:bash: To List of Candidates

Rather than dwell further on what has happened, I am more interested in what might become. :D

After seeing the people interviewing for the job, I am actually relieved that Marty is gone (see link below as well) and would be fine with any of these except for Zimmer (He had trouble with the Dallas D and ran a soft 3-4 when he tried. This does not match the Chargers style).

I am also a little concerned about Rivera. He just didn't seem to get the "how to screw with Manning" thingy in the SB and played him too soft. He would also have to "learn" the 3-4.

My choice from the list would be Rex Ryan and then Turner, assuming a good D-Coordinator (Cottrell?) can be put in place.

And this  should be enough to dispel ANY idea that AJ is going anywhere soon. It is his hire to make, and to live or die with! :D

Any commentary as to your pick and thoughts would be GREAT!

Are you only asking commentary that doesn't Dispel YOUR idea. :D

What is "MY" idea?

I am interested in what y'all have to THINK. You know, honest discussion with meat to back up your opinion.

Any commentary that is able to change my opinion on something is always my favorite. It means I missed something when I was evaluating a situation to even HAVE an opinion!

Nice poll, McBoog. I'm with you regarding Rex Ryan. I didn't know much about him a few weeks ago, but I've heard and read some great things about him this week. And then, as I was watching his press conference yesterday following his interviews, I really liked the way he handled himself and the way he answered questions from the media. It just seems like he has the "it" factor (a respect and love for the game, respect and admmiration from the players he's coached, a quiet confidence, a little moxy, years of coaching expeirence and with success, a tough-nosed defensive minded guy, a family lineage, a sense of humor, energy, and a "fresh" attitude and youth). Here's a good lnk from Baltimore:

I'd like to see Ryan as head coach with perhaps Ted Cottrell or Donnie Henderson as D-coordinator.

My first comment is I really think whoever lands Mike Singletary as there next coach is going to be laughing at all who passed on him.

I think SD will be fine, they have a great TEAM, I dont see them as a one trick Pony, there just young and inexperienced and I think that loss to NE will really help them come next year.

I like the Ryan-Cottrell combo. Singletary impresses me too. He would also be a good HC, IMO.

I wouldn't bag on Rivera too fast. I _suspect_ that Lovie had more to do with the soft D they played against the Colts than Rivera did. I haven't found any write-up, but that style fits Lovie's demeanor more, especially when you look at Rivera's play style as a player. The Bears had a bend style after Harris went down and they pusehd it to the max.

It's just a hunch.

I think Singletary will be the man, but will need strong assistants for whatever O he runs. He'll get the team fired up for sure, he'll just need to ensure execution.

I think they keep AJ until after the draft. I think they are getting all their Rooney rule candidates out of the way, and are trying to sway Pete Carrol away from USC. I think Carrol is trying to wait as long as he can so that he can see how much trouble USC is in over possible NCAA violations before he commits.

My question about Carrol is this. What track record do we have to show that Carrol has the ability to evaluate and draft quality talent the way AJ has? I am not a big fan of all the power in the hands of one person.

I am also interested as to who the "other" candidates are that were voted for and why.

The Chargers do not want to pay big money to a guy that is going to want a lot of power as well. I think they are happy with the way things are and want a guy that will come in and coach what he is provided.

The one guy I see as being overlooked in this whole process is Dan Reeves.

Rex Ryan is still my first choice though. I have seen nothing to change this opinion. :D

Oh... and this just in...

Also Friday, the Los Angeles Daily News reported that Southern California's Pete Carroll isn't interested in the Chargers' job. “I like where I'm at. I'm not going anywhere,” Carroll told the newspaper.

:D to article :D

There seems to be a contradiction in the response to the poll.

Only seven people have stated that it was all Marty that built the squad and the majority feel that AJ is the one that put this thing together.

If that is so, why would the Chargers fire Smith and lose Marty all at the same time? Marty was out the door next year. He did not want to come back, let four of his coaches bail (it is only required to allow coaches to interview for HC jobs), wanted to bring in people that he knew would piss off the front office and made himself a lame duck by not taking the one year extension offer (easily renegotiated IF they won a Championship), sending a bad message to the players and the team. The ONLY reason they kept Marty in the first place was to keep the staff together, and Marty himself knew that and undermined that himself. It was like he was asking to be fired, especially when he tried to bring his brother in as the D coordinator!

I think it is much harder to find people that can find/evaluate players than it is to find people to coach them. Why would you let that ability get away?

I know I am in the minority on this one, but I still am glad the Chargers booted the Schott! It would have been nice if they did it sooner, but all that came into play had to unfold first. My hope is that they hire Ryan. I am concerned about who is going to run the offense. The guy in place as of now is not a known quantity, though he has been spoon fed responsibility over the last few season and has been calling the games during pre-season. :D

Fantasy wise, IF Ryan comes in, look for an even better defense but decreased numbers from the offense. LT is still the number one FF player, but the rest will be a big ? .

Can anyone explain the thought process as to why you think AJ could be fired anytime soon? Yeah, in a season or two should "his" HC pick fail. But mind you, it is his pick. Why let him make it and then boot him along with Marty? :D
