Very interesting trade rumor...

From an article by Bill Williamom, Broncos’ beat writer, this morning in the Sunday Dnver Post (no link up yet):

Heard an interesting scenario the other day: Tatum Bell and Jake Plummer could be joining coach Gary Kubiak in Houston.

The Texans are interested in Plummer. Whether through trade or release, Plummer is likely to end up back with Kubiak. There is talk the Broncos and the Texans will discuss a trade that would send Plummer (Tatum) Bell, and an early-round draft pick to Houston for the No. 8 pick overall pick and perhaps a player.

This scenario makes some sense. The Texans brass likes Bell, and he could help Houston. The Broncos are expected to look for a bigger back, and because they like the potential of Mike Bell, Tatum Bell could be expendable.

Denver will look into moving up in the first round as it did last year to take quarterback Jay Cutler.

The them of Denver’s offseason will be getting impact players through free agency, trades, and the draft. The Broncos likely will consider drafting Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson or California’s Marshawn Lynch in the first round if they have the chance.

Moving up to No. 8 pick likely would be enough for the Broncos to get Peterson, who could be an instant superstar in Denver.

Who knows if the trade idea will have legs, but it could make sense for both teams.

Trade rumors are usually worth the paper they're printed on, but this one may make some sense in solving both team’s problems. HOU needs to add a solid QB & a capable RB, DEN might want to look at a top RB. Kubiak knows Plummer & Bell well, and they know his system. Bell would be reunited with Dayne and create a backfield where they could split touches & both remain effective.

Peterson or Lynch to DEN would be downright scary & boost them immediately into legit contention with all the weapons they'd have on O. DEN also gets rid of two headaches for them who haven’t panned out as expected.

BTW, Williamson is a very credible source regarding Bronco information. He could be floating a balloon for DEN here.

it seems to me that the #8 pick would be worth more than that. i've heard rumblings that denver may even cut tatum. even if that's unlikely, he's certainly proven not to be a #1. and someone like plummer could be signed out of free agency. and for that, they'll give up a shot at peterson or someone similar.

Can we assume that Dom Davis (or whatever he's called this week) is done?

Not necessarily. I am not saying he will come back and be the every down guy again but, I think he can still be a very good role player.

not a freakin' chance. there is no way two bad players get traded for any first round pick, let alone one that high.

Not that this couldn't happen but, I'm guessing its more of wishful thinking on the writers part.

As a Texan fan I hope this doesn't happen. :D

The 8th pick in the draft for a 32 year old backup QB and 1/2 of a RBBC is asinine.

Could be true, especially in other situations, but then again, given the Texans lineup and the nature of this draft, who would the Texans pick at #8 who would clearly help the team more than upgrading both their starting qb and their starting rb? :D

Denver might have found a lamb to fleece ... :D

A free agent QB (who just might be Plummer anyways) and Lynch at 1.08

Plummer + TBell aren't that great of an "upgrade" (if an upgrade at all).

Add in Denver's pick at #21 and it's more realistic. But not enough.

Using the 2006 draft pick value chart:

http://content.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=3&blipid=14689

#8 = 1400

#21 = 800

TBell and Plummer value would have to add to 600 points

Neither of them are worth a 2nd round pick (270 points)

Combined, they may be worth a 2nd round pick.

Wishful thinking on the writer's part.

Not to put forth too much disrespect, but lmao @ people who think a proven 1000 yd rusher & a proven 4000 yd passer at the NFL level are inconsequential pieces of trash compared to a future rookie who hasn't played a down in the NFL yet - especially when the HC of HOU has worked extensively with both guys before.

I'm not a huge fan of either Plummer or T Bell, but right now both guys are a damn sight better than what HOU has at either position currently, and for a team missing a few pieces from being successful (or even .500), a 2-1 trade that also still gets a first day pick for veteran upgrades at 2 O skill positions that can immediately function in the HC's system from day 1 seems to make some sense to me.

This may end up as nothing of consequence - it is a trade rumor, after all - but the level of dismissiveness astounds me.

BB,

IMO, the route this team needs to go is to continue to draft solid players on D. They can go the route of the Jags and the Bears and build favorable teams with a strength on D. They have Ryans, Robinson, and Williams as a core, and shouldn't waste a high draft pick for Plummer and Bell.

I can see your point of view, but Plummer's best days are behind him. The jury's out on how you beat him and the league knows it. TBell is average at best and a high risk to stay on the field for a whole season.

This trade doesn't sound right at all.

Plummer's best days are behind him? He threw for 4000+ yds in '04 and had 18 TD passes vs 7 INTs in '05. His performance fell off the table after Kubiak left - a coincidence, perhaps? And are you telling me that with all his years of experience that it took NFL coaches that long to figure out how to curtail Plummer?

And Bell is still a home-run hitter, as long as his touches are limited. I hate the guy as a featured RB, but I'll admit that he is a superb CoP RB. Keep him at 12-15 touches a game & he's a difference maker.

Damn, I can't believe I'm being drawn into an argument where I have to defend Plummer & T Bell. Talk about your great ironies... Plummer would work as a solid stop gap until Kubiak gets a young hoss up to speed at QB, say 2-4 years from now - especially with an O-line that needs a lot of revamping, while T Bell would be a great counter-punch for whomever shakes out as the #1 RB in HOU, just like he was a great counter-punch for Mike Anderson.

Well done. I still like Marshawn's style of running as a much better fit in DEN than AD's.

That said, if DEN is forced to take AD in exchange for Plummer, T Bell, & a first day pick I guess I could be persuaded to watch next year,,,,

Yes. Plummer's best days are behind him....and those days were not so hot. He had one over the top year. Why a team like Houston would trade a top 10 pick for him and a "home run hitter" who can't stay healthy...you're right, that's just nuts!

OK, I'll concede that...

Good point.
