Griffith should find another team without much trouble. This is a big sign of how the scheme is going to be changing though. Sounds like maybe they should have kept Duckett.

Falcons FB Griffith poised for free agency

Negotiations between team, agent stalled

Falcons fullback Justin Griffith appears set to become the team's second veteran starter to venture into free agency according to his agent Michael McCartney.

There has been limited negotiations between the Falcons and the versatile fourth-year running back and both sides seemingly will turn in different directions. McCartney said Tuesday he is not completely ruling out Griffith re-signing with Atlanta but he will test the free-agent market for the best financial and playing situations.

Defensive end Patrick Kerney will join Griffith on the free-agent market, which officially opens just after midnight Friday. Kerney and Griffith are the Falcons' top-two unrestricted free agents. Backup quarterback Matt Schaub and outside linebacker Demorrio Williams are the most noteworthy restricted free agents.

The Falcons have the right to match any offer from another team made to Schaub or Williams whereas Kerney and Griffith can sign with another team.

Kerney voided the final two years of his contract with expectations of garnering a large payday in free agency. Griffith's contract simply expired.

Griffith's strengths as a receiver, ball carrier and open-field lead blocker are somewhat contrary to the beefy, bulldozing-type of fullback/short-yardage runner new coach Bobby Petrino prefers. Griffith was pulled with more frequency in favor of Fred McCrary last season in situations where the Falcons needed more head-on push from their fullback.

Petrino has said that he plans on bringing in a bigger back, either through the draft or free agency, to complement the speedy, smaller tandem of Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood.

Griffith, who started 48 games, gained 378 yards on 81 carries in his career with the Falcons. He scored his first and only rushing touchdown last season, when he averaged a career-high 5.6 yards per carry. Griffith had 87 catches for 621 yards and nine touchdowns in his career.
