'No coddling of Vick'

New offensive coordinator says QB 'excited' about audible freedom

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick may be the team's most recognizable and highly paid player but the new coaching staff, led by head coach Bobby Petrino, could care less.

"There will be no coddling of Michael Vick," offensive coordinator Hue Jackson said in an exclusive interview with the AJC Monday. "We're not going to coddle Michael Vick. This is not a demerit system where we say, 'Okay we're going to deal with this guy this way and this guy that way.' We're going to coach them all hard and he knows that. We have an expectation of him and I think he'll be the first to tell you that I'm not afraid to say anything to him and I'm not afraid to say anything to anyone on this offense.

"There is an expectation and that's what we're going to get. I don't care what the position is. That's the way we see it and that's the way we're going to deal with it."

Vick was not available for comment.

Jackson, hired from Cincinnati, where he was the Bengals' wide receivers coach, said he speaks with Vick every two days and the quarterback is eager to start learning the new offensive system.

Petrino and Jackson said Vick will be allowed to audible at the line of scrimmage and that the quarterback is excited about the change. Vick was not allowed to alter a run play to a pass or a pass to a run under the previous coaching staff, headed by Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.

"He is very excited almost to a point where he's, "Give me all the information now,'" Jackson said. "He's chomping at the bit. Our expectation is our quarterback is the extension of us and he's the guy running the show. He should get it all and he should be able to handle that. We expect our quarterback to do more than anybody on this football team. He should do more. He's going to hit the right calls. He has to hit the right calls."

Vick presents such a different set of skills to the position that there will always be the sense that he could be a great one - if he was used in a manner that made use of all his skills and downplayed or eliminated his weaknesses. But used conventionally as he has the past years, he never rises to the level everyone expects because he is not that sort of QB. I am not completely sold that he is a QB per se, but he has undeniable skills that I suspect are best suited for getting him the ball as much as possible.

If the offense caters to him, it could be dangerous. If they try to make him what he is not, it will flop yet again. Be interesting...

Soooooo, how long before he finds the Falcons down by 27 in the 3rd quarter, loses interest, and changes "a run to the weakside" to "a run out to get weeeed" ... :D

This has always been my view of Vick. Knapp's system never was the right fit nor was his inability or unwillingness to change anything for his players' skill set. Not just Vick but his o-line, WRs, and RBs. What Knapp wanted to do was constantly at odds with what his players could actually do.

Now if they can manage to not lose Zimmer to the Chargers, I'll be a content ATL homer. Until draft day of course when we take Ginn in the first and another VTech corner... :D:D

Translation: Vick is on thin ice and he'd better live up to the hype and produce this coming season - or he'll be playing elsewhere in '08.

Because Vick's play seems to dictate the W-L of the team I wouldn't doubt that. Everything is about Vick and he needs and will step up this year and bring the Falcons back to the playoffs and further. But the problems weren't just on the offensive side of the ball. Injuries plagued the defense all year.

Yes .... we all know how injuries on the defense impact the QB's ability to perform :D

Did I say that. :bash:

I'm not seeing anyone putting any of the blame on Donatel or the defense when they were getting smoked on a regular basis. Grits are we going to start another one? Alright how about the O-Line? Do they impact the QB's ability to perform? :D

You are the one that tied the poor defense to Vick's inability to perform ... you were already making excuses for him.

I'm thinking that any o-line that anchors one of the top running games in the league can't be all bad. And before you say they can't pass block ... I'd venture a guess that it is somewhat difficult to pass block when the QB refuses to exhibit any pocket presence what so ever.

Or maybe it's the whole part of the game where Vick drops back and has to avoid the rush half the time.

What are you talking about? Where did I say that Vick needed to be "coddled"? No :D . Well then it can't be true.

His new OC said there will be "no more coddling of Vick". Why do you suppose he said that? Did he say it because the Atlanta defense sucked? Did he say it because the o-line under performed? Did he say it because Atlanta WRs drop balls.? :D Why would he say it?

My best bet is to emphasize that this offense will be built around Vick and if the offense doesn't flourish it'll be deemed his fault. And do I think it will flourish with the new coaching staff and the anticipation for this offseason. Hell yeah. :D
