...out of state?

ANyone use a specific brand of relish, pickle spears, tomota type etc that reminds you of the 'real thing' when/if you make these at home?

For those not in the know: Vienna Beef Hot Dog, on steamed Poppy Seed Bun. Top with mustard, chopped onions, sweet relish, two slices of tomato, a pickle spear garnished with sport peppers. Sprinkle with celery salt.

Thanks! Putting out a spread in a Cali party tomorrow.

Were having some dogs tomorrow, I think I am going to pick up some kraut for sure, maybe some pickle spears and we got chili as well.

I am a pretty basic dog guy, mustard only usually and occasionally with Kraut if available (Home Depot baby :D)

Ever since reading this post I wanted a Chicago Style hot dog so bad. So I did it. I went out to this excellent hot dog stand and got two of 'em. They are exactly as you described, I'm eating them right now, and I also have HUGH smile on my face. :D This is amazing...

Not a Chi style dog, but it's a sort of Canadian-modified version that is very tasty and simple. Dogs, preferably in natural casing, mustard, hand chopped cole slaw made fresh (splash of vinegar, mayo, salt pepper and celery seed to taste) topped with either fresh jalepeno slices or Goya canned chipoltes drizzled with a cheese sauce, anything from Cheeze Whiz to melted jack and cheddar. Half dill pickle on the side and chips. The most imprtant thing is the slaw. I find that no cole slaw comes close to freshly hand sliced cabbage. Put it in the fridge for 2 hours for flavors to blend and slightly tenderize the cabbage. It's the crunch and texture that makes it work.

Wow! I'm surprised at the reaction. In the end, while reading about them, I stumbled across a great tip, in that the hot dog is most enjoyable when the dog is over 170 degrees, and the pickle and tomato are cold. The contrast of the hot and cold was key, and in the end htat was the way to go. I cut my own tomatos and bought everything else ready to go and they were great. You cannot, however, find poppy seed buns in california.
