The 3-4 remains in place and SD did a lot better job with their secondary than DAL did last year. Cowboys to make Stewart def. coordinator Stewart to be named defensive coordinator, sources say 11:47 PM CST on Sunday, February 25, 2007 By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News cwatkins@dallasnews.com The Cowboys are expected to name Brian Stewart as their new defensive coordinator, multiple sources said Sunday night. An announcement could be made as soon as today Stewart, who was unavailable for comment, replaces Mike Zimmer, who left to become the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. Stewart is close to new Cowboys coach Wade Phillips and is familiar with Phillips' aggressive 3-4 defense. Stewart beat out Todd Bowles, who will remain as the Cowboys secondary coach. Stewart and Bowles spoke Sunday night about the Cowboys' defensive personnel. Stewart comes to Dallas from San Diego where he was the secondary coach. From the moment Phillips got to Dallas, he made two attempts to wrestle Stewart away from the Chargers. When the Chargers hired Bill Bradley away from Baylor to coach the secondary, it allowed Stewart to be released from his contract. Phillips and new Chargers coach Norv Turner spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine the last few days trying to work a deal Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was unavaiable for comment Sunday.
