo to keep the pressure off the running game.

I didn't say he'd be drafted top 5. I said he'd perform top 5. I expect he'll be a bargain - quite a bargain in leagues where owners aren't very savvy.

Wow... You are way higher on him than I am... Im expecting somwhere around 700 rushing yards... No way does he sniff 1700 yards...

How many carries are you giving him next year? 150? Who else picks up the rest of the 420-440 carries that the 2 primary RBs in NY get?

I agree with you here...if he's on the board as the 13th-17th RB, I'd grab him based on his upside. But if others, like you, project him as Top-5 stat wise, there is little upside in drafting him in one of those spots.

But I would grab the likes of those I mentioned earlier before taking Jacobs, and I might even take Norwood, D. Williams, or Benson too, depending on what there roles appear to be after training camp.

Jacobs will play a much bigger role next year but, the Giants will go after some vet help and see what he can do. I think he'll see the ball somewhere around 200 times rushing/rec. for about 850-900yds. with 12 tds. That's if he can hold onto the ball and get a little lower in his pads. If not, he'll be a vulture back inside the twenty and short yardage as he was this year.

Off topic but . . .

I got to meet Brandon Jacobs last night at Tiki Barber's retirement party last night at Capital in NYC. Shook his hand and his fingers almost touched my elbow. This man is HUGH. He was standing next to his Left Tackle - Luke Petitgot and was clearly bigger than Luke.

Nice guy and says he looking forward to being the "man" next year.

I don't know if his style of running, which is to run over everyone, will last over 16 games. He'll dish out a lot of punishment but will also receive plenty in return.

I don't quite understand his running style being labeled "run over everyone". While the guy certainly doesn't shy from inevitable contact, he has very nimble feet - especially for a guy his size. Is it because he's so big that people insist that he runs with the ball simply by aiming himself at the nearest D player?

No, but you have to admit, his most memorable runs have in fact been where he has totally oblitereated a helpless defender by running right thru him.

That's probably got more to do with why he has the reputation he has.

I'd agree with that. The guy does cause a commotion when he decides that he's run out of open real estate.

To me - he doesn't try to elude defenders or run around them. He runs through them. Reminds me a lot of Earl Campbell.

I just don't know how long he can last during a 16 game season with his running style.
