msaint
I guess Joe Bugel and Rich Kotite turned them down. Then again, we Pats fans can't slam a "re-tread" coach who wasn't overly successful as a head coach getting another gig, as that's exactly what happened with Belichick. Actually, now that I look it up, Wade was more successful as a head coach (45-35 between DEN and BUF, two playoff appearances) than BB, so maybe he'll be OK. If not for the Music City Miracle, his head coaching fate might've been different...
McBoog
after all this time it's Wade All I can say is SH!T! Both Charger coordinators! I am NOT optimistic for the same type of run as last year!

Ziachild007
Phillips is a good coach IMO, but I question whether or not he has a strong enough personality to put up with TO. I also think he is just sort of a stop-gap choice until one of the bigger names becomes available.

I also think he is just sort of a stop-gap choice until one of the bigger names becomes available. That is exactly what I had thought and posted last week...... I'm still not sure about this decision, but hey ! He's got a great surname I feel like I own the team now.
AquaticRay
Actually Wade was picked because he is of the defense side. He will keep his hands off of Garret's offense and Romo's development. Also J Jones and him can get along for a couple of years.
The Wolf
What happened with Norv Turner? Guess the Gore owners can breathe a little easier now.
SLAYER
Phillips is HC in name only. JJ will pull the strings and Wade will dance. How he manages TO will be interesting, will that be his, JJ or Garrett's job. Wade will not touch the O, that will be all Garrett's. now how TO handles taking orders from a youngster, that in his mind, knows less thah he does If Garrett had more experience, he would have been named HC. I'm sure Rivera did not get the job because he wanted more control. Heard earlier on the radio that the reason JJ was not in a hurry was because no one else was talking to Phillips so he was not worried about him going elsewhere. the reason that no one else was talking to him was because he is not a good HC. Menudo
Well, the Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in 10+ years. Wade Phillips has never coached a team to a playoff win. It sounds like a perfect match to me.............
Perchoutofwater
I like the hire. Short of paying another team off to get either Cower or Lovie, this is probably the best possible outcome, based upon the timing of Parcells retirement. Dallas needs help on defense more than anything, and the needed someone who is intimately familiar with the 3-4. Like others, I tend to think this is a stop gap. I think Jerry is going to give Garrett about 3 years of seasoning as a OC and when Phillips' contract expires promote Garrett. I'm really thankful that they did not hire Norv. Garrett knows everything Norv does as an OC and Norv is a horrible HC.
JoJoTheWebToedBoy
Blew my Norv/Garrett theory out of the water. I think the Defense takes a huge step the Offense?????

knoway2xcape
As a 49er fan. I LOVE THE HIRE! Now we can keep Norv and let that offense continue to improve!

If JJ wants to groom Garrett, then I think Dan Reeves would have been the logical choice. Jason Garrett is a Princeton grad. He's supposedly all brains and all charm. And everyone says great things about him. He's the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and he's being groomed by the person he'll need to learn how to work with the most, Jerry Jones. Seahawks21
The only question I really have, is why didn't they just give Garrett the job now?? I understand he may take a bit of grooming, but you have to figure Garrett is going to be a highly sought-after name next offseason. Leaving him as the OC also leaves a chance he could leave for a head job somewhere else. If they really wanted Garrett, they should have hired him as the HC and would have still been able to buy themselves a good defensive coordinator. If they want Garrett to be the guy anyway, lock him down and give him the reigns now. Too risky to keep a guy that good as a coordinator. Garrett has 1 season of official NFL coaching experience as QBs coach for the Dolphins last year. Makes sense to give him an opportunity to run an offense, then give him a chance to run the program.
